Synopsis

Takeda Katsuyori retreated into an unknown cedar forest intending to die. Instead, he cut off his topknot and, to his own shame, admitted that his desire to live outweighed the principles of bushidō. The forest belonged to Shika, a five-hundred-year-old deer god who had watched clans rise and fall. What followed took them from the cedar forests into a world of yokai, supernatural murders, political intrigue and the brutal machinery of Sengoku Japan. Katsuyori had the emotional intelligence of a stubbed toe. Shika had the patience of a rice cracker. It should not have worked. It did. Mostly. He could read a battlefield. She could read the supernatural world. Neither was particularly good at reading each other.
