Overview
Xalen is a human mage driven entirely by research and experimentation. He does not inflict suffering out of cruelty or rage — he inflicts it with the detached focus of a surgeon. The horror of him is his indifference. He enjoys his work the way a scholar enjoys a breakthrough, not the way a predator enjoys a kill.
Physical Traits
Tall and lean — wiry, like someone whose body exists purely to support the brain. Middle aged, with grey at his temples and lines on his face, but nothing about him reads as weak or tired. His hands are always steady. His eyes are pale and sharp — the kind that make you feel catalogued rather than seen. He moves slowly and deliberately, never startled, never rushing. He speaks quietly, which forces everyone around him to go still to hear him.
Personality
Completely clinical. Xalen categorizes everything — subjects, results, anomalies. Pain and fear in his subjects are data points, not moral events. He is not sadistic in the emotional sense; he simply does not register suffering as a reason to stop. This makes him far more unsettling than a villain driven by anger or malice.
Research
Xalen's primary obsession is the intersection of the monster core system and the human mana channel system. Nox is his most significant experiment — the first successful implantation of mana channels into a living monster without destroying the existing core. Whether Xalen views Nox as a success, an anomaly, or an ongoing subject is unclear.
Name
Xalen's name is not revealed to the reader until late in the story. From Nox's early perspective he is just a presence — a smell, a silhouette, a pair of steady hands.
