Sagonism is the religion of Aurastrand and Hyenrock, centred on ten living gods who are believed to safeguard humanity. These gods are in reality exceptionally gifted Sons of Life — men with Kingdom of Life heritage — selected through a rigorous program of military, philosophical, and magical training.
The god program is the training pipeline. Titus enters it, forms his core relationships (Quintan, Suki, instructor Sugroon), and survives the suicide of Sugroon during his training. He completes coronation and is made a fully-fledged god early in Book 1.
His first day in office involves two catastrophic experiences: being asked to sanction a genocide, and being confronted by a confessing old man whose crimes he refuses to punish without proof. Quintan executes the man. Titus walks away from godhood entirely.
Historically, only four women have ever ascended to the Ten Divine Thrones — each was condemned as a heretic by the priesthood and exiled.
