Chapter 20 — How to Make Friends

13 min read•Published Oct 6, 2026

"He must be a genius."

Kai rubbed his chin with a serious expression.

"What do you mean?"

Mylo glanced at him in confusion while Kai continued staring at Chaiden, who was giving his speech.

Noticing the questioning look, Kai turned toward him and spoke in amazement.

"A kid has a professor's title? And even holds an official position in the Imperial Palace. How is that not incredible?"

Mylo made a strange face before turning back to the front.

"First of all... you should focus."

He lowered his voice to a whisper.

"Hm?"

Following Mylo's gaze, Kai looked forward and nearly shouted.

"Eek."

"Shhh."

Kai hurriedly covered his mouth.

The genius professor's gaze felt incredibly sharp, as though he might leap down and grab Kai by the collar at any moment.

Mylo kept looking forward as he whispered quietly enough that only Kai could hear.

"I heard he hates it most when people don't pay attention while he's speaking, and..."

Mylo wore a sympathetic expression.

"...he's probably older than your father."

Kai froze.

"And he also hates it when people talk about how young he looks."

Kai started trembling.

"And he has very sensitive hearing. He's famous for being strict."

Kai grimaced.

He was beginning to suspect the professor really had been staring at him.

After all, he had been talking during the speech.

And even worse...

...he had been talking about the professor's childlike appearance.

Breaking into a cold sweat, Kai immediately sealed his lips shut.

"Haha."

A soft laugh sounded nearby.

But Kai's entire attention remained fixed on Chaiden.

He didn't hear it at all.

Only Mylo and Noel turned toward Yuma.

Unfortunately, Yuma was sitting in front of them.

So neither of them could see what expression he was making.

"Huff, my turn is tomorrow... Noel and Yuma are today, and Kai's is the day after."

Mylo rubbed his still-red cheek as he announced their examination schedule.

After the speech and welcoming ceremony ended, the students were informed that only those scheduled to take the examination that day were allowed to remain in the hall.

Noel gave a small nod before looking at Mylo.

"Stay in the dorm quietly and don't wander around. Don't cause trouble, and don't follow anyone."

"Come on, I'm not a child."

Mylo grumbled but obediently nodded anyway.

Then Noel turned toward Kai.

"Kai."

"..."

"Kai."

"..."

"Kaiser."

"Yes, sir!"

Noel raised an eyebrow.

Kai was looking around with obvious vigilance.

After making sure only the four of them were nearby, he dramatically clutched his chest.

"Good grief, you scared me. What if I died of a heart attack?"

"Lower your voice. And since both of you will be staying in the dormitory, please don't do anything inappropriate or set a bad example."

"When have I ever done anything inappropriate?"

Kai looked at Noel innocently and lifted his chin.

"I've always been a good kid."

Noel stared at him flatly.

Then suddenly smiled.

With the exact same expressionless face.

"Right. A good kid who had a Professor glaring at him for nearly two hours."

"Ugh."

Kai immediately rubbed both arms as if he still had goosebumps.

"Please stop talking about that. I never expected him to be that vindictive. How can someone stare at another person for almost two hours? I can still feel his gaze even now. Ugh."

As if that still wasn't enough, Kai rubbed at his neck.

"Is he going to teach classes? Is he going to memorize my face? Seriously, I'm terrified of meeting him again."

As though merely imagining it was frightening enough, Kai dropped into a crouch and started tugging at his own hair.

Yuma simply watched him with a faint smile.

The kind of smile someone might wear while watching a small child.

"But..."

Yuma tilted his head slightly.

"What kind of inappropriate things?"

Kai froze.

Noel looked away.

Mylo opened his mouth but had no idea what to say.

"Hm?"

Silence.

For some reason, none of them could bring themselves to explain the idiotic incident that had happened in the dorm room that morning to someone who looked so innocent.

"I-it's—"

Surprised to hear Kai actually stammering, Mylo immediately blurted out:

"Children shouldn't know!"

Seeing Yuma blink in surprise at the sudden outburst, Mylo quickly cleared his throat.

"These are just unimportant things adults do. Children don't need to know."

"I'm not a child."

Mylo immediately planted both hands on his hips.

"Yuma is a year younger than me, so Yuma is still a child."

"Wait—seriously?"

Startled by that information, Kai immediately jumped to his feet and walked over to Yuma.

He circled him thoughtfully, one hand on his chin.

"Yuma is only sixteen? Most academy students are eighteen on average. Aren't you a little too young to be here?"

Seeing that Yuma only smiled, Kai grabbed both of his shoulders with a serious expression.

"Enrollment only opens once every two years. It makes some sense for Mylo to apply this year. If he waited for the next round, he'd be one of the older students and probably feel awkward."

Kai frowned.

"But doesn't that suit you even more?"

"..."

"Tell your big brother here. Who made you come to school? Hm?"

"..."

"Maybe you don't know this, but after graduation we're required to serve in the military for two years."

Kai shook his head.

"Wouldn't it be better to delay it? You're not being forced to attend, right? If you are, just roll around on the floor and throw a tantrum. I'm sure your father will back down."

Yuma chuckled softly again.

"No one forced me. This is something I need to do."

Kai frowned.

"Need...?"

To him, that sounded completely unreasonable.

"How can anyone willingly attend an academy? I'd postpone it again if I could. Just thinking about military service already makes me tired."

Noel looked at Kai as though he were pitiful.

"For some people, serving in the military is something to be proud of."

"Not me. I just want to sit around, eat, sleep, and be lazy."

"We need to learn how to use our powers efficiently. You know how dangerous contamination can be if we don't learn properly."

"Ugh... You sound just like my father and mother. And that only makes me want to argue."

Noel closed his mouth.

He had just remembered that talking to Kai would only exhaust him.

Because of that, he shifted his gaze toward the hands still resting on Yuma's shoulders.

"If you're done talking, take your hands off him."

"Yeah, Kai."

Mylo glanced around as well.

"You look like you're bullying Yuma. So you should let go."

"Bullying?"

Kai followed Mylo's gaze.

Only then did he notice several people watching him warily.

As if the moment he dared to hit Yuma, they would all rush over and gang up on him.

Kai slowly lowered his hands.

"Are you really not a Purifier, Yuma...?"

Yuma gently shook his head.

Kai reluctantly nodded.

But he still had his doubts.

How could someone who wasn't a Purifier draw out other people's goodwill so easily?

It was hard to believe.

And yet the proof was standing right in front of him.

"But, Mylo."

"Yeah?"

Kai lightly slapped his own cheeks as he stepped away from Yuma.

"What happened to your face? Your cheeks are really red."

As if suddenly reminded of something tragic, Mylo immediately let out a sigh.

"I tried slipping through the crowd of girls when the schedule was posted."

"..."

"I thought it would be safer than squeezing through a bunch of muscular guys."

Kai nodded.

That made sense.

"And then?"

"One girl shoved my cheek and pushed me to the right. Then another girl shoved me from behind the same way. And when I finally made it to the back... someone stepped on my foot."

Mylo let out a long sigh.

"Haaaaa... I feel like I'm going to get beaten black and blue."

Kai immediately patted his shoulder with deep sympathy.

"Women are terrifying."

Mylo nodded seriously.

"As the younger brother of four older sisters, I strongly recommend running away when women start gathering in groups."

Mylo nodded even more seriously.

"I'll remember that."

Ignoring the two of them, Noel noticed several teachers beginning to appear and directing students who weren't scheduled today toward the exits.

"You two should go."

He pointed toward the central doors with his chin.

"Noel is kicking us out. Hmph. Come on, Mylo. Let's go have fun by ourselves. We'll leave the mean one behind."

Kai immediately threw an arm around Mylo's shoulders and started walking toward the exit.

Noel felt a headache coming on just watching Kai do whatever he pleased.

But he couldn't keep an eye on them much longer anyway. His own examination would begin soon.

"I'll say this one more time. Don't do anything inappropriate, and don't teach each other weird things."

"Yeah, yeah. Mom doesn't need to worry. I'll take good care of my little brother."

Kai casually waved a hand before continuing toward the door with Mylo.

"Now come on! Let's explore and spy on the cafeteria! The cafeteria is the first thing you should check when visiting a new place."

"I agree! Let's go!"

Noel gritted his teeth.

He kept reminding himself that arguing with Kai would only make him even more exhausted.

"Haha."

Noel turned toward Yuma.

Yuma was looking at him with a soft smile.

"We should get going too."

Noel gave a quiet nod and followed Yuma.

That smile felt strange.

But when Yuma returned to his usual faint smile, Noel wasn't sure if he had imagined it.

That smile just now...

It had looked almost pasted on.

Noel shook his head to clear his thoughts.

Maybe he was simply overthinking things.

Quickening his pace, he walked beside Yuma.

Their destination was directly beneath the auditorium stage, where a man sat behind a temporary desk piled high with papers.

"Names."

"Yuma Soren Cody."

"Noel Riggs Kaysen."

The man looked familiar.

He was the senior who had checked their registration documents when they first arrived at the academy.

After marking off both of their names, he pointed toward the teacher standing by the door on the left.

"Noel, you can head through that door. Someone there will guide you to the training grounds where you'll demonstrate your abilities."

Seeing Noel nod, the attendant turned toward Yuma.

"Yuma, go right. Since you're a Guardian, just report directly to the senior on duty. No need to wait in line. Just tell them your name."

He shrugged.

"There are only three Guardians this year. And each one is tested separately."

"..."

"Sounds like it'll take a while. I don't really know how Guardian examinations work, but good luck~~"

Yuma lowered his head in greeting before heading toward the door on the right.

"Wow, that kid is really polite. People from the gentle-type groups are always pleasant."

A voice called out behind him.

"Stop putting yourself down. You're a hard-type too, you sword-obsessed maniac."

Another voice immediately answered.

"What— no. How are you only showing up now? Look at this mountain of paperwork and all these people! Grab another desk and start helping!"

"Ugh. It's only been ten minutes. I was in the restroom."

"Ten minutes is a long time. Hurry up. Next!"

Yuma listened to the commotion quietly.

His steps remained steady and measured.

As though his body had already memorized the most efficient way to move.

"Yuma."

Yuma turned and stopped walking.

He looked at Noel.

His face was still calm, wearing the same faint smile as always.

"Hm?"

"I don't know if it's rude to say this, but..."

Noel let out a quiet breath, as if he had finally made up his mind.

"Be careful and don't get hurt."

"..."

"If anything becomes difficult, tell a teacher or a senior immediately. If you feel unwell or exhausted, stop the test and only do what you can."

Noel paused briefly.

"And—"

Watching Noel continue speaking, Yuma felt something strange.

There was...

something unfamiliar in the boy's gaze.

Different emotions were tangled together there, woven so tightly that they were difficult to separate.

He didn't truly understand what most of them meant.

But he knew they weren't bad emotions.

If he had to name one emotion he recognized among them all...

...it was obsession.

Obsession was the emotional corruption he had seen most often among the Death Gods and Shadows.

Obsession with family.

Obsession with power.

Obsession with a person.

At its core, obsession was a dark, clingy emotion.

Yet what he saw in Noel felt different.

That obsession was only a small part of everything mixed together.

And among all the emotions he could see, it felt closer to fear than anything else.

But...

Fear of what?

Then Yuma remembered what Diana had said about Noel being a fan.

Could this be the kind of fear and worry someone felt for the safety of a person they admired...?

None of the emotions in Noel's gaze carried any ill intent.

That was why Yuma couldn't bring himself to ask.

"Yuma? Were you listening?"

Yuma came back to himself.

Now all that stood before him was Noel, whose gaze had already returned to normal.

The confusing emotions he had seen moments ago had disappeared.

Seeing Yuma nod calmly, Noel could only smile helplessly.

He knew Yuma hadn't actually been listening.

"Just remember this."

"..."

"Be careful and don't push yourself too hard."

"..."

"And since you don't like the heat, try to stay in the shade instead of standing under the sun."

"Okay."

Yuma smiled softly as Noel left him alone.

Watching Noel disappear through the doorway, Yuma resumed walking.

Then—

he stopped.

Confusion filled his face.

"...Have I ever said that I dislike the heat...?"

But since Rue had been the one to introduce Noel to him, perhaps Rue had mentioned it beforehand just in case.

Yuma closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

And continued toward the teacher standing by the door on the right.

"Good afternoon."

The teacher opened the door and returned the greeting with a smile.

Remembering the earlier instructions, Yuma headed toward the nearest attendant.

But before he could say anything—

a book slipped from his pocket.

Plop.

Srrrk.

The breeze flipped several pages open.

.

.

.

If your friends make jokes or do something silly, just smile and laugh a little. They'll like it.

If your friends do something embarrassing or unfortunate without actually being upset about it, laugh along. Sometimes they'll tease you back.

If your friends tell a joke, don't forget to laugh even if it isn't funny.

If something is funny—or so ridiculous that it's funny—laugh then too! But only a little. Don't laugh too hard, or people might think you're crazy! Hahahaha.

Anyway, smile often and laugh a lot, and you'll have plenty of friends!!!

.

.

.

Yuma closed the book and slipped it back into his pocket.

He really should thank Lavis.

There truly were situations where he had no idea how he was supposed to react.

But thanks to that book, he had been able to get through them without looking strange.

Yuma resumed walking toward the attendant and closed his eyes tiredly.

Perhaps...

...this mission would be difficult for him.
