Chapter 21 — How to Be Normal

"Healers over here."

"Purifiers? Line up here."

Yuma quietly watched the staff direct the incoming students.

The candidates were split into two long lines leading toward the training area.

Yuma lowered his head slightly.

Hot...

His eyes stung.

Still, he obediently followed the instructions and waited.

The sun was growing harsher, and some of the candidates had already begun to complain.

Yuma, however, maintained his straight posture with a calm expression.

"Sorry, sorry."

A staff member approached him with an awkward smile.

"I didn't expect this to take so long. Hot, isn't it?"

Yuma shook his head and offered a faint smile.

"The seniors must be more tired."

The staff member chuckled before opening his hand.

"Mint candy. It's refreshing when it's hot."

Yuma calmly looked at the candy before accepting it.

"Thank you."

The staff member immediately unwrapped one for himself and popped it into his mouth.

Seeing that, Yuma unwrapped his own and cautiously tasted it.

His lips pursed slightly.

But he said nothing.

"Allen!"

"Anna?"

"The teachers said all the students are inside."

"Then lock the doors. And let the instructors know."

The girl named Anna flashed an exaggerated OK sign before hopping toward the auditorium entrance Yuma had passed through earlier.

"Follow me."

The staff member, Allen, led Yuma toward another door connected to the training facilities.

The room contained a large transparent window overlooking the outdoor training grounds.

"This room is usually used by teachers to observe students during practice."

Allen pointed toward the crowd gathered outside.

The area directly in front of the glass had intentionally been left empty.

"Your examination is simple. Try shielding the candidates who are facing Shadows."

He then pointed toward a staff member demonstrating on a raised platform.

The man held a sword while confronting a Shadow released by one of the instructors.

"Don't worry about them breaking through the glass. Protective barriers separate the platforms. Those barriers are powered by the soul energy of the Imperial Army's Guardians."

"Allen."

"Condo. Good timing. Can you help me lower the wall?"

"Sure."

The staff member who had just entered quickly operated several switches along the wall opposite the large window.

Grrrrrr...

The wall trembled before slowly sinking into the ground.

The training area beyond was revealed.

It was where the Healer and Purifier examinations were taking place.

Several healer candidates were channeling their soul power into the instructors overseeing the examination.

Meanwhile, another instructor was demonstrating while pointing at the forehead and the heart—the places where contamination most commonly gathered.

Noticing where Yuma was looking, Allen raised an eyebrow.

"The Purifiers' examination is to purify candidates who have already completed the sword, bow, healer, or guardian examinations."

Yuma turned toward him as Allen continued.

"Though if they don't want to, they can simply receive purification or calming treatment directly from the instructors. We even offer long-range purification if necessary."

Allen shrugged.

"After all, how much soul power can a student use during an entrance examination? It's nowhere near enough to create serious contamination. Long-range purification is more than enough."

After confirming the wall had fully lowered, Condo walked over.

"The strength of purification doesn't depend on physical contact. It depends on the Purifier's soul power, just like every other ability type. The stronger the soul, the stronger the ability."

Seeing Condo approach, Allen grinned mischievously.

"That's right. So, junior, let's see how many students you can protect with your shield."

Yuma chuckled softly.

"I'll try to hold out as long as I can."

"Don't scare him, Allen."

Condo shot him a disapproving look before turning to Yuma.

"This examination is only meant to measure your shield control and your overall capacity. As long as you can maintain a shield around even one person, that's already enough to pass."

"..."

"So don't hesitate to stop if you get tired. Understood?"

"Yes, Senior."

Allen clapped his hands before throwing an arm around Condo's shoulders.

"There's still fifteen minutes until the demonstration ends. The examiner assigned to you hasn't arrived yet, so relax for now."

"Understood."

Allen and Condo walked past him.

"Take a seat if you'd like. Good luck."

"Thank you for your encouragement."

Allen glanced back over his shoulder.

"So obedient."

Condo also looked back toward Yuma, who was growing more distant behind them.

" for a Guardian, his aura feels more like a Purifier's."

"Maybe his soul power is just exceptionally strong."

"Stronger than that so-called genius Guardian everyone's been talking about?"

Condo snorted.

"No one's confirmed whether that story is even true. Holding a shield against a swarm of Shadows sounds fake the moment you hear it."

"He might really be that strong."

"Maybe. But don't forget that Shadows have ranks too. The Empire's standards are unusually high."

Condo shrugged.

"What would be considered extraordinary elsewhere often becomes ordinary here."

"Hahaha. Fair point."

Condo suddenly fell silent.

He glanced back toward the room, now little more than a distant spot behind them.

"That child's aura..."

"Like a young child's?"

Condo's eyes widened.

"Yes."

Allen, who had just taken a seat nearby, turned back toward the room as well.

Up to a certain age, a child's soul remained transparent and easy for soul users to perceive.

That was because a child's soul was still pure and untouched.

Which made it strange for a teenager to possess a soul with the same kind of purity.

"This is... incredibly comfortable."

"...I agree."

The two fell silent for a moment.

Neither of them knew how to explain the feeling.

But being near Yuma was strangely comforting.

And it made them want to stay near him a little longer.

Lucien opened the door and looked at Yuma, who was sitting quietly by the window.

There was something quiet about the child.

Strangely, it felt out of place amidst the academy's current bustle.

As though he were isolating himself from everything around him.

Knock. Knock.

Hearing the soft knock, Yuma shifted his gaze from the window toward him.

"Have you eaten yet?"

Lucien walked over.

His eyes briefly flicked toward the wall that had sunk into the ground before returning to Yuma, who quietly shook his head.

His brow immediately furrowed.

He placed the package he was carrying on the table.

"Eat first. Tests for the gentle soul types are different from those for the combat types. It's fine to relax a little."

"Mm."

Lucien watched as Yuma simply stared at the package.

Eventually, he let out a sigh.

Opening the sandwich, Lucien placed it into Yuma's hand.

"Eat."

Yet Yuma only continued looking at the sandwich in silence.

"What is it?"

"..."

"Does this feel unfamiliar to you?"

"It's fine."

Lucien studied that gentle smile for a few moments.

Then he crouched down in front of Yuma.

"Does it feel strange?"

He took the sandwich back.

"Ahh. Open your mouth."

Yuma's pupils trembled.

Wearing a confused expression, he slowly opened his mouth.

Lucien watched him chew.

Then he took a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiped the corner of Yuma's mouth.

"Maybe the academy is much noisier than the quiet palace."

"..."

"And maybe the students here do things you've never seen before."

Lucien spoke calmly.

"But, Yuma."

"..."

"You should know that all of that is normal for someone your age."

"...normal?"

Yuma's voice was extremely soft.

Almost too quiet to hear.

As if uncertain.

As if hesitant.

As if the word itself felt unfamiliar to him.

Yet Lucien felt that was only natural.

A prince who had grown up inside the palace under constant protection.

A child who had later entered the battlefield and become a commander.

Remembering how much Richard wanted Yuma to experience a life appropriate for his age, Lucien spoke again.

"Isn't this mission supposed to be a disguise?"

"..."

"Then try adapting so you won't stand out."

Yuma fell silent once more.

Lucien was about to offer him another bite when that same soft, confused voice spoke again.

"But what if I don't know how?"

"Hm?"

Yuma lifted his head.

His pupils trembled slightly.

"I don't understand how."

"..."

"I was never taught."

Lucien's breath caught.

There was something fragile there.

It felt as though he had just forced a child to show him a wound.

As though he had pushed a child who had been holding back tears to finally cry.

Lucien didn't know why such thoughts suddenly appeared.

Yet his chest ached.

"Then start by accepting everything around you."

"..."

"Don't force yourself to do something when you don't know how."

Lucien forced a small smile and patted Yuma's head.

"Yuma."

"..."

"Your friends will know how to pull you back when you fall behind."

"..."

"So just follow them."

"..."

"I'm sure it'll be a good experience for you."

Lucien stood back up.

"Everyone is on your side."

"..."

"So be happy."

Even Lucien didn't understand why he was saying things he normally never would.

He wasn't the type to interfere in other people's lives.

Nor was he someone particularly concerned with others.

Yet he couldn't bring himself to leave Yuma alone.

Besides, Yuma's confusion felt understandable to him.

After all, the academy and the Imperial Palace were completely different worlds.

Still, he was certain Yuma would eventually adapt.

Even if he remained silent, people would pull him into their circles.

Because people liked him.

Because—

Lucien blinked.

Confusion filled his face.

"...He should be smiling more brightly."

"Hm?"

Lucien shook his head.

He didn't know where that thought had come from.

Placing the sandwich back into Yuma's hand, he stepped away.

"Finish it. I should go."

"Mm."

Lucien patted Yuma's head once more before leaving the room and heading toward the outdoor training grounds.

Halfway there, however, he glanced back.

Yuma was still sitting where he had been.

Eating quietly.

Lucien's expression softened slightly.

"He really does look better with a bright smile."

He pressed a hand against his head.

A brief pain flickered through his head.

Maybe it was the heat.

The afternoon felt far hotter than usual.

After letting out a quiet sigh, he continued walking.

Yuma ate the sandwich while watching the outdoor training grounds.

"Accept... and adapt."

The words slipped out in a soft murmur.

Yet Yuma could only close his eyes tiredly.

He didn't understand.

The only thing he truly understood was that he had to keep living.

No matter how difficult it became, he couldn't stop.

Because it was a promise.
