Chapter 27 — The Lifeless Smile

11 min read•Published Sep 27, 2026

"Uuh... Yuma's not here yet...?"

Mylo scratched his head as he peeked toward Building A.

"Maybe we're just here too early. Besides, Yuma used his power from morning until noon yesterday, didn't he? He's probably exhausted."

Kai leaned back against the bench, tilting his head up with a bored expression.

"Hmm... Noel isn't here yet either..."

"He said he was going to buy breakfast."

"Oh, right. We haven't eaten yet either."

"I asked him if he wanted to come with us, but he said the cafeteria would definitely be packed if we all showed up together."

"I guess he's right. Even yesterday at lunch... wasn't it incredibly crowded?"

"Ugh... It was hard just to walk through."

"But the food was good..."

"Yeah..."

The two of them fell silent, as though recalling yesterday's meal.

"Ah, there's Yuma! Over here!"

Kai immediately turned toward where Mylo was pointing.

Yuma stepped out of the corridor with a small smile on his face.

One hand was resting against his chest.

"Good grief... first thing in the morning and I'm already getting an eyeful of beauty. It's practically cleansing my soul."

As if he had heard Kai's mutter, Yuma let out a quiet chuckle as he walked toward them.

But the smiles on Kai's and Mylo's faces vanished the moment Yuma stopped in front of a girl.

"That uniform... she's a senior, isn't she?"

"Let's go."

Without another thought, the two hurried over to Yuma.

They couldn't let their youngest be bothered.

"Here, hold this!"

"…?"

Yuma stared blankly at the large stuffed doll being thrust toward him.

The girl in the staff uniform looked at him with sparkling eyes.

...She reminded him of Bonnie.

The same type of person who would suddenly shove something into Yuma's hands, make him pose with it, then excitedly proclaim she could die happy.

"This—"

"Just hold it first, kid! It'll suit you perfectly! Come on! Hug the plushie, tilt your head a little! Just a second! Just one secooond!"

Yuma took a step back, his expression remaining as blank as ever.

The girl immediately stepped forward as well.

As though she had no intention of giving up until Yuma accepted the oversized plush.

"Come o— Ack."

"What are you doing here?"

"Cedric? Ah, no, wait! Let go! I finally found my muse!"

"They've been looking for you. You're being called."

"Just one more secooond!"

The young man named Cedric looked at the girl coldly as he grabbed the back of her collar.

"Hey! Fine, fine! I get it! So stop looking at me like that!"

The moment he let go, Cedric immediately lowered his head toward Yuma.

"My apologies for this girl's behavior, Junior."

"Behavior? Behavior, you say?! Do you have any idea how important it is for an artist to find their muse?!"

Her voice immediately shrank the instant Cedric's cold gaze landed on her again.

Once he was sure she had finally fallen silent, Cedric turned his attention back to the prospective student before him.

Then...

He froze.

His expression slowly darkened.

And suddenly, he reached out—

"Hey, Senior!"

"Yuma! There you are! We've been waiting for you!"

Mylo immediately stepped between Cedric and Yuma with a broad grin.

At the same time, Kai casually draped an arm over Yuma's shoulders from behind and pulled him a step back.

"Kai...?"

"Why were you spacing out? If a stranger gets too close, step back."

Hearing Kai's annoyed whisper, Yuma came to his senses and offered a small smile.

"Don't smile."

"Mn.

Let go."

Kai let out a quiet snort as he pinched Yuma's cheek.

Yuma lightly slapped away the hand still tugging at his cheek before shifting his gaze to Mylo.

"Right? You're Senior Cedric Mil Ignatius, aren't you? I'm a huge fan! Your twin-sword technique is incredible, Senior!"

Mylo's hands clenched into fists.

Yet Cedric continued staring at Yuma as though he hadn't heard a single word.

His fists tightened even more.

"Whoa..."

Kai glanced sideways.

He knew that look. If they hadn't been standing in the middle of a crowd, Mylo would've already swung at Cedric.

"You're still alive?"

The voice, filled with anger, came without warning.

"Then why haven't you come home?"

"W-Wait, Cedric—"

"Huh—"

Both the girl and Mylo tried to stop him.

But Cedric gritted his teeth and continued toward Yuma, reaching out.

"Do you have any idea how dangerous the outside world is? Do you know how desperately we've searched for you everywhere—"

"What are you doing?"

Cedric stopped in his tracks.

He looked at the person who had suddenly stepped in front of him.

"Lucien."

"Lily, everyone's been looking for you. The examination is about to begin. Go join them."

"Move aside, Lucien."

Lucien shifted his gaze toward Cedric, who was still staring sharply at Yuma.

"He isn't your brother."

"What?"

"I know him."

Lucien's voice remained calm.

"And I know that Yuma has never left the Empire."

"..."

"You should know better than anyone that some people simply resemble each other. This isn't the first time you've mistaken someone else for him."

Cedric fell silent.

His gaze returned to Yuma.

Only now did he truly study him.

The face was undeniably similar.

But his hair and eye color were completely different from his younger brother's.

Slowly, Cedric lowered his hand and took a step back.

His eyes briefly shifted toward the red-haired boy standing beside Lucien.

They were filled with hostility.

Yet after only a glance, Cedric looked back at Lucien.

Their gazes met once more.

The same cold expression.

"Whoa, that's freezing!"

Lily's cry immediately broke the tension.

She grabbed Cedric by the arm before flashing Yuma a playful wink.

"If we meet again, come with me, cutie."

"Let go."

"Quiet! Why do you always glare at Lucien like that every time you see him? He hasn't even done anything to you."

"I just hate him."

"Aaagh! Thanks to you, I didn't even get to introduce myself to my muse!"

All they could do was watch as Lily dragged Cedric away.

A large plush doll was tucked under one arm, while her other hand firmly pulled the tall black-haired, golden-eyed young man along behind her.

"Haaa... That was terrifying. I honestly thought they were about to start fighting."

Mylo let out a relieved sigh as he pressed a hand against his chest.

"Then you shouldn't have stepped in front of him."

Noel's voice came from beside them.

He looked at Mylo with his usual expressionless face.

"What else was I supposed to do? First that senior girl walked up to Yuma. Then before we even got there, that scary-looking senior reached out toward him. Of course we panicked!"

"Besides, this place is crowded. We never expected him to keep approaching Yuma even after we stepped in."

Kai spoke up in Mylo's defense as he casually patted Yuma on the head.

Before his hand could land, Lucien caught his wrist with a slight frown.

"Don't pat his head so casually."

"Oh."

Kai scratched the back of his head with a grin.

"Thanks, Senior. You really helped back there. Your glare was every bit as cold as his. I could've sworn I heard a snowstorm."

Lucien let out a quiet sigh at Kai's remark before shifting his gaze to Mylo.

"You're taking the examination today, aren't you?"

"Eh? Yeah!"

"Don't be late."

"Yes, Senior!"

"Yuma."

Yuma raised his head.

His face looked pale.

Lucien placed a hand against Yuma's forehead and frowned.

"You're cold. Are you sick?"

"My body temperature is naturally lower."

"Even so, you should get some rest. Yesterday your examination schedule ran too long. You should've gone straight back instead of staying until nearly noon."

"I'm fine."

Seeing Yuma's gentle smile, Lucien recalled Richard's request from that morning.

He took a chocolate bar from his pocket.

"…?"

"Stay away from Cedric. He lost his younger brother seven years ago and has been searching for him ever since. But he's... somewhat obsessive. If he realizes someone isn't the person he thought they were, he can sometimes become rough and hurt people who resemble him."

"Seven years ago, Senior?"

Lucien glanced at Mylo before nodding as he unwrapped the chocolate.

"The Great War seven years ago claimed countless lives. Even more people lost their families—whether they disappeared or for other reasons. Cedric was one of them. But according to him, his younger brother abandoned him."

"Eh..."

Mylo's eyes widened.

Kai and Noel also turned their full attention to Lucien's explanation.

Only Yuma grew paler with every word.

"I don't know the details. From what I've heard, his younger brother left him to protect him. That's why he's still desperately searching for him. He's convinced his brother is still alive somewhere out there."

Lucien slipped the wrapper into his pocket before lowering his gaze.

He was about to feed Yuma the chocolate when he noticed the cold sweat forming across Yuma's face.

"Yuma? Are you sick?"

"Good grief, Yuma. You look really pale."

"This is bad, isn't it?"

"…Excuse me."

Mylo and Kai were both startled by how pale Yuma had become.

Noel immediately took out a handkerchief and gently wiped the cold sweat from Yuma's forehead.

Yet Yuma merely shook his head with a gentle smile.

"I'm fine. I'll get some rest after this."

Lucien frowned at the answer.

Without another word, he pressed the chocolate lightly against Yuma's lips.

"Open."

"…?"

"It's sweet."

"Mn."

Watching how naturally Lucien and Yuma interacted, Mylo leaned closer to Kai and whispered,

"I think I agree with you, Kai."

"About what?"

"About finding a healer. During the examination later, I'm going to look for one. Trust me—I have a good eye for people."

"You're going to find one yourself?"

Mylo nodded firmly.

"It'd be better if there were someone who could check on Yuma whenever he's sick. He seems like the type to suffer in silence. I'm not like that. If I got sick, everyone in the mansion would know."

Mylo ignored the look Kai gave him—a look that practically asked, How exactly would you manage to let everyone in the mansion know? Would you walk around announcing it to everyone?

He simply nodded to himself, as though reassuring himself that it was the right decision.

Lucien wiped the remaining chocolate from Yuma's lips with his finger before straightening up.

"In any case, stay away from Cedric if he approaches you again. If he does anything dangerous, come find me. I have to go."

"Ah, Senior, are you heading to the examination grounds?"

"Yes."

"I'll come with you."

Lucien merely glanced at Mylo without answering.

But Mylo had already waved enthusiastically at the three of them before hurrying after him.

Once the two of them disappeared from sight, Kai rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

"Did you notice that, Noel?"

"What?"

"When Senior Lucien's with Yuma, he's like a gentle breeze. But the moment he talks to anyone else, he turns into an icy wind. He's so cold."

"He's known for rarely showing any expression."

"Oh? You know him?"

"Lucien and Cedric. They're ranked first and second. Strangely enough, they're both so cold and indifferent that a lot of people think they're brothers."

"But... I don't know. Senior Lucien feels warmer to me. Senior Cedric is so cold that people are afraid to go near him. But Senior Lucien... somehow, even though his face is just as cold, it still makes people want to approach him."

"Me too."

Noel answered simply.

"I hate Cedric."

"Wow. You even dropped the 'Senior.'"

Noel merely shrugged before turning around.

His gaze fell on Yuma, who was quietly eating the chocolate.

The piece was a little too big, making one of his cheeks puff out slightly.

Kai clutched his chest dramatically.

"I need to start carrying chocolate too. I want to know what it's like to feed a little brother. Oh, right. Where are you two going after this?"

"To train."

"I—"

"Yuma needs to rest."

Yuma fell silent at Kai's words before smiling.

"Mn."

"Huh. In that case, I'll wander around and memorize the layout of the academy. Let's meet back here at one o'clock. We'll pick up Mylo, have lunch, then relax in the garden until evening."

Kai cheerfully hummed to himself as he headed toward the school building.

Noel turned to Yuma once more.

"I'm going to train. Do you need me to escort you?"

Yuma gently shook his head.

"I need to stop by the headmaster's office."

"Understood."

Noel lowered his head respectfully.

"Then please, go ahead."

Yuma let out a quiet chuckle.

"When we're not in front of high-ranking officials, just speak and act normally."

Noel raised his head.

That smile...

It was so gentle.

For a brief moment, he simply looked at it.

"See you later, Noel."

"…Yeah."

Noel watched Yuma's back as he walked farther away.

His expression returned to its usual blankness.

I knew it...

That smile...

...felt lifeless.

And somehow... it made his chest ache.
