Chapter 19 — Moving Shadows

10 min read•Published Oct 3, 2026

Yuma let out a sigh as he stared at the ring on his finger.

He had tried suppressing his power using the ring Professor made for him, but even then, it was still too much.

His aura had become something light for ordinary soldiers and barely noticeable to the main forces.

But children were different.

What they felt was merely the warmth normal children naturally possessed, and that made him feel strange among them.

As expected… sending me here wasn't a good idea…

Even now, Yuma could still feel the gaze of the teenager named Kai from behind him.

Maybe the boy sensed something unusual about him.

Yuma pressed a hand against his forehead.

But what else could he do? He couldn't back out after coming this far.

He would continue trying to suppress it further, though at the same time, he hoped there wouldn't be too many moments where he forgot to do so.

Because suppressing his aura to this extent…

was exhausting.

It felt like trying to breathe slowly or walking across shattered glass.

Far too complicated.

—"Yuyu?"

"Hm."

Yuma blinked and created a little distance from the three beside him.

"Yes?"

—"Do you understand, Yuyu? That slit-eyed bastard is so cruel! He threw my teacher application form into the trash! Can you believe that?!"

"Really?"

—"Yes! So as revenge, I poured coffee all over his favorite white uniform! Hahahahaha!"

"And then?"

—"…I lost my favorite socks. I found them in the incinerator."

Yuma chuckled softly as Lavis continued grumbling.

—"Give me the communicator."

—"Hey!!"

Hearing Arfy's voice, Yuma focused his attention again.

"How is it?"

—"That's all the data we currently have, Commander. No additional information yet. I've also contacted the previous victims and their families. Unfortunately, none of them remember anything suspicious."

"Any signs of memory manipulation?"

—"None. So it's safe to say those students were simply innocent victims."

"Then I'll personally examine the student here."

—"Yes, Commander."

"Contact me if anything else develops."

—"Understood, Commander."

—"What about me becoming a teacher?!"

—"Enjoy your day, Commander."

"I'm not on vacation."

Yuma smiled faintly as he looked at the building filled with academy applicants.

—"Even so, enjoy your day, Commander."

"Alright."

—"Give me the communicator! I still need to apply to become a teacher—"

Yuma smiled again at Lavis's voice, though Arfy seemed to cut him off firmly.

"Lavis would make a very suitable teacher,"

Yuma murmured while looking at the cheerful faces around him.

Yuma felt Lavis's playful nature would suit children like these well.

"Hm…"

Because Lavis was the liveliest person among everyone Yuma had met.

"Oops."

Kai caught Yuma by the shoulder from behind.

"Don't get separated."

Mylo also grabbed Yuma's hand as though afraid he would get lost.

Even Noel stood beside Yuma like a guard, blocking other students trying to push into the hall.

Yuma blinked slowly.

Children truly were the ones most full of life.

"AAGH!"

Lavis clutched his shoulder with a near tearful expression.

"It's honestly impressive that you managed not to scream sooner."

Bonnie's face remained indifferent as she brushed his hand away.

She needed to check how severe the wound on Lavis's left arm was before healing it.

"What if Yuyu decided to come here if he found out? That's why I tried to hold it in— AAAAAAGH!!"

Lavis screamed again when Bonnie pulled a shard of glass from the cut.

"It hurts, it hurts, gentler…"

"What exactly is this idiot talking about? Who told you to jump toward the enemy's scythe?"

"Then what was I supposed to do when that slit-eyed bastard suddenly charged straight into the enemy? Let him die??"

Lavis pointed at Rue, who was currently being treated by Kru.

The man had a massive hole through his stomach and still hadn't regained consciousness.

Bonnie snorted.

"What? You're both the same. Equally insane."

Lavis stared at Bonnie in disbelief.

How could this crazy girl say that?

What kind of healer carried around a mace and ran directly into battle?

A person meant to stay in the backline charging into war or a soldier recklessly diving into enemies.

Which one was crazier?

Even a baby who had just learned how to poop would choose the first option!!

Ignoring Lavis's rambling, Bonnie continued healing while glancing toward Arfy.

"Does the Commander suspect something?"

"Not really. But I should thank Lavis's nonsense. If he hadn't stalled for time, I might not have answered properly and made the Commander suspicious."

"What do you mean nonsense?! Becoming a teacher is my dream!"

Still ignoring him, the two continued talking.

"But you weren't lying about the information, right?"

"No. I figured the Commander would ask eventually, so I memorized it beforehand. I just didn't expect him to ask while we were in the middle of an attack."

"And Professor?"

"I already contacted him. Hopefully the Commander won't contact us again during the next attack."

Arfy sighed.

While the Commander was away, they had secretly launched an assault on the suspected laboratory.

Only the captains, vice-captains, and several elite members were brought along.

It had already been two days.

The operation could be called both a failure… and not entirely a failure.

Arfy looked toward Chloe, who was trying to stabilize the surviving experiment victims they had rescued.

There were still quite a lot of survivors.

But the number of corpses they found was far greater.

The scale felt disturbingly similar to what happened seven years ago.

"Here."

Hansel appeared with a tired expression while carrying an arm.

"This should belong to Captain Lavis. I found it near the last location."

"Good. Thank you, Hansel."

Bonnie accepted the arm and immediately reattached it while continuing to use her healing power.

"It hurts…"

"Stop whining before I become truly rough with you."

"…sorry."

Leaving the two behind, Arfy and Hansel walked over to Rue, who still hadn't regained consciousness.

"What about Camelia?"

"The guardians trapped the explosives inside their barriers, then Camelia sliced them apart."

"Anyone hiding?"

"No other enemies. After that mysterious man disappeared, the remaining enemies were either killed or taken away by him."

"And that insane researcher?"

Hansel shook his head.

Just as they managed to capture the lead researcher, a mysterious man suddenly appeared.

They only had enough time to save several documents before the man split the researcher in half and burned down the building.

Explosives had apparently been planted throughout the area.

Captain Rue suddenly lost control and chased after the enemy.

After his stomach was pierced through, Captain Lavis also charged forward and lost his arm before the enemy finally disappeared.

What remained afterward was nothing but chaos.

Rescuing victims, retreating with both captains, and salvaging as many documents as possible.

The amount of manpower required felt horribly disproportionate to the number of people they had brought.

Even Captain Arfy himself had been forced to rush back from the frontlines after hearing that the Commander had contacted them.

"But what made Rue so angry?"

Kru sat weakly as he watched the two approach.

"Maybe this."

He handed over a sheet of paper Rue had stubbornly held onto until the very end.

Even while his stomach continued bleeding.

Even while his contamination rose high enough that there was a genuine risk of him losing his mind.

Arfy accepted the paper and unfolded it while Hansel checked the bandages around Rue's stomach.

"Thank you for your hard work."

Breathing heavily, Kru waved his hand weakly.

"I still need to inject purification power once Captain Rue wakes up. He seems genuinely furious. His power keeps fluctuating even while unconscious. If there are any idle healers around, have them prioritize Captain Rue first. If he doesn't wake up and stabilize soon, this could become dangerous."

Hansel nodded quietly.

But a moment later—

he froze.

The air around Arfy suddenly turned cold.

"Captain…?"

"Damn it… We should've killed that bastard or captured that insane researcher alive."

Hansel and Kru stepped closer, then saw the paper nearly crushed in Arfy's hand.

"Insane…"

"That crazy bastard—"

Even the two of them, who rarely cursed, couldn't stop the words from escaping.

Because what was written there was detailed information regarding their Commander—and prince—Yuma.

Even at the bottom, there was an order stating he should be captured because the Commander was considered valuable experimental material.

The document was horrifyingly detailed.

It even included information about how the Commander's power could belong to both aggressive and gentle categories.

And not only that.

His blood type and even the foods he disliked were written there as well.

"This…"

Kru lost his voice.

The only time the Commander had ever been "stripped bare" this thoroughly was when he was kidnapped at the age of three.

And that had also been the day the Emperor died saving him.

The elders explained that the Commander—no, the Prince—had been found inside a room without windows.

Research equipment filled the room.

His face had been deathly pale, and the small body covered in injection marks.

What Kru had heard was—

the Emperor blew himself up after ordering Commander Richard to take the Prince and escape.

It was done to prevent the enemy from fleeing and to keep the documents from falling into the wrong hands.

The incident was so massive that even ordinary civilians knew about it.

There had been countless condolences because the Emperor was known as a wise ruler.

And afterward, the Prince became protected with an obsession-like intensity by the elders.

The case also became infamous because Commander Richard slaughtered everyone around the site.

Even civilians.

His position was stripped away after the incident.

But that also meant—

Kru and Hansel's expressions hardened instantly.

"Someone survived?"

Captain Arfy's voice was ice cold.

"The only people who possessed details this deep were the bastards involved in that incident."

"But how is that even possible…?"

Kru stared at the document with murderous intent.

"Possible or not, some bastard clearly survived and may now endanger the Commander."

Suppressing the violent fluctuations of his power, Arfy handed the document to Hansel.

"Find Misha and have her deliver this directly to the Archduke. Tell him to bring the entire reconnaissance unit here as well. Quietly."

"Yes, sir."

Then Arfy looked at Kru.

"Contact the healers and support-types. Tell them to move quickly and prepare themselves. Once the reconnaissance forces arrive, we move to the next location."

"Yes, Captain."

Kru hurried off immediately.

After issuing his orders, Arfy instantly ran back toward the frontlines where Camelia and the others were.

He needed to confirm whether there were more documents like this.

The red warning stamp reading capture prohibited continued haunting him.

Because that meant—

the superior of the bastard who wrote that document also knew about Yuma's existence.

"Damn it."

The air trembled under his killing intent.

Arfy's expression became terrifyingly cruel.

"Anyone…"

Anyone who dared lay a hand on their prince had to die.

"Haaaa…"

Chaiden let out a long sigh while shutting off the communicator in his hand.

"Keeping Ark from contacting the troops…"

He rubbed at his wrinkled forehead.

"Do you people even understand how difficult that is…?"

Ark was the type who felt obligated to check on his soldiers even if they merely fell off a roof through sheer stupidity.

Preventing someone who contacted the troops every single day from checking on them was practically impossible.

"Haaaa…"

Letting out another sigh, Chaiden felt like he needed to speak with Richard and arrange some sort of plan.

But that could wait.

For now, he had to prepare—

"Please welcome Professor Chaiden La Charmolainder!"

—Clap clap clap—

because he had to deliver the opening speech for the academy registration ceremony.
