CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR — THE EMPTY CHAIR

1 min readPublished Aug 20, 2026

That evening, David went to their favorite restaurant alone.

He sat at their usual table.

Across from him was an empty chair.

He remembered the first time he and Marilyn had discussed movies.

He remembered the old school.

The letters.

The goodbyes.

The reunion.

Everything.

A waiter approached.

“Are you expecting someone?”

David looked at the empty chair.

“Yes.”

“Is she coming?”

David smiled sadly.

“I hope so.”

The waiter left.

David stared at the chair.

Sometimes an empty chair could tell a person more than a thousand words.
