Chapter 13: A Journey Beyond the Village

Morning arrived with clear blue skies.

A gentle breeze carried the fragrance of pine trees through the open windows of the clinic.

Kyle had barely finished organizing the day's medicines when someone knocked urgently on the door.

"Come in."

A middle-aged farmer stepped inside, removing his straw hat.

"Good morning, Kyle."

Kyle smiled.

"Good morning, Mr. Rowan."

"What brings you here?"

The farmer scratched the back of his neck.

"My wife has been ill since yesterday."

"She has a high fever, and she's too weak to leave the house."

"Our farm is a little far from the village."

"I was hoping..."

Kyle nodded before the man could finish.

"I'll come."

The farmer sighed with relief.

"Thank you."

As Kyle reached for his medical bag, Lyra stepped closer.

"I'll go with you."

Kyle looked at her.

"You don't have to."

"I know."

"But carrying medicine through the forest is easier with two people."

A small smile crossed Kyle's face.

"Then I'd be grateful for the help."

Just then, Lumi entered the clinic carrying a basket of freshly dried herbs.

"Are you leaving?"

Kyle nodded.

"A house call."

Lumi placed the basket on the counter.

"Don't worry about the clinic."

"I'll stay here."

Kyle hesitated.

"Will you be alright?"

Lumi puffed out her cheeks.

"I've watched you work for years."

"I can welcome patients and prepare the simple herbal teas."

"If anything serious happens..."

"I'll ask Mother to come."

Kyle chuckled.

"Alright."

"I'll leave it in your hands."

Lumi smiled proudly.

"You can count on me."

A few minutes later...

Kyle and Lyra left the village together.

The narrow forest path stretched quietly before them.

Birds sang among the trees as sunlight filtered through the branches.

After walking for a while, Lyra glanced at Kyle.

"Do you visit patients outside the village often?"

Kyle nodded.

"Quite often."

"Some families live too far away."

"If they can't come to me..."

"I go to them."

Lyra smiled softly.

"You really never stop helping people."

Kyle laughed.

"I suppose I don't."

Neither of them noticed...

High above the forest...

A lone bird circled silently before disappearing toward the western sky.

The forest path grew narrower as Kyle and Lyra continued west.

The village had long disappeared behind the trees.

Sunlight filtered through the branches, scattering patches of gold across the ground.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

The only sounds were birdsong and the steady rhythm of their footsteps.

Lyra glanced around.

"The forest feels different here."

Kyle nodded.

"It does."

"Most villagers don't come this far unless they have a reason."

"Wild herbs grow well in this area."

He pointed toward a cluster of pale blue flowers growing beneath an old oak.

"See those?"

"They're called Silver Bloom."

"They're excellent for reducing inflammation."

Lyra knelt beside the flowers, studying them carefully.

"The leaves are thicker than the ones near the village."

Kyle smiled.

"Because the soil here stays cooler."

Lyra looked at him with admiration.

"You know every corner of this forest."

Kyle laughed softly.

"I've been walking these paths for years."

As they continued their journey, a rustling sound came from the bushes.

Lyra instinctively stopped.

Kyle did the same.

A small white rabbit hopped out, carrying a single leaf in its mouth.

It froze when it noticed them.

Then, just as quickly, it disappeared into the undergrowth.

Lyra let out a quiet breath.

"For a moment..."

"I thought it was something dangerous."

Kyle smiled reassuringly.

"The forest likes surprising people."

"Not every unexpected sound is an enemy."

Lyra returned his smile.

"I'll remember that."

After another few minutes of walking, the trees began to thin.

Beyond them stood a modest farmhouse surrounded by wheat fields and a small vegetable garden.

Thin curls of smoke drifted from the chimney.

Kyle adjusted the strap of his medical bag.

"We're here."

Before they reached the front gate, the farmer who had visited the clinic earlier stepped outside.

Relief spread across his face.

"You made it."

"My wife has been waiting."

Kyle nodded calmly.

"Let's see how she's doing."

As the three entered the farmhouse...

Far away, in another town hundreds of miles from the quiet village, the hunter unfolded a weathered map once again.

This time...

A small circle marked the western forests.

His search was slowly narrowing.

The farmhouse was simple but well cared for.

Fresh herbs hung from the ceiling to dry, filling the room with a pleasant aroma.

Kyle was led into the bedroom, where the farmer's wife lay beneath a wool blanket.

Her face was pale, and beads of sweat covered her forehead.

She smiled weakly as they entered.

"I'm sorry to trouble you again, Kyle."

Kyle shook his head gently.

"You're never a burden."

He placed his medical bag on the table and sat beside her.

"May I check your pulse?"

She nodded.

Kyle carefully felt her wrist before placing the back of his hand against her forehead.

"The fever is still high."

He looked toward Lyra.

"Could you bring me a bowl of cool water?"

"Of course."

Lyra quickly fetched a wooden bowl from the kitchen and filled it with fresh well water.

She returned a moment later and handed it to him.

"Thank you."

Kyle soaked a clean cloth and placed it gently on the woman's forehead.

Then he opened his leather pouch and removed several dried herbs.

Lyra watched with interest.

"Those aren't the same herbs you used yesterday."

Kyle smiled.

"Every illness has its own remedy."

He crushed the herbs together with a small wooden pestle before adding hot water.

A fragrant steam rose from the cup.

"This should help bring the fever down."

The farmer carefully supported his wife as she drank a few small sips.

After several minutes, her breathing became steadier.

The worried expression on the farmer's face finally softened.

"I think she's already looking better."

Kyle nodded.

"The medicine will need a little time."

"Let her rest today."

"And make sure she drinks plenty of water."

"I will."

The farmer bowed gratefully.

"I can never thank you enough."

Before Kyle could answer, Lyra noticed several bundles of medicinal plants hanging near the window.

She walked closer.

"You grow these yourselves?"

The farmer smiled proudly.

"My wife loves tending herbs."

"Whenever we have more than we need, we send them to the village."

Lyra gently touched one of the dried leaves.

"The quality is excellent."

The woman smiled faintly from the bed.

"Perhaps... next season..."

"I could teach you how to grow them."

Lyra returned the smile.

"I'd like that very much."

Kyle watched the exchange quietly.

Seeing Lyra smile so naturally among the villagers made him realize something.

Little by little...

She was beginning to find a place she could truly belong.

By the time Kyle finished writing the prescription, the afternoon sun had begun to sink toward the horizon.

The farmer carefully folded the paper and tucked it into his pocket.

"I'll prepare the medicine exactly as you instructed."

Kyle smiled.

"She should recover within a few days."

"Just don't let her work until the fever is completely gone."

The farmer laughed softly.

"Convincing her to rest will be the hardest part."

His wife rolled her eyes playfully.

"I heard that."

The room filled with quiet laughter.

As Kyle and Lyra prepared to leave, the farmer stopped them.

"Please... wait a moment."

He disappeared into the next room before returning with a small woven basket.

Inside were fresh vegetables, homemade bread, and a bundle of fragrant herbs.

"We don't have much..."

"But please accept this."

Kyle immediately shook his head.

"You've already thanked me enough."

The farmer smiled.

"Then think of it as thanks for both of you."

"My wife says your companion has kind hands."

Lyra looked surprised.

"I only helped a little."

The woman smiled warmly.

"Sometimes a gentle smile is just as healing as medicine."

For a brief moment, Lyra didn't know what to say.

"...Thank you."

Kyle finally accepted the basket with a grateful nod.

"We'll make good use of it."

After saying their farewells, the two began the walk back toward the village.

The evening sky glowed with shades of orange and crimson.

For a while, they walked in comfortable silence.

Then Kyle glanced toward Lyra.

"You've changed."

Lyra looked at him in surprise.

"I have?"

"When we first met..."

"You always seemed ready to leave."

"But today..."

"You smiled."

"You laughed."

"You looked like someone who belonged."

Lyra lowered her eyes.

"I never expected the people here to be so kind."

Kyle smiled.

"They're good people."

"I think they've already started thinking of you as one of us."

Lyra's heart skipped a beat.

She quietly looked ahead.

Could she really belong in a place that was never meant to be her home?

Far beyond the western forests...

The hunter rode beneath the evening sky, following another rumor whispered by passing travelers.

By the time he reached the abandoned shrine they had described...

He found nothing.

Only cracked stone statues...

And years of silence.

He let out a slow breath.

"Another dead end..."

Mounting his horse once more, he turned toward the west.

Sooner or later...

The truth would reveal itself.
