Chapter 14: Beneath the Rain

The morning after their visit to the farmhouse, the village awoke beneath a sky covered with soft gray clouds.

The air was cool, carrying the scent of damp earth.

Kyle stood outside the clinic, checking the weather.

"It might rain this afternoon..."

Lumi stepped out of the clinic with a small woven basket.

"Then we should gather the Moon Cap mushrooms before the rain starts."

Lyra tilted her head.

"Moon Cap mushrooms?"

Kyle smiled.

"They're a rare medicinal mushroom."

"They only grow in the deep forest after several days of moisture."

"They're difficult to find..."

"But they're one of the most valuable ingredients for treating lung illnesses during winter."

Lyra's eyes brightened with curiosity.

"I've never seen one."

Kyle picked up a larger basket.

"Then today will be your first."

Lumi tied the ribbon around her own basket.

"I'll come too!"

Kyle chuckled.

"I was hoping you would."

The three left the village together, following a narrow trail that disappeared beneath towering pine trees.

Drops of water still clung to the leaves from the previous night's mist.

For nearly an hour, they searched quietly.

Lumi suddenly crouched beside an old fallen log.

"I found one!"

Kyle walked over and smiled.

"Good."

"But don't pick it yet."

He knelt beside her.

"See these small white spots beneath the cap?"

Lumi nodded.

"That means it's still too young."

"If we leave it for another week..."

"It'll release its spores."

"Then more mushrooms will grow here next season."

Lumi smiled proudly.

"So we shouldn't take everything."

"Exactly."

Lyra watched the exchange with interest.

"You always think about the future."

Kyle stood up.

"If we only take..."

"And never give nature time to recover..."

"One day, there'll be nothing left."

Lyra quietly looked around the peaceful forest.

In the Emerald Realm...

Her grandmother had once taught her the very same lesson.

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"My grandmother used to say something similar."

Kyle looked at her.

"She sounds like a wise woman."

"...She was."

For a brief moment, Lyra's voice carried a trace of longing.

Just then, a distant roll of thunder echoed through the mountains.

Kyle looked toward the darkening sky.

"The weather is changing faster than I expected."

He turned to Lumi.

"You've already gathered enough mushrooms."

"Take them back to the village."

Lumi blinked.

"What about you two?"

Kyle pointed deeper into the forest.

"There's another place where older Moon Caps grow."

"We'll collect the rest and return before the storm."

Lumi hesitated for a moment before nodding.

"Alright."

"But don't stay too long."

She waved goodbye before hurrying back toward the village, her basket carefully held against her chest.

Kyle watched until she disappeared among the trees.

Then he turned toward Lyra.

"Shall we?"

Lyra smiled.

"Lead the way."

Together...

The two disappeared deeper into the silent forest, unaware that the approaching storm would force them to spend the night far from the safety of the village.

The forest became quieter the deeper they walked.

Towering pines blocked most of the sunlight, leaving only scattered beams filtering through the branches.

Kyle slowed his pace.

"We're close."

Lyra looked around.

"I don't see any mushrooms."

Kyle smiled.

"That's because they don't grow in open places."

He pointed toward a large moss-covered boulder.

"They prefer shade."

"And damp soil."

The two carefully searched the area.

A few moments later, Lyra crouched beside the roots of an ancient oak.

"Kyle..."

"I think I found one."

Kyle walked over.

Nestled among the moss were several mushrooms with silver-gray caps that shimmered faintly in the dim light.

A smile spread across his face.

"Perfect."

"These are fully grown."

Lyra reached for one.

Kyle gently stopped her hand.

"Twist it slowly."

"If you pull too hard..."

"You'll damage the roots beneath."

Lyra nodded.

"I understand."

She carefully twisted the mushroom until it came free.

Kyle looked pleased.

"You learn quickly."

"My grandmother believed nature rewards patience."

Kyle chuckled.

"I think she would have liked this forest."

Before Lyra could answer...

A cold gust of wind swept through the trees.

The leaves above them rustled violently.

Another rumble of thunder echoed overhead.

This time...

It was much closer.

Kyle looked toward the dark clouds gathering above the mountains.

"We should head back."

The first raindrop landed on his shoulder.

Then another.

Within seconds...

The gentle drizzle became a steady rain.

"We're too late."

Lyra pulled her cloak tighter.

"The path will become slippery."

Kyle scanned the forest.

"There should be an old ranger's shelter nearby."

"If it's still standing..."

"We can wait there until the storm weakens."

Lightning flashed across the sky.

A heartbeat later, thunder shook the forest.

The rain poured down relentlessly.

Kyle instinctively reached for Lyra's wrist.

"This way!"

They ran through the trees as the wind howled around them.

Branches swayed overhead, and fallen leaves danced across the muddy ground.

After several minutes...

A small wooden cabin appeared between the trees.

Its roof was old but intact.

Kyle pushed the door open.

"It'll have to do."

The two hurried inside just as another flash of lightning illuminated the forest behind them.

The rain showed no sign of stopping.

Kyle glanced through the doorway before closing it against the storm.

"It looks like..."

"We won't be returning to the village tonight."

Lyra looked at the rain pounding against the wooden walls.

Then, with a small sigh, she smiled.

"I suppose this forest has made the decision for us."

### **Part 3**

Rain continued to drum steadily against the wooden roof.

The small cabin was old, but it offered enough shelter from the storm.

Kyle looked around the room.

An old stone fireplace stood against one wall, with a neat pile of dry firewood stacked beside it.

"It seems travelers still use this place."

He knelt before the fireplace and struck two pieces of flint together.

After several attempts, a small flame flickered to life.

Moments later, the fire crackled warmly, driving away the chill that had settled in the cabin.

Lyra held her hands toward the fire.

"That feels much better."

Kyle smiled.

"I was beginning to think we'd spend the night shivering."

He removed his damp cloak and spread it over a wooden chair to dry.

Lyra did the same.

For a brief moment, silence filled the cabin.

Only the sound of the rain and the crackling fire remained.

Kyle reached for the basket they had carried.

"At least our mushrooms stayed dry."

Lyra looked inside.

"They survived the storm better than we did."

Kyle laughed softly.

"I suppose that's true."

He carefully sorted the Moon Cap mushrooms, placing the largest ones on a clean cloth.

"These should be enough to prepare medicine for several weeks."

Lyra watched him work.

"You really enjoy this."

Kyle paused before answering.

"I do."

"When I prepare medicine..."

"It feels..."

He searched for the right words.

"...Natural."

"As though I've been doing it my entire life."

Lyra tilted her head.

"Perhaps you have."

Kyle smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

A sudden flash of lightning illuminated the cabin through the small window.

Almost instantly, thunder roared overhead.

The old wooden walls trembled slightly.

Without thinking, Lyra looked toward the door.

"The storm is getting worse."

Kyle nodded.

"We'll be safer if we stay here until morning."

He reached into his bag and took out two small wrapped rice cakes.

"I usually carry extra food during long trips."

He handed one to Lyra.

"It's not much..."

"But it should keep us from going hungry."

Lyra accepted it with a grateful smile.

"Thank you."

The two sat quietly beside the fire, sharing their simple meal while listening to the rain.

Outside...

The storm hid the forest beneath a curtain of darkness.

Neither of them noticed that, far beyond the trees, a lone rider had stopped beneath the shelter of a rocky cliff.

The hunter looked toward the lightning flashing over the western forest.

"...A storm."

He pulled his cloak tighter around his shoulders.

"No one would choose to travel on a night like this."

Turning his horse away from the forest, he guided it toward the nearest town.

"There will be nothing to find until dawn."

Unaware of how close fate was slowly bringing their paths together...

The hunter disappeared into the rain.

The storm showed no sign of ending.

Rain continued to beat against the cabin roof while the fire burned quietly between them.

Kyle added another piece of wood to the flames.

"It looks like we'll be here until sunrise."

Lyra looked toward the tiny window.

Outside, the forest had vanished behind sheets of rain.

"I've never seen a storm like this."

Kyle smiled.

"The western forest can be unpredictable."

"It teaches you never to argue with nature."

Lyra chuckled softly.

"I'll remember that."

For a while, they simply watched the dancing flames.

The silence between them no longer felt awkward.

It had become... comfortable.

Kyle leaned back against the wooden wall.

"When I was younger..."

"I used to wonder what lay beyond these forests."

Lyra turned toward him.

"Have you ever left the western kingdom?"

Kyle slowly shook his head.

"No."

"I've visited nearby towns."

"But never farther than that."

He looked into the fire.

"Sometimes..."

"I feel as though I'm searching for something."

"But I don't know what it is."

Lyra quietly lowered her eyes.

She understood that feeling all too well.

She had crossed worlds searching for a single jewel...

Yet now, her heart had begun searching for something else.

Something she couldn't name.

A sudden gust of wind rattled the cabin door.

Kyle stood and checked the wooden latch.

"It should hold."

As he turned back, his foot caught on a loose floorboard.

He stumbled slightly.

Lyra instinctively reached out and caught his arm.

For a brief moment...

They stood closer than either of them expected.

Their eyes met.

Neither of them spoke.

The firelight reflected softly in Lyra's violet eyes.

Kyle blinked and smiled awkwardly.

"...Thank you."

Lyra quickly let go of his arm.

"You've caught me before."

"I suppose we're even now."

Kyle laughed quietly.

"I suppose we are."

The tension disappeared as naturally as it had come.

Outside...

The rain gradually began to soften.

The wind no longer howled through the trees.

Kyle looked toward the window.

"It sounds like the storm is finally passing."

Lyra nodded.

"Tomorrow..."

"We can return to the village."

Neither of them realized...

That this unexpected night in the forest had quietly brought them one step closer to trusting each other.
