Chapter 12: A Quiet Morning

The morning sun rose gently over Lumi's village.

A cool breeze carried the scent of wildflowers through the open windows of the clinic.

Kyle stood near the shelves, arranging jars of dried herbs one by one.

Unlike the day before, the color had returned to his face.

He looked healthier.

Stronger.

Lyra watched him from across the room.

"I'm surprised."

Kyle glanced at her with a puzzled smile.

"About what?"

"You recovered too quickly."

He chuckled.

"I've always healed fast."

"So Lumi tells me."

Lumi, who was sweeping the clinic floor, nodded immediately.

"It's true."

"When Kyle gets sick, he always recovers faster than everyone else."

Lyra lowered her eyes.

"...I see."

She didn't say another word.

Yet something about his answer continued to trouble her.

His fever had not been ordinary.

She was certain of it.

The clinic door opened.

A young farmer stepped inside, holding his wrist.

"I cut myself while repairing a fence."

Kyle invited him to sit.

"Let's have a look."

The wound wasn't deep, but dirt had settled inside it.

Kyle carefully cleaned it before preparing a simple herbal paste.

As he worked, Lyra quietly handed him strips of clean cloth without being asked.

Kyle smiled.

"You're learning our routine."

Lyra smiled back.

"Or perhaps you're becoming easier to understand."

Lumi laughed.

"You two work together better every day."

Kyle looked at Lyra for a brief moment.

"I suppose we do."

For reasons neither of them could explain...

Working side by side had begun to feel completely natural.

Outside the clinic...

The peaceful village continued its ordinary morning.

Unaware that, far beyond the western hills...

Someone had already begun searching for a mystery hidden among countless ordinary lives.

The afternoon passed without incident.

Warm sunlight filled the village streets as people went about their daily routines.

Inside the clinic, the shelves were finally organized.

Kyle placed the last jar in its proper place and let out a satisfied breath.

"There."

"Everything is back where it belongs."

Lyra glanced around the room.

"You keep everything remarkably organized."

Kyle smiled.

"It makes work easier."

"If I waste time searching for herbs, a patient might have to wait."

Lyra nodded in understanding.

"I did the same back home..."

The words slipped out before she realized it.

Kyle looked at her with quiet curiosity.

"Your home."

"You don't talk about it very often."

Lyra lowered her gaze.

"I can't."

"If I think about it too much..."

"I start missing it."

Kyle's expression softened.

"I understand."

Although he couldn't remember his own past...

He knew what it felt like to search for something that was missing.

Just then, Lumi hurried into the clinic carrying a woven basket.

"Mother sent these!"

She placed several freshly baked rolls on the table.

"And she said neither of you is allowed to skip lunch."

Kyle laughed.

"Your mother knows me too well."

Lumi looked at Lyra.

"And she said you have to eat too."

Lyra smiled politely.

"Please thank her for me."

The three sat together around the small wooden table.

For a little while...

There were no mysteries.

No hidden identities.

Only the simple warmth of sharing a meal.

Outside, children laughed as they ran through the village square.

For the first time since arriving in the human world...

Lyra found herself wondering if peace like this could truly last.

Far away, beyond the western border...

The hunter entered a bustling roadside town in a neighboring region.

Travelers filled the streets.

Merchants called out to passing customers.

He tied his horse outside a modest inn before stepping inside.

The room buzzed with conversation.

The hunter quietly ordered a meal and listened.

He never asked direct questions.

Instead...

He waited for others to speak.

An old merchant at the next table laughed.

"I heard someone found a glowing stone near the eastern hills."

Another man shook his head.

"That wasn't magic."

"It was only a rare crystal."

The hunter remained silent as he finished his tea.

Another false lead.

He placed a few coins on the table and stood.

His search would continue.

Somewhere...

The real jewels were still waiting to be found.

The afternoon breeze carried the scent of pine through the open clinic windows.

The day's work had slowed.

Only a few patients remained.

Kyle carefully wrapped a bundle of dried herbs before handing it to an elderly man.

"Boil these twice a day."

"And don't forget to rest."

The old man smiled gratefully.

"I'll do as you say."

After the patient left, Kyle stretched his shoulders.

"It seems today will finally be a quiet one."

Before Lyra could reply, hurried footsteps echoed outside.

A young boy burst into the clinic, breathing heavily.

"Mister Kyle!"

"My little sister fell while playing near the river!"

Kyle immediately picked up his medical bag.

"Is she bleeding?"

The boy nodded quickly.

"She cut her leg on a sharp rock."

"I'll take a look."

Lyra stood up without hesitation.

"I'm coming with you."

Kyle gave a small nod.

"Thank you."

The three hurried toward the riverbank.

A small crowd had already gathered.

A little girl sat on the ground, trying not to cry as her mother comforted her.

Kyle knelt beside her.

"It's alright."

"Let me see."

The cut looked painful, but thankfully it wasn't deep.

Lyra fetched clean water while Kyle gently washed away the dirt.

The frightened child gripped her mother's hand tightly.

Lyra crouched beside her and smiled.

"You're very brave."

"It'll sting for just a moment."

The little girl nodded nervously.

Kyle applied a herbal paste before wrapping the wound with a clean bandage.

"There."

"You'll be able to walk again in a few days."

The child's mother bowed repeatedly.

"Thank you."

"I don't know what we would have done without you."

Kyle smiled warmly.

"Just make sure she doesn't run around for a while."

The little girl puffed out her cheeks.

"But I want to play tomorrow."

Lyra laughed softly.

"If you rest today..."

"You'll heal much faster."

The little girl finally smiled.

"I promise."

As Kyle packed away his supplies, he glanced at Lyra.

"You've become very good at calming frightened patients."

Lyra looked toward the flowing river.

"I've learned..."

"Sometimes kind words heal just as much as medicine."

Kyle smiled.

"I couldn't agree more.

Together, they began the peaceful walk back toward the village, unaware that with each passing day, the bond between them was quietly growing stronger.

The sun had almost disappeared behind the western mountains.

A golden glow spread across the village as Kyle and Lyra returned to the clinic.

Lumi was waiting outside with a lantern in her hands.

"There you are!"

"I was beginning to worry."

Kyle smiled apologetically.

"We had an unexpected patient."

Lumi looked at Lyra.

"Mother asked me to tell you that dinner will be ready soon."

Lyra nodded.

"I'll come after I finish helping Kyle."

Lumi waved before hurrying back home.

Inside the clinic, Kyle placed his medical bag on the table.

He let out a quiet sigh.

"I never imagined becoming a healer would keep me this busy."

Lyra began sorting the herbs they had used during the day.

"You never complain."

Kyle smiled faintly.

"Because every patient who leaves smiling reminds me why I chose this life."

Lyra paused.

"You really love helping people."

"I do."

He looked out through the window at the peaceful village.

"This place gave me a home when I had nowhere else to go."

"I want to protect it."

His words lingered in Lyra's mind.

Protect it...

For a brief moment, she wondered whether she would one day have to leave this peaceful village behind.

Before she could dwell on the thought, Kyle closed the last wooden cabinet.

"That's enough work for today."

"You should get some rest."

Lyra smiled.

"So should you."

They stepped outside together.

The first stars were already appearing above the quiet village.

Far away...

In another province of the western kingdom...

The hunter entered a lively roadside tavern filled with travelers from different lands.

He ordered a simple meal and quietly listened to the conversations around him.

A merchant leaned across the table.

"I heard someone discovered a jewel that shines at night."

Another traveler laughed.

"If that story were true, we'd all be rich by now."

The tavern erupted with laughter.

The hunter remained expressionless.

Another rumor.

Another dead end.

He finished his drink, stood, and picked up his cloak.

As he walked toward the door, the innkeeper called after him.

"Heading west?"

The hunter stopped.

"For now."

The innkeeper shrugged.

"Be careful."

"People say strange things have been happening in the western forests lately."

The hunter's eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.

This was the first rumor that matched the direction of his investigation.

Without another word, he stepped into the night.

His journey was slowly leading him toward the truth...
