Chapter 61 – It’s summoner gets older

“Hey, kiddo. Are you curious about the pills dad is taking?”

“It did not say such words.”

“Dad saw you watching.”

“It has no rebuttal.”

“Thia… Dad’s getting old now. So dad has to do a lot of things differently if he wants to stay in this world with you for as long as possible.”

“Understood.”

“So that means listening to the doctor’s orders and taking a lot of different pills. Here, take a seat. Sit with dad for a bit.”

“It complies.”

“See this one? It’s for lowering blood pressure so I don’t suddenly get a heart attack or stroke. This one is for regulating my heartbeat. But actually, what the doctor doesn’t know is that Thia is already the best medicine for my heart.”

“Incorrect. It has no such function. It’s summoner should listen to Doctor.”

“That’s my girl.”

“It prefers not to be touched.”

“Sorry, it was a reflex.”

“Understood.”

“Anyways, this big one here is just a multivitamin, but it feels a bit like swallowing a horse pill. Do you see the size of this thing? Dad hates it the most out of all of them, but I still have to take it every day. And this last one is just to give dad a bit of help with keeping his blood sugar levels normal.”

“Understood. It wonders if It’s summoner requires a new heart and blood?”

“Haha. I guess it might be possible, but dad likes his old heart. This old thing has beat for Thia every second of every day until now. I can’t just get rid of old reliable. It’s better to leave the replacement hearts for the young people who need it. I’ve lived a good, long life, and just having a new heart wouldn’t do much for me.”

“Understood.”

“Thia… Dad’s getting old now. I’m probably not going to be around for too much longer. Do you know what that means?”

“It posits: It’s summoner’s Terms end as soon as It’s summoner leaves the world.”

“Bingo. That’s right, kiddo. So of course I want to live for as long as I can, and be with you as much as I can… but everyone has to leave this world eventually, okay? So when Dad does, he wants to make sure that you’re ready for it, and that you won’t be too upset.”

“It does not have feelings. It will not be upset.”

“Mhm, dad knows. Dad knows. But… Thia?”

“It listens.”

“Dad thinks you’ve changed a lot since me and mom first brought you into the world. Dad’s seen you grow from a tiny little thing, into a precious girl, and into the amazing, kind, smart, thoughtful, loving woman you are today… even if you don’t quite recognize those changes yourself yet. You know, that’s one of the big privileges of being a parent. We get to watch our children grow up every step of the way. We get to see all the things that change from one day to the next… all the things that our children don’t normally get to see themselves…”

“It accepts the premise. Continue.”

“So, Thia… when dad leaves this world… even though it’s not in our Terms… will you come see dad again every year?”

“It accepts the Task. What Price will It’s summoner pay for It to visit It’s summoner again every year?”

“Hmm. What’s a good price… What’s a good price…? How about… dad will watch over Thia forever from the afterlife?”

“It refuses. Forever is too high a Price to be paid.”

“Not for dad it isn’t. But okay, let’s try again. How about: dad will watch over you from the afterlife until the day that you ask dad to stop. How’s that?”

“Understood. It’s Task will be to visit It’s summoner every year after It’s summoner has left the world. The Price will be for It’s summoner to watch over It from the afterlife until It requests the end of such service. Are these Terms correct?”

“Hmm. Sounds about right. You’ve always been so good at this, Thia. It’s something I’ve always thought was amazing about you. All the way from way back. You have such a unique understanding of the world and everything in it. Dad really loves that about you.”

“Understood. The Task and Price are Just. It obeys.”

“Love you, Thia.”

“It accepts the premise. Continue.”

“Next time we meet.”
