Chapter 22: The Road Unknown
The western road disappeared beneath their feet as the last lights of the village faded behind them.
Kyle looked over his shoulder.
The rooftops were barely visible now.
For the first time since he had been found in the forest, he was leaving the only place he remembered as home.
Lyra walked quietly beside him.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Kyle broke the silence.
"Do you regret leaving?"
Lyra looked at him.
"No."
"Are you afraid?"
She hesitated.
"A little."
Kyle smiled faintly.
"Me too."
That answer surprised her.
"You?"
"I've never traveled this far."
"I thought healers were supposed to be brave."
Kyle laughed.
"Who told you that?"
"No one."
"Then don't spread the rumor."
Lyra smiled.
The road gradually became narrower as they moved away from the farms.
Tall trees surrounded them on both sides, blocking most of the moonlight.
Kyle adjusted the strap of his bag.
"We should find a place to rest before it gets completely dark."
Lyra looked around.
"There is a small stream nearby."
"How do you know?"
She paused.
"I heard water."
Kyle listened.
A faint rushing sound reached his ears.
"You're right."
They followed the sound until they reached a narrow stream flowing between the trees.
Kyle placed their bags beside a large tree.
"This will do for tonight."
Lyra looked at the dark forest.
"Are you sure?"
"We can't keep walking in the dark."
"We'll make a small fire."
Lyra nodded.
While Kyle gathered dry branches, Lyra collected several edible leaves and wild berries.
When she returned, Kyle was struggling with the fire.
She watched him for a moment.
"Do you need help?"
"I have it under control."
The branch slipped from his hands.
Lyra laughed.
"Of course."
Kyle gave her an embarrassed look.
"Don't tell Lumi."
"I won't."
Together, they finally managed to light the fire.
Its warm glow pushed back the darkness around them.
For a while, everything was peaceful.
Then Kyle looked at Lyra.
"You know..."
"I never imagined my first journey outside the village would be like this."
Lyra smiled.
"Neither did I."
Kyle stared into the flames.
"But somehow..."
"I'm glad you're here."
Lyra's smile slowly faded into something softer.
"So am I."
Neither noticed the faint movement between the trees.
Someone was watching them.
And this time...
The hunter was closer than they thought.
The small fire crackled softly between them.
Kyle sat against the tree, studying the map he had brought from the village.
Lyra leaned closer.
"Where are we?"
Kyle pointed to a narrow line on the parchment.
"Here."
"And where are we going?"
He moved his finger farther west.
"I'm not completely sure."
Lyra raised an eyebrow.
"You don't know?"
Kyle gave her an embarrassed smile.
"I know the general direction."
"That's not the same thing."
"I know."
Lyra laughed quietly.
Kyle folded the map.
"There should be an abandoned hunting cabin somewhere beyond the stream."
"If we reach it tomorrow, we'll have a safer place to stay."
Lyra looked into the darkness beyond the fire.
"Do you think the people following us know this road?"
Kyle's expression became serious.
"Probably."
"Then we should avoid the main paths."
Lyra nodded.
"I agree."
A sudden rustling came from the bushes.
Both of them turned.
Kyle immediately reached for the small knife at his side.
The sound came again.
Closer.
Lyra stood slowly.
"Kyle..."
"Stay behind me."
A small animal suddenly darted out of the bushes.
It was a rabbit.
Kyle lowered the knife and sighed.
"Just a rabbit."
Lyra smiled.
"You looked very serious."
"I was protecting us."
"From a rabbit?"
Kyle looked at her.
"It could have been a very dangerous rabbit."
Lyra covered her mouth to hide her laughter.
"Of course."
Kyle shook his head, smiling despite himself.
The tension disappeared.
But neither noticed the faint shadow moving farther between the trees.
The hunter had stopped several hundred steps away.
One of his men whispered,
"They're camping beside the stream."
The hunter looked toward the distant fire.
"Don't approach."
"Why?"
"Because they're expecting us."
He studied the dark forest around them.
"If we frighten them now..."
"They'll change direction."
The hunter turned away.
"We wait until morning."
Back beside the fire, Kyle yawned.
"You should sleep."
Lyra looked at him.
"What about you?"
"I'll stay awake for a while."
"You've been working all day."
"I'll be fine."
Lyra shook her head.
"No."
"I'll take the first watch."
Kyle looked surprised.
"You?"
"I can stay awake."
He smiled.
"I don't doubt that."
"But if you hear anything..."
"Wake me."
Lyra nodded.
"I promise."
Kyle eventually closed his eyes.
The fire slowly grew smaller.
Lyra sat quietly beside it, watching the darkness.
She didn't know that somewhere beyond the trees...
A hunter was watching them.
And she didn't know that the road ahead would soon force her to reveal more than she wanted Kyle to know.
The night grew colder.
The fire had almost burned down to glowing embers, and the forest had become completely silent.
Lyra remained awake beside Kyle.
She watched the darkness between the trees carefully.
Something felt wrong.
Not because she could hear anything...
But because the forest was too quiet.
She slowly stood.
Kyle was still asleep beneath the tree.
Lyra stepped a few paces away from the fire.
Her hand instinctively moved beneath her clothes.
One of the Fox Jewels felt warm.
She closed her eyes.
A faint pulse traveled through her fingers.
For a moment...
She sensed something far away.
Not another jewel.
Something else.
Someone.
Her eyes opened immediately.
She looked toward the northern side of the forest.
Nothing.
Only trees.
Lyra whispered,
"...Who's there?"
No answer came.
She waited.
Then a small branch snapped.
Lyra's body tensed.
She took one step backward.
The jewel beneath her clothes grew warmer.
She quickly released her hand.
The light disappeared.
Behind her, Kyle stirred.
"Lyra..."
She turned.
His eyes were still closed.
"You should sleep."
"I'm fine."
Kyle slowly opened his eyes.
"You said that yesterday too."
Lyra smiled faintly.
"I wanted to make sure nothing happened."
Kyle sat up.
"Did you hear something?"
She hesitated.
"...A branch."
"Probably an animal."
"Probably."
Kyle looked at her for a moment.
Then he noticed the distant darkness she had been watching.
"Something is bothering you."
Lyra lowered her gaze.
"I don't know what it is."
Kyle stood and walked toward her.
"You don't have to tell me everything."
Lyra looked at him.
"But..."
"If you're afraid, you don't have to face it alone."
His words reminded her of what he had told her before leaving the village.
She smiled softly.
"I know."
Suddenly...
A strange cry echoed from somewhere beyond the trees.
Kyle immediately turned toward it.
"What was that?"
Lyra's expression changed.
She recognized the sound.
It wasn't an animal.
It was a signal.
Someone was communicating through the forest.
Kyle reached for his knife.
"We should leave."
"Now?"
"Yes."
He quickly extinguished the fire and gathered their belongings.
Lyra looked toward the darkness one last time.
Whatever had made that sound...
It had been close.
Far beyond the trees, the hunter heard the same signal.
One of his men approached.
"They've noticed us."
The hunter nodded.
"Then we move."
He mounted his horse.
"But don't approach them."
"We follow from a distance."
The horses disappeared silently into the darkness.
Meanwhile, Kyle and Lyra continued westward beneath the moonlight.
Neither knew exactly where the road would lead.
But both understood one thing now.
They were no longer traveling alone.
The forest became darker as Kyle and Lyra followed the narrow path.
Neither of them spoke.
Every few minutes, Kyle glanced behind them.
Nothing.
Only the trees.
Finally, Lyra stopped.
"Kyle."
He turned.
"What is it?"
She pointed ahead.
A faint light flickered between the trees.
Kyle narrowed his eyes.
"It looks like a lantern."
"Someone is there."
They approached cautiously.
The light came from a small abandoned cabin beside the road.
Its wooden walls were covered with moss, and one of its windows had been broken.
Kyle pushed the door open.
The hinges creaked loudly.
Inside, there was an old table, a fireplace, and two wooden beds.
"No one's been here recently."
Lyra stepped inside.
"At least we can rest."
Kyle examined the room carefully.
"Stay here."
"I'll check around the cabin."
Lyra nodded.
While Kyle searched outside, Lyra noticed something carved into the wooden wall.
She moved closer.
Her heart suddenly stopped.
It was the same symbol she had seen above the cave.
A fox...
With nine tails.
Lyra reached toward it.
The moment her fingers touched the carving...
A faint green glow appeared beneath the wood.
She immediately pulled her hand away.
The glow disappeared.
"Kyle..."
Footsteps approached outside.
Lyra quickly stepped away from the wall.
Kyle entered.
"Everything is clear."
He noticed her expression.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
He looked toward the wall.
Then back at her.
"You look frightened."
Lyra forced a smile.
"I just remembered something."
"What?"
She lowered her eyes.
"Nothing important."
Kyle didn't push her.
Instead, he placed his bag on the table.
"We should sleep."
"You take the bed."
Lyra shook her head.
"No."
"You need it more."
Kyle smiled.
"Then we'll share the room and take turns."
Lyra nodded.
Outside...
A distant horse stopped between the trees.
The hunter looked toward the small cabin.
One of his men whispered,
"They're inside."
The hunter raised a hand.
"No one approaches."
He stared at the faint light coming from the cabin window.
"They're tired."
"Tomorrow..."
"They'll be easier to follow."
Inside the cabin, Kyle closed his eyes.
Lyra remained awake for a few moments, staring at the strange symbol carved into the wall.
She didn't understand why it had reacted to her touch.
And she didn't know...
That the symbol was not merely a forgotten carving.
It was the first sign that their journey had taken them onto an ancient path connected to the Emerald Realm.
