Chapter 23: The Hidden Path

Morning arrived quietly.

A pale light entered through the broken window of the abandoned cabin.

Lyra opened her eyes first.

For a moment, she forgot where she was.

Then she remembered the journey.

The forest.

The hunter.

And the strange symbol carved into the wall.

She immediately looked toward it.

The fox with nine tails was still there.

But the faint green glow from the night before had disappeared.

Lyra slowly approached the carving.

She touched it again.

Nothing happened.

"Maybe I imagined it..."

"Imagined what?"

She quickly turned.

Kyle was awake.

"Nothing."

He sat up and stretched.

"You've been staring at that wall since I opened my eyes."

Lyra smiled nervously.

"It's an unusual carving."

Kyle stood and examined it.

"A fox with nine tails."

"Have you seen anything like it before?"

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

He studied the symbol for several seconds.

"Neither have I."

They packed their belongings and left the cabin.

Outside, the forest looked completely different under the morning light.

Kyle checked the map.

"The western road should be somewhere ahead."

Lyra looked at the trees.

"Then let's avoid it."

Kyle raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"Because if they're following us, they'll expect us to use the main road."

Kyle considered her words.

"You're right."

They turned toward a narrower trail hidden beneath thick bushes.

The path was difficult to follow, but Lyra seemed strangely comfortable walking through the forest.

Kyle noticed.

"You've done this before."

She smiled.

"Perhaps I'm simply good at finding my way."

They continued for nearly an hour.

Then Lyra suddenly stopped.

Kyle nearly walked into her.

"What happened?"

She pointed ahead.

Between the trees stood a stone arch covered in moss.

At its center was the same symbol from the cabin.

The nine-tailed fox.

Lyra's heart began racing.

Kyle stepped closer.

"This wasn't on the map."

Lyra stared at the symbol.

Then...

A faint green light appeared beneath their feet.

The forest fell completely silent.

And somewhere beyond the stone arch...

Something moved.

Kyle instinctively stepped in front of Lyra.

"Stay behind me."

Lyra didn't answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the stone arch.

The faint green light beneath their feet slowly spread across the ground, forming thin lines between the roots and stones.

Kyle looked down.

"What is happening?"

"I don't know."

Lyra's voice was barely a whisper.

The light suddenly disappeared.

The forest became silent again.

Kyle carefully approached the arch.

He touched the stone.

Nothing happened.

"Maybe it's just an old ruin."

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

"How can you be sure?"

She stared at the fox symbol.

"I don't know..."

"I just am."

Kyle looked at her curiously.

Before he could ask another question, a deep sound came from beyond the arch.

A low growl.

Kyle immediately reached for his knife.

"Get behind me."

This time Lyra obeyed.

The bushes on the other side of the arch began to move.

Something was coming.

Kyle tightened his grip.

Then a large gray wolf stepped into view.

Its fur was wet, and one of its front legs was bleeding.

Lyra immediately noticed the injury.

"It's hurt."

Kyle lowered his knife.

"Don't move too quickly."

The wolf stared at them suspiciously.

Lyra slowly stepped forward.

Kyle caught her arm.

"Lyra."

"It's afraid."

"That doesn't mean it won't attack."

She gently freed her arm.

"I know."

She crouched several feet away from the animal.

The wolf growled again.

Lyra remained still.

"It's alright."

"We won't hurt you."

The animal's ears slowly lowered.

Kyle watched in disbelief.

The wolf took one cautious step toward her.

Then another.

Finally, it lowered its injured leg.

Kyle understood.

"Let me see."

He approached slowly.

The wound wasn't deep, but a sharp piece of wood had pierced the flesh.

He removed it carefully and cleaned the wound with water from his flask.

The wolf remained unusually calm.

When Kyle finished bandaging its leg, it stood.

For a moment, it looked directly at Lyra.

Then it turned toward the stone arch.

It walked a few steps...

And stopped.

As if waiting for them.

Kyle looked at Lyra.

"I think it wants us to follow."

Lyra stared at the path beyond the arch.

"I think so too."

They exchanged a brief glance.

Then followed the wolf into the forest.

Neither of them knew where the hidden path would lead.

But far behind them...

The hunter had finally reached the abandoned cabin.

He dismounted and entered.

His eyes immediately fell on the carved fox.

He touched it.

Nothing happened.

His expression darkened.

"So..."

"They've found the old path."

He turned toward his men.

"Find them."

"Before they discover where it leads."

The wolf led them deeper into the forest.

The path became narrower with every step, forcing Kyle and Lyra to walk one behind the other.

Strangely, the farther they went, the quieter the forest became.

No birds.

No insects.

Not even the sound of wind moving through the branches.

Kyle looked around uneasily.

"Something is wrong."

Lyra nodded.

"I feel it too."

The wolf suddenly stopped.

It stood beside an enormous tree whose roots twisted across the ground like old ropes.

Lyra approached carefully.

"What are you showing us?"

The wolf lowered its head.

Then it scratched the earth with one paw.

Kyle crouched beside it and moved some leaves aside.

Beneath them was a small stone covered with strange markings.

Lyra's eyes widened.

"The same symbol."

Kyle brushed away more dirt.

The marking was clearer this time.

A fox with nine tails surrounded by a circle of tiny symbols.

"Do you recognize them?"

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

But something inside her told her otherwise.

She placed her hand above the stone without touching it.

The jewel beneath her clothes suddenly became warm.

Kyle noticed.

"Lyra?"

She quickly pulled her hand back.

"I don't know what's happening."

The stone began to glow.

A thin green line appeared beneath it and stretched toward the roots of the enormous tree.

The roots slowly separated.

Behind them was a narrow opening.

Kyle stared.

"There's a passage."

The wolf walked toward it.

Lyra looked at Kyle.

"Should we follow?"

Kyle hesitated.

"Normally, I'd say no."

She smiled slightly.

"But?"

"But we've already come this far."

He sighed.

"Stay close to me."

They entered the passage.

The moment they crossed the opening, the roots slowly moved back into place behind them.

Kyle turned.

The entrance had completely disappeared.

"That's not good."

Lyra looked ahead.

A faint green glow illuminated the tunnel walls.

There were drawings everywhere.

Foxes with nine tails.

Strange trees.

A kingdom surrounded by emerald-colored mountains.

And at the center of one mural...

A young fox standing beside a woman.

Kyle stopped.

Something about the figure felt strangely familiar.

His head suddenly began to ache.

He pressed his hand against his temple.

"Not again..."

Lyra rushed toward him.

"Kyle!"

He closed his eyes.

For a brief moment, another image flashed through his mind.

A palace.

A crown.

Someone calling his name.

Not Kyle.

A different name.

He couldn't hear it clearly.

Then the vision vanished.

Kyle opened his eyes.

Lyra was holding his arm.

"Are you alright?"

He looked at her.

"I..."

He stopped.

The name was still somewhere inside his mind.

Just beyond his reach.

Before he could say anything...

A deep roar echoed through the tunnel.

The wolf turned toward the darkness ahead.

Lyra's expression changed.

"That wasn't the wolf."

Kyle slowly reached for his knife.

Something much larger was approaching.

And this time...

They had nowhere to run

The roar echoed through the tunnel again.

The walls trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Kyle tightened his grip on the knife.

"Lyra, stay behind me."

The wolf growled and lowered its body.

Something was approaching.

Slowly...

A massive shadow appeared at the far end of the tunnel.

Two pale eyes emerged from the darkness.

Lyra's heart raced.

"What's that?"

Kyle didn't answer.

The creature stepped into the green light.

It was larger than an ordinary wolf, with dark fur and long curved horns.

But instead of attacking...

It stopped.

Its eyes moved from Kyle to Lyra.

Then to the jewel hidden beneath Lyra's clothes.

The creature suddenly lowered its head.

Kyle stared in confusion.

"It..."

"It's bowing."

Lyra couldn't move.

The creature remained completely still.

Then it stepped aside.

Behind it was another passage.

At the end of that passage stood an enormous stone door.

Nine tails had been carved across its surface.

Kyle approached cautiously.

"There must be something behind that door."

Lyra reached toward it.

The moment her fingers touched the stone...

The jewel beneath her clothes erupted with warmth.

The nine tails on the door began glowing one after another.

One.

Two.

Three.

Lyra pulled her hand back.

The glow stopped.

Kyle stared at her.

"Lyra..."

"I don't understand."

Neither of them noticed the wolf looking toward the tunnel they had entered from.

Its ears suddenly lifted.

Someone was coming.

A faint metallic sound echoed through the passage.

Footsteps.

Then another.

Kyle turned sharply.

"Someone followed us."

Lyra's face went pale.

The hunter had found the hidden path.

But the creature standing before the stone door suddenly growled.

The sound shook the entire tunnel.

Kyle looked at Lyra.

"We have to move."

"But where?"

He pointed toward the stone door.

"Through there."

Lyra stared at the ancient entrance.

"I don't know how to open it."

Kyle stepped beside her.

"Then we'll find out."

Behind them...

The footsteps grew louder.

The hunter's voice finally echoed through the darkness.

"Lyra..."

She froze.

He knew her name.

Kyle looked at her in shock.

The hunter continued from somewhere beyond the tunnel.

"You can run..."

"But you can't hide forever."

Lyra's jewel suddenly began to glow again.

This time...

The stone door opened by itself.

A blinding emerald light flooded the tunnel.

And for the first time...

Kyle saw what was waiting on the other side
