CHAPTER 4: THE TRAINING BEGINS
The training chamber was a cathedral of absolute silence.
Two days.
Only forty-eight hours within the outside world remained before the Elder God Tournament would tear the cosmic order apart. Beyond the threshold, Zalama stood alone, his heavy arms folded behind his back as he stared into the gargantuan void of the entrance.
His expression remained carved in stone, but his eyes betrayed a profound, unsettling weight.
Concern.
He knew the sheer magnitude of the potential pacing within those walls. Yet, raw potential was nothing more than an unlit match against the tempest that awaited them. The tournament would gather predators from timelines and dimensions forgotten by time itself—beings whose very existence defied the laws the multiverse was built upon. Monsters far eclipsing anything Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Jiren, or even Yamoshi had ever been forced to bleed for.
Zalama slowly closed his eyes, his voice a low rumble that barely carried across the stone.
"Two days… That is all the time they have left before the tournament begins. Every second matters now. They must decide for themselves how far they are willing to go."
Inside, the five warriors formed a loose, uneasy circle against the blinding white expanse.
Goku broke the stillness, his usual carefree grin replaced by a taut, searching seriousness. "So… what do you guys think? Two days isn't enough to polish every weakness. We need something that tears open the limits we haven't even found yet."
Vegeta crossed his arms, his lip curling into a sharp, dismissive line. "Hmph. At last, Kakarot, you acknowledge the obvious. Comfort is the enemy now. The moment a warrior starts admiring his progress, he has already begun to fall behind."
Goku raised an eyebrow, a familiar spark of amusement dancing in his eyes. "Comfortable? Vegeta, you're the one who keeps trying to prove you're stronger than me every five minutes."
Vegeta's eyes narrowed into lethal glares. "Because you constantly give me a reason to."
Gohan stood quietly to the side, watching the silent friction between the two veterans. Jiren remained an unmoving monolith, his expression entirely sealed off from the world.
It was Yamoshi who broke the rhythm, turning his gaze away from the group and out toward the infinite horizons of the chamber.
"Training together may not be what we need."
Every head snapped toward him. Goku tilted his head. "Really?"
Yamoshi nodded slowly. "We've already learned from one another without ever having to fight. We've observed each other's strengths, sensed the differences in our power, and exposed the shape of our abilities simply by standing together. But our paths are not the same. If we train as one group, we may only learn how to adapt to one another instead of understanding ourselves."
His ancient gaze swept across them, carrying the weight of eons. "Each of us draws strength from something different. Goku follows instinct. Vegeta forces himself through pride and determination. Gohan seeks control over the power within him. Jiren relies on discipline and absolute resolve. My path is different from all of yours."
He turned completely away, looking out toward the distant, hazy stretches of the white expanse. "That is why training together will not be enough. I need to understand my own path of power more clearly. I don't need to know where my power came from to pursue that goal. I need to discover how far it can go, how much of it I can control, and what kind of warrior I become when I rely on it completely."
Jiren finally lifted his head, his dark eyes locking onto the ancient Saiyan. "You intend to train alone?"
Yamoshi gave a faint, definitive nod. "Yes. Not because I believe I am stronger alone. Because solitude will help me focus on the path that belongs to me. Training beside the others would only make me measure myself against their methods. I need to understand my own strength without comparing it to anyone else's."
His voice was cold, stripped of hostility, anchored only by the grim wisdom of someone who knew the cost of absolute mastery.
Vegeta offered a sharp, approving smirk. "At least one of you understands."
Without waiting for a reply, the Prince of All Saiyans turned his back on them. "I have no intention of wasting the final days discussing strategies when I could be forcing my body and mind through every barrier they have built."
Goku watched him stride away. "And there he goes."
Vegeta paused for a fraction of a second, his back still turned. "Don't misunderstand me, Kakarot. I don't train alone because I dislike fighting alongside others. I train alone because there are certain battles a warrior must fight against himself."
Goku's smile vanished.
"When the tournament begins, nobody will care how hard we trained together," Vegeta continued, his voice dropping into a fierce, gravelly register. "Nobody will care how well we coordinated. What matters is whether we can stand alone when everything else has been taken away."
He glanced back over his shoulder, his eyes burning with a dark, unyielding fire. "When fear, pain, and doubt strip everything else from me, I intend to find out what remains. That is the warrior I mean to become."
With that, Vegeta dissolved into the blinding distance, pressing deeper into the chamber's heart.
Yamoshi watched him go. "I don't know him well enough to say whether he has changed. But from what I've seen, he still carries the same pride and determination that brought him here."
Goku chuckled quietly. "Yeah, that's Vegeta. He'd rather wrestle his own shadow than admit it taught him something."
Yamoshi turned as well, his primordial aura casting a soft, shimmering distortion around his boots as he began to walk in the opposite direction.
Gohan tracked his movement, stepping forward. "Yamoshi… you really believe training alone is going to be enough?"
Yamoshi halted, his stride breaking. "No."
Gohan blinked in surprise.
Yamoshi turned his head halfway back. "I don't believe training alone is enough. I believe I need to train consistently and understand myself as I grow stronger. I don't need to uncover some ancient origin or hidden explanation. My goal is to improve, and I will let my actions reveal what I am capable of."
His eyes were dead set, cold and completely composed. "Power is only useful when the person wielding it has the discipline to control it. That is what I intend to develop."
Gohan offered a slow, respectful nod. "I understand. Strength can be a gift and still feel like a question."
Yamoshi offered a brief, respectful inclination of his head before vanishing into the white mist.
Goku looked between the empty spaces where his comrades had just stood, then turned back to the remaining two. "Well… I guess everyone's got their own idea of training. Mine usually involves getting hit until I figure something out."
Jiren stared ahead, his voice a low, steady rumble. "That is because everyone here is different. A method that reveals one warrior may conceal another."
Goku tilted his head. "What about you?"
Jiren remained silent for several long, agonizing seconds, the air between them growing thick with unspoken tension. "I will train with whoever can force me to confront what I have not yet overcome."
A familiar, eager grin crept onto Goku's face. "Sounds like you're looking at me."
Jiren met his gaze dead-on. "Perhaps. But strength alone is not what I am measuring."
Gohan stepped forward, his boots crunching against the invisible floor. "Wait."
Both Goku and Jiren turned.
Gohan's face had shifted. The lingering softness of his everyday demeanor had vanished entirely, replaced by a razor-sharp, uncompromising resolve.
"I want to train with Jiren."
Goku blinked, caught off guard. "You do?"
Gohan nodded, his voice steady. "Yes. I need to."
Jiren studied him like a hawk evaluating prey. "Why?"
Gohan clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white. "Because I know what you're capable of. And I know that if I train with someone who can push me beyond my limits, I won't have the chance to hide behind preparation or restraint."
He shifted his gaze to his father. "I've spent a long time trying to understand my strength. Sometimes I rely too much on anger. Sometimes I hesitate because I'm afraid of losing control. But this tournament isn't going to give me time to hesitate."
Gohan's eyes flashed with a sudden, fierce crimson intent. "I need someone who will force me to fight seriously from the beginning. If I lose control, I need to face that truth now—not discover it when someone else's life is on the line."
Jiren didn't flinch. For a fraction of a second, a subtle shift rippled through the Pride Trooper's austere expression—the quiet, undeniable birth of profound respect.
"Then don't expect me to protect you from your own weakness."
Gohan smiled, a fierce, determined expression that mirrored his father's spirit. "I wouldn't want you to. I want to overcome it."
Goku stepped back, raising his hands in a gesture of surrender. "Alright. I guess that's decided."
He looked around the vast, echoing expanse of the chamber. Yamoshi was already a distant shimmer on the horizon. Vegeta had long since disappeared into the white void. And Gohan and Jiren had forged their own crucible right here.
Goku stood completely alone.
For a moment, the silence pressed down on him from all sides. Then, a wide, thrilled smile broke across his face.
"Guess that leaves me."
He cracked his knuckles, the sharp pop echoing like thunder. "That's fine. I've always liked finding the next step myself."
His eyes hardened, burning with the relentless fire of a true martial artist. "If everyone else is going to discover their own limits, then I'll discover mine. And if there's something beyond them, I'll chase it until it stops running."
The chamber held its breath.
Then—BOOM.
Gohan exploded forward, turning the air beneath his feet to glass.
Jiren moved to meet him with terrifying, instantaneous precision.
Their fists collided dead center in a catastrophic cataclysm of ki, sending a vicious shockwave ripping across the white plains of the chamber, tearing the ground into white dust.
Goku threw his arm up to block the gale-force pressure, his eyes widening in sheer exhilaration. "Whoa! They didn't even wait for a signal!"
Gohan spun mid-air, driving a furious, violet-clad kick downward.
Jiren caught it with a single, unyielding palm, the impact creating a deafening screech of displaced space.
They didn't hold back. They didn't exchange words. They didn't hesitate.
And miles away from the roaring clash, three solitary figures forged their own destinies in silence.
Yamoshi stood alone, closing his eyes to commune with the primordial currents of his ancient blood.
Vegeta stood alone, letting the crushing weight of his own destructive aura tear at his flesh to force a breakthrough.
Goku stood alone, rolling his shoulders as he stepped into the white unknown to chase a ghost beyond perfection.
Three warriors.
Three different philosophies of power.
Three distinct personalities, walking paths that would either reshape the multiverse or burn them to ash.
Outside, watching through the veil of the threshold, Zalama let a faint, rare smile touch his lips.
"Interesting…"
His golden eyes narrowed against the light. "They have finally stopped training to become stronger than one another."
He watched the distant, violent shockwaves of Gohan and Jiren's battle echo through the endless white.
"Now they're training to become stronger than themselves. That is a more difficult victory—and a more honest one."
Inside, the war against their own limitations raged on.
No one knew what trials awaited them in the dark hours ahead. No one knew what impossible tiers of power they would manage to drag out of the void.
And most terrifyingly of all...
Nobody knew what monsters they would become when the two days were finally over.
