The Debt I Inherited
My name is Lena Caruso, I am twenty-six, and I work as a bookkeeper at a small accounting firm in Chicago.
After my father dies in what the police call a car accident, I find a notebook in his garage that shows he owed four hundred thousand dollars to the Moretti crime family.
Two days later, Dante Moretti, the family's underboss, shows up at my apartment and offers me a deal: I can work as his private bookkeeper for one year, and my father's debt will be erased.
I accept because I have no other choice, and I move into a world of cash, secrets, and rules I do not understand.
Dante is cold and controlling, but he is also fair in ways I did not expect, and our arguments slowly turn into something much more dangerous than the debt itself.
While I clean up the family's books, I discover that someone has been stealing millions from the Morettis for years, and every trail of missing money leads back to Dante's uncle Salvatore.
I then learn that my father was an FBI informant and that his death was not an accident. Dante knew part of the truth and kept it from me, so I walk away from him and straight into the hands of an FBI agent who wants me to wear a wire.
I have to choose between justice and the man I love, and the choice I make costs more than I expected. In the end I help bring down the man who killed my father, and I decide on my own terms what my life with Dante will look like.
