Shani is a young princess of Gildan, a kingdom where everyone is the same. Pale skin. Pale eyes. Pale hair. Everyone but her. Born from a union her kingdom believes should never have happened, Shani wears a crystal bangle that erases everything she is: her brown skin, her pointed ears, even her glow. All so the people around her can be comfortable. She doesn't mind. As long as everyone is happy, it is worth it. But the palace is not as safe as she believes. And the people she loves are not always who she thinks they are. As the world she knows begins to crack at the edges, Shani must decide who she is beyond the bracelet, and whether the love she has fought so hard to keep was ever really hers to begin with. Because sometimes the ones who say they love you are the ones holding the cage door shut.
