Chapter 1: Three Jobs, One Dream

The delivery app pinged for the eleventh time in an hour, and Damien Veil didn't even look at the screen before he was already moving.

Pickup: Harrow Street Deli. Drop-off: 14 minutes away.

He clipped his phone back onto the handlebar mount, checked the insulated bag strapped to his back, and pulled out into traffic. Rain hadn't started yet, but the sky over the city had that gray, heavy look that promised it soon would. Good. Rain meant more orders. More orders meant more money. And money was the only thing on Damien's mind lately — not because he was greedy, but because he had a plan, and the plan had a deadline.

Six more weeks.

Six more weeks and he'd have enough saved for the ring.

Not some cheap thing either. May deserved better than cheap. She'd been patient with him for three years — through the two jobs that became three jobs, through the missed dinners, through the nights he came home smelling like fryer oil from the restaurant shift and collapsed into bed still in his uniform. She never once complained. Not really. Damien told himself that counted for something.

He dropped off the deli order, caught a five-star rating notification, and checked the time. 4:47 PM. Just enough time to grab something to eat before his shift at Lorenzo's started at 5:30.

By 5:29 he was clocking in, tying his apron, and stepping into the noise of the dinner rush.

---

Lorenzo's was a mid-tier Italian place that pretended to be upscale with dim lighting and cloth napkins, but the kitchen ran exactly like every other restaurant Damien had worked in — too few hands, too many tickets, and a manager who treated the word "break" like a personal insult. Damien didn't mind the pace. He minded the way certain coworkers cut corners and let him deal with the fallout.

Tonight, it was the register.

"Hey, can you help me close out table nine?" asked Wendell, one of the newer servers, sliding a tablet toward Damien without waiting for an answer. "Tablet acting weird on my end."

Damien wiped his hands on his apron and took the tablet. He'd covered for Wendell before. He didn't love it, but he was good with the software — better than most of the actual servers — and it took two minutes out of his night to save someone else twenty.

He tapped through the closeout screen, entered the tip adjustment, and processed the payment.

Nothing unusual. Nothing that should have mattered.

He didn't think about it again for the rest of the shift.

---

By 10:15 PM, Damien was on his bike again, pedaling toward the industrial park on the east side of the city where he pulled security shifts three nights a week for a logistics warehouse. The pay wasn't great, but the job was quiet — mostly walking the perimeter, checking badge scans, and staying awake through hours where nothing happened. Which was fine. Nothing happening was the whole point of security work.

He badged in at the gate, nodded to Ferris, the guard he was relieving, and settled into the folding chair behind the front desk.

That was when his phone buzzed.

A bank notification.

Damien almost ignored it — he got these constantly, little balance updates from an app he'd set to notify him for every transaction over five dollars, a habit from when every dollar mattered enough to track. He'd built the habit because he needed to know, always, exactly how close he was to the number he needed for the ring.

He glanced at the lock screen anyway.

And then he sat up straight.

*Deposit received: $2,847,600.00*

He blinked. Read it again. The number didn't change.

His first thought was that it was a scam text — one of those phishing notifications designed to look official. He unlocked his phone with shaking hands and opened the actual banking app, not the notification, bypassing whatever link might be hiding in it.

The app loaded.

His account balance sat there in cold, undeniable numbers.

$2,851,312.47**

Damien's mouth went dry “God”. He stared at the screen so long that the display dimmed and he had to tap it awake again, just to confirm the number was still real, still there, still his.

He didn't understand it. He hadn't applied for a loan. He hadn't won anything. He hadn't sold anything worth more than a used bicycle in the last five years. There was no invoice, no transfer note, no name attached to the deposit that meant anything to him.

Just a number. A number so large it didn't feel like it belonged in his life at all.

For one dizzy, disorienting second, Damien let himself imagine it. The ring. The small business he'd always talked about and never had the capital for. May's face when he finally told her she didn't have to worry about money anymore.

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number. Local area code.

Damien answered on instinct. "Hello?"

"Damien Veil?" The voice was clipped, formal, and immediately wrong in a way he couldn't name yet.

"Yeah, this is Damien."

"This is Detective Marsh with the city police financial crimes division. We need you to come in first thing tomorrow morning. Do not attempt to move, transfer, or spend any funds currently in your account. Do you understand?"

Damien's stomach dropped somewhere below the folding chair he was sitting in.

"I—what? Why would I—what is this about?"

The detective's voice didn't soften at all. "You'll be informed in the morning. 8 AM. Don't be late, Mr. Veil."

The line went dead.

Damien sat there in the empty warehouse lobby, phone still pressed to his ear long after the call had ended, staring at a bank balance that had just gone from a dream to a nightmare in the space of one phone call.

Millions of dollars had appeared in his account.

And somehow, he already knew — with the kind of certainty that settles into your bones before your brain catches up — that none of it was going to end well.
