Chapter 41: Combat Engineering and the Syllabus of Progress

Deep within the jagged spine of the eastern mountains, a new kind of war was being fought. It was not only a war of flesh against steel, but a war of speed — a contest to see who could build faster than the other side could bleed.

Duke Balmarrat had spent three days pushing the fleeing Dwarven survivors back into their own territory, driving them mile by mile until his forces finally came to rest at a narrow bottleneck the maps called "The Anvil." It was a slender defile, barely wide enough for ten men to stand shoulder to shoulder, flanked on both sides by cliffs so sheer that not even a mountain goat would have attempted them.

It was, in other words, the perfect place to end a war.

"Reload the tripods! Sweep the right flank!" Vane bellowed, his voice barely carrying over the mechanical clatter of the heavy crossbows as their gravity-fed magazines cycled round after round.

Fifty yards down the pass, a last, desperate wave of Dwarven heavy infantry surged forward, trying to break through the gorge before the noose closed completely. The Vanguard operatives did not so much as flinch. They simply braced, cranked their firing levers, and let the tripod-mounted crossbows do what they had been built to do. A horizontal storm of armor-piercing bolts tore through the charging line, dropping men into the churned mud before they had covered even half the distance.

But for all its violence, the slaughter was not the real spectacle. The real spectacle was happening just behind the firing line, where something far stranger than a battle was taking shape.

Silas stood atop a hastily lashed wooden scaffold, gray dust caked into every fold of his clothing, shouting orders with the manic energy of a man conducting an orchestra of chaos.

"Lock the rebar into the bedrock!" he roared down into a deep trench cut across the width of the pass. "I want that steel grid cross-hatched every two feet — don't you dare leave gaps! Pour the aggregate!"

Duke Balmarrat stood a short distance away, leaning on the pommel of his notched broadsword, watching with something close to disbelief as a fortress rose out of raw ground in the middle of a battle. The laborers were not stacking stone the way any mason he had ever known would have. Instead, they had erected towering wooden molds that spanned the entire pass, and inside those molds sat a dense lattice of iron bars — bars that Jenoah himself had forged over the past two days without sleep.

Heavy carriages rattled up one after another, part of Jenoah's resupply convoy, each one loaded with sacks of gray powder, mounds of gravel, and barrels of river water. Laborers dumped the ingredients into massive wooden mixing vats, where they were churned into a thick, wet, uniform sludge.

"What in the blazes is that mud, Silas?" the Duke shouted, cupping a hand to his mouth to be heard over another round of crossbow fire.

"Quick-drying reinforced concrete, my Lord!" Silas called back, grinning like a man who hadn't slept in two days and didn't much care. "Lord Inori worked out the chemical ratio for the limestone cement himself! The iron rebar inside gives it tensile strength — that's the ability to resist being pulled apart — while the concrete around it gives compressive strength, so it can bear enormous weight without crumbling. Put the two together and you get something that's strong in every direction at once. Once this cures, my Lord, not even a Dwarven siege ram is going to leave a scratch on it!"

The laborers worked in relentless, practiced rhythm, pouring the wet gray sludge into the molds and watching it swallow the iron grids whole.

"Combat engineering," the Duke murmured to himself, half in awe and half in disbelief. The Kazuha Syndicate did not simply defeat their enemies on the field. They reshaped the very ground the battle had been fought on, permanently, so that the fight would never need to happen there again. By dawn, a solid wall of stone and steel would seal the Anvil forever. The Eastern Province, for all practical purposes, was closed.

Miles away from the mud and concrete of the mountains, Takuya Kazuha was busy laying the intellectual foundation of an entirely different kind of empire.

He stood behind his desk in the Administrative Headquarters, a massive sheet of parchment unrolled across its surface, weighted down at the corners with paperweights and, in one case, an empty inkpot. Julian stood beside him, quill in hand, doing his best to keep up in his role as executive scribe.

"If the people of this world possess unusually strong memory and learning capacity, then we are wasting that gift by handing them pickaxes and nothing else," Takuya said, tapping a stick of charcoal against the desk to punctuate his point. "We are going to centralize their intellect instead of scattering it across quarries and farms. I am establishing the Kazuha Vocational Institute — a four-branch university built to drag this kingdom into the modern age, whether it's ready or not."

Julian's quill scratched furiously across his notes. "Four branches, Takuya? What exactly are you proposing to teach?"

"First," Takuya began, his eyes narrowing with the particular focus he reserved for plans he had already fully worked out in his head, "the School of Administration and Commerce. There we'll teach advanced mathematics, double-entry bookkeeping — a method of recording every transaction twice, once as a debit and once as a credit, so that errors and fraud become almost impossible to hide — along with macroeconomics and organizational management. That branch exists to mass-produce the competent clerks, accountants, and administrators we'll need to run the businesses we're building.

"Second: the School of Blacksmithing and Engineering. That one belongs to Jenoah and Silas. We won't stop at teaching students how to hit hot iron with a hammer. They'll study metallurgy — the science of how metals behave and how to combine them into better alloys — along with composite material science, fluid dynamics, and the practical skills needed to become real engineering builders, the kind who can design a bridge and know it will hold.

"Third: the School of Medicine. Kaguya will design that syllabus himself. We'll train pharmacists to prepare botanical medicines properly, nurses trained in sterilization and triage, clinical researchers, and eventually, if we do this right, fully qualified surgeons.

"Fourth: the School of Chemistry. Inori needs assistants who understand what they're doing well enough not to blow themselves up in the process. They'll learn the periodic table, the underlying logic of chemical reactions, the safe handling of volatile substances, and how to scale a process up from a laboratory bench to an industrial operation without losing control of it."

Julian's quill finally stopped moving. He flexed his cramping hand and stared down at the scale of what he had just written. "Takuya... the sheer volume of information you're asking to teach is staggering. We don't have textbooks for any of this. We don't even have a library to start from."

"We don't," Takuya agreed, and a slow, calculating smile spread across his face. "But you told me your sister Lysandra is arriving soon. And you also told me she has an eidetic memory — that she remembers, in perfect detail, anything she has read or seen even once."

Julian's eyes widened as he understood exactly where this was going. "You want Lysandra to... write the books?"

"Not just write them, Julian. She's going to become the master matrix — the single source every copy is drawn from. Inori, Kaguya, and I will dictate the core principles of each subject, and she will draft and format the master syllabus for all four branches, including the architectural diagrams and the chemical structures, in a form precise enough to be reproduced exactly."

"But she can only write one copy at a time," Julian pointed out, ever the practical one. "If we have hundreds of students, we'll need thousands of books. Even Lysandra can't write that fast, no matter how good her memory is."

"Leave the mass production to Inori and me," Takuya said, already rolling up a blueprint from the corner of his desk. "I need to go see my brother."

Ten minutes later, Takuya strode into Inori's heavily ventilated laboratory, where his brother was hunched over a reinforced iron boiler, chalk in hand, working through calculations for the metal's tensile limit — the maximum stress it could endure before it failed.

"Inori," Takuya announced, unrolling his blueprint across the nearest clear workbench. "The fertilizer project is going to have to wait. I need a printing press."

Inori wiped his grease-blackened hands on a rag and came over, frowning slightly. "A printing press? We don't have monks to copy manuscripts, Takuya, if that's what you're picturing."

"I'm not talking about monks copying anything by hand. I'm talking about automated movable type," Takuya corrected. "I've just put Princess Lysandra in charge of drafting the master textbooks for a new four-branch university. Once she's written them, we need to reproduce her work — not in the hundreds, but in the millions of pages. That means we need high-torque automation behind it."

He tapped the blueprint twice. "The industrial steam engine. I finished the schematics last night."

Inori leaned over the drawing, his eyes tracking rapidly across the arrangement of cylinders, pistons, and pressure-release valves. He let out a low whistle of genuine appreciation. "A double-acting piston engine. You feed high-pressure steam into one side of the cylinder, forcing the piston down, and then you route the steam to push it back the other way. Continuous rotational power, and a strong one at that. It's elegant, Takuya. Genuinely elegant."

"Can you adapt that rotational energy to drive a high-speed printing machine?"

Inori's grin spread slowly, the gears of his mind visibly locking into motion. "Step by step, yes. It's entirely possible." He snatched up a piece of chalk and began sketching rapidly across his slate.

"Step one: the movable type matrix," he said, talking as fast as he was drawing. "We can't carve whole pages into wood blocks — it takes far too long and one mistake ruins the entire page. Instead we cast individual letters, movable type, so they can be arranged and rearranged as needed. But we can't cast them from pure lead, because lead shrinks slightly as it cools, which would leave every letter slightly warped and blurry on the page. So I'll synthesize a specialized alloy — lead, tin, and antimony together. The antimony is the key. It actually expands a little as it cools, which cancels out the shrinkage from the lead and tin, so every letter comes out sharp-edged and perfectly uniform."

He sketched a wide cylindrical drum beneath his notes on the type.

"Step two: the rotary cylinder. Rather than pressing paper against a flat bed of type — which is slow, because you have to lift the press, reposition the paper, and press again for every single sheet — we mount the assembled type onto the surface of a massive iron cylinder instead. Then we connect that cylinder's axle to the steam engine's drive belt, so the whole thing spins continuously under its own power."

He added a pair of smaller rollers pressed against the main cylinder.

"Step three: the ink and feed. As the steam engine keeps that main cylinder turning, a secondary rubber roller rolls continuously against it, laying down an even coat of oil-based ink across the raised type with every rotation. We feed a continuous strip of paper between the inked cylinder and a second, heavier pressure roller, and the two rollers do the rest — pressing the inked letters onto the paper as it passes through."

Inori set down his chalk, practically vibrating with excitement. "Takuya, with a steam-driven rotary press like this, we won't be printing a few pages an hour the way a scribe would. We'll be printing thousands of pages a day. We could print the entire university syllabus in a week. We could print ledgers for every business in the city. We could even print a daily newspaper, if you wanted to control what people were reading about us."

"Build it," Takuya said without hesitation. "Requisition whatever iron and brass you need from the blacksmiths. Don't wait on approval — just take it and tell them I sent you."

Takuya returned to the Administrative Headquarters with his mind already several steps ahead, working through the logistics of an educated workforce. He made his way to the land surveying office, where Silas's chief assistant — a perpetually nervous young man named Corin — sat surrounded by an unruly sea of maps charting every street and lot in Dian City.

"Corin," Takuya said, in the smooth, confident tone he used when he expected no resistance whatsoever. "I need a plot of land zoned. I'm building a university campus — large enough for four separate academic buildings, a central library, and dormitories to house the students."

Corin swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically across the master map as though searching for an escape route printed somewhere on the parchment.

"Lord Takuya," he squeaked, "there is no land left."

Takuya's brow furrowed. "What do you mean, no land? What about the undeveloped plot beside the new General Hospital — three acres, easily enough to start with."

"Ah — well —" Corin's trembling finger landed on the map, on a spot marked with a bold red X that had clearly been drawn with some force. "Master Kaguya came through an hour ago. He's already claimed that entire sector, legally, through a formal requisition."

"For what, exactly?"

"He said he needs it for an additional high-security medical manufacturing block," Corin read haltingly from a requisition form clutched in his other hand. "Something about mass-producing a — a 'vaccine,' and needing complete isolation of the site to prevent an outbreak."

Takuya stared down at the map for a long moment. Then he reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose, feeling the slow, familiar throb of a headache building behind his eyes.

Between the sprawling Market Mall, the ten-story hospital tower, block after block of concrete residential flats, the factory district, and the Vanguard barracks, Dian City had, quite simply, run out of room. They had built themselves into a corner within their own fortified walls.

Takuya let out a long breath and looked past the map, out through the window, tracing the road that wound westward out of the valley toward the sprawling agricultural settlement beyond it.

"Corin," he said at last, his voice dropping into a register that Corin had learned, through hard experience, to be genuinely afraid of. "Bring me the zoning blueprints for Suebic Town."

Corin blinked. "Suebic Town, my Lord? That's — that's just a farming town. It supplies half our food."

"Not for much longer," Takuya said, and the predatory smile that spread across his face left no room for argument. "If we've outgrown our city, then we simply expand the empire to match. Suebic Town is about to undergo some very significant restructuring. By the time we're finished, it won't be Suebic Town anymore. It'll be Suebic University City."
