Deep in the jagged mountain pass between Dian City and the foundries of the Dwarven Territory, the earth was being subjugated.
For countless millennia, the Goliath Gorge had been a place of untamed, indifferent nature. A massive river had carved a deep scar through solid bedrock over thousands of years — a churning torrent of white water that destroyed anything foolish enough to enter its path. It was a geographical nightmare. A natural border that medieval kings had simply accepted as impassable.
The Cynthia Empire did not accept limits. They engineered them out of existence.
The gorge had become a scene of industrial scale that strained the imagination. Tens of thousands of human laborers and dwarven stonemasons moved over the sheer cliff faces like ants across a wound. The air was thick and acrid — curing limestone, pulverized bedrock, and the black exhaust belching from dozens of steam-cranes fighting the mountain wind.
They were constructing an arch-gravity dam. A concrete monolith of staggering proportions, rising slowly from the riverbed to choke off the ancient waterway. Millions of tons of continuous-pour concrete funneled down through iron chutes, forcing the raging river into reinforced subterranean bypass tunnels below.
High above the fatal drop, standing on a suspended iron catwalk that shuddered in the wind, was Cynthia Chief Engineer Inori Kazuha.
Two days have passed since Lyros's execution tribunal.
He looked physically wrecked. The mountain cold whipped at his leather coat, but he barely seemed to feel it. His skin had gone the color of old parchment. Bruised shadows sat beneath his eyes, and his fingers trembled against the railing — not from fear, but from weeks of sustained manic focus and dangerously little sleep.
Since the bombing in Lyros City, Inori had changed in ways that weren't subtle. He hadn't slept more than an hour at a stretch. He barely ate. He watched the concrete pour below him without the wide-eyed enthusiasm he usually brought to his work. He watched it the way a man watches something he needs to be finished.
He was no longer building tools to elevate humanity. He was building a fortress to protect it from itself.
A short distance away, perched on a flattened outcrop of the cliffside, sat the Chief Engineer's canvas drafting tent.
Silas, the lead logistics and heavy machinery engineer, pushed through the thick canvas flap and pulled his goggles up, wiping concrete dust from the lenses. He hadn't planned on being here. Three weeks ago he'd been knee-deep in the Corbian shipyard mega-project — the kind of assignment that didn't let go of you easily — until a relocation order came down from Prime Minister Takuya himself, apparently at Inori's request. Silas hadn't argued. When the Chief Engineer wanted something done faster, you moved.
The interior of the tent was a controlled disaster. Half-assembled mechanical parts, brass pressure valves, and loose gears covered the floor. Hundreds of blueprints covered every inch of the canvas walls, some pinned precisely, others crumpled and re-pinned over older work.
Inori was bent over a large drafting table, dragging a pen across a sheet of vellum.
"Chief." Silas's voice came out tired. The construction noise outside was a constant roar. "Morning logistics report. The dwarven foremen have verified the rebar tensile strength in Sector Four. We're ready for the next three-hundred-ton pour. But—"
"Is the cement mixture off?" Inori didn't look up.
"No. Cement's fine." Silas took a step closer to the desk. "It's the men, my lord. And you. You're pushing the laborers to the point of collapse, and you're not far behind them. We're weeks ahead of schedule. Why the rush? Why are we strangling this river like we're running out of time?"
Inori set the pen down.
He didn't answer right away. Instead he stood and walked to the back of the tent, where a reinforced steel worktable sat covered by a heavy, oil-stained canvas tarp.
"Do you know the fundamental flaw of the lever-action rifle, Silas?"
Silas frowned. "Flaw? It annihilated the Ennalone cavalry before they could get their swords out. That's not what I'd call a flaw."
"It requires a human being to operate it," Inori said. His voice was flat, disturbingly neutral. "A soldier has to aim, pull the lever, chamber the round, pull the trigger. It relies on muscle and nerve. In the scale of what's coming, it's too slow."
He grabbed the corner of the tarp and pulled it off.
Silas's breath stopped.
On the table were finalized blueprints for something that looked like it had been dragged out of a nightmare. A heavy cylindrical barrel jacket. A complex belt-feeding mechanism. A squat iron tripod.
"This is the Water-Cooled Heavy Machine Gun," Inori said, eyes fixed on the schematic. "A lever-action rifle, in the hands of an elite HSD marksman, fires roughly fifteen rounds a minute. This fires six hundred. It generates so much friction doing so that it needs a constant flow of cold water through that outer jacket just to keep the barrel from warping."
Silas stared at the drawing. A cold sweat started at the back of his neck. "Gods, Inori. No army on the continent could stand against something like that."
"To use it at scale, we need millions of brass shell casings," Inori continued, tapping the page. "Manufactured to microscopic tolerances. A single warped casing jams the belt, the gun seizes, and the soldier holding it dies." He finally looked at Silas directly. "Steam power fluctuates. Coal furnace pressure surges and drops. A steam-powered stamping press can't hold the precision I need to mass-produce identical rounds at that volume. I need constant, steady, unwavering power."
He pointed toward the tent flap — toward the gorge beyond it.
"That dam isn't just flood control," Inori said. "Deep inside the concrete base, I've installed copper-wire turbines inside heavy magnetic housings. We're going to harness the river's kinetic energy and generate alternating current. Electricity." He paused. "It will power fully synchronized, automated factory assembly lines. No fluctuation. No variation. Just a continuous, perfect output."
Silas stared at the exhausted young man before him and understood, with a clarity that settled like a stone in his chest, exactly what had happened to him.
Inori wasn't trying to defend the Empire with superior tactics anymore. He was trying to make the cost of attacking it so overwhelming, so structurally unthinkable, that no nation would ever attempt it. He was building deterrence as a monument to grief.
I have to pull him back, Silas thought. Before he works himself into the ground doing it.
The rumble of hooves through mud interrupted the silence outside.
A guarded, armored carriage bearing the crest of the Cynthia Royal House rolled to a stop. The door opened, and Princess Lysandra stepped out into the mud and blowing concrete dust.
She wasn't wearing silk or jewels. She wore thick leather riding clothes, heavy boots, and a wool cloak — the same practical concession to the industrial world she'd made long ago. She crossed the perimeter without slowing, pushed through the tent flap, and stepped inside.
Silas looked up. The relief on his face was immediate and genuine. He recognized her, straightened into a quick bow, then gathered his ledgers and slipped out without a word, pulling the canvas shut behind him.
Lysandra stood in the center of the cluttered tent and looked at Inori.
He was hunched over the drafting table, glasses sliding down his nose, pen moving across a page of electrical calculations. His skin had no color in it. The sight of him made her chest tighten.
She walked over quietly. He didn't look up until she reached across the table and covered his hands with hers — warm, steady — and drew them gently away from the blueprints.
He blinked. Surfaced. "Lysandra? You shouldn't be here, the dust is terrible for your lungs and the catwalk integrity hasn't been—"
"Stop." She stepped closer. She reached up and pressed her palm against his cheek.
He went still. After a moment, he leaned into her hand. Something in him gave just slightly, like a joint held too long under tension.
"You're running yourself into the ground," she said quietly. "You're chasing a ghost, and you're trying to outpace something that doesn't move at the same speed you do."
Inori looked away. His jaw tightened. "I have to finish the electrical grid. Without power, the automated lines don't run. Without the lines, we can't produce the ammunition at scale. Without the ammunition—"
"Time doesn't work the way you want it to right now," Lysandra said. She moved into his line of sight, made him look at her. "It keeps going forward whether we want it to or not. We can't reverse it. We can't go back and change what happened. What we can do is use what we know now to build something better going forward." She held his gaze. "But you can't let what happened to Hughes become the only thing driving you. It can be part of it. It shouldn't be all of it."
Inori said nothing for a long moment.
Then: "He trusted my designs." His voice came out quieter than she expected. Stripped of its usual precision. "He believed the defenses would hold. And they didn't. And he burned." He exhaled shakily. "He burned because I didn't build something terrible enough to stop a king from marching his men across the border."
Lysandra didn't try to talk him out of the grief. She let it sit there between them where it belonged.
She reached into the inner pocket of her coat and pulled out a folded parchment, sealed with the Prime Minister's wax crest, and pressed it into his hands.
"Hughes will always be with us," she said. "He was the best engineer this empire has produced. And Takuya wants to make sure that holds."
Inori looked down at the parchment. He read it slowly.
It was a formal state decree. The Cynthia Empire was establishing a new research and development facility in Suebic City, built into the heart of the Kazuha Vocational School complex.
Its official designation: the Hughes Electrical and Power Laboratory.
Not a plaque. Not a footnote. A permanent institution bearing his name, where future engineers would learn and build and carry his work forward.
The parchment slipped from Inori's fingers.
He folded forward — knees giving, arms going around Lysandra's waist, face pressed against the leather of her coat — and everything he'd been holding back for weeks came out of him at once. Deep, raw, ugly sobs that shook his whole frame.
Lysandra dropped down with him. She wrapped both arms around his shoulders and held on, one hand moving slowly through his hair, while the mountains outside roared with construction noise and the river threw itself against its new walls below.
For the first time in weeks, he wasn't the Chief Engineer. He was just Inori.
She let him stay there as long as he needed.

Next day evening, the sun had dropped behind the jagged peaks and the gorge was deep in shadow.
The engineering crew had complete assembled on the primary observation deck overlooking the dam. Inori stood at the front, visibly calmer — the dark circles hadn't gone anywhere, but the frantic edge in his eyes had. Lysandra stood at his right, her hand resting on his arm. Silas and the senior dwarven foremen waited at his left.
"Open the primary sluice gates," Inori said.
The foremen turned the iron wheels. Deep in the bedrock, the steel gates lifted.
The response was immediate. The earth shook underfoot as millions of gallons of pressurized water drove through the engineered bypass pipes, the roar of it climbing up through the stone and into their boots. The gorge had been patient for ten thousand years. It was not patient now.
But inside the concrete base of the dam, that fury was being redirected. The copper-wire turbines enclosed in their magnetic housings began to spin — slowly at first, then faster, the hum rising through the soles of their feet until it was less a sound and more a sensation.
Inside the drafting tent, a thick rubber cable ran from the subterranean grid up to a small, hand-blown glass bulb sitting on the worktable. Inside the bulb, a thin carbonized bamboo filament waited in an atmosphere of inert gas.
As the turbines hit full speed, the current surged up the line.
The filament glowed dull red. Then orange. Then it burst into a steady, brilliant white — and drove the shadows cleanly out of every corner of the tent.
The dwarven workers crowded the entrance, staring. Several dropped to their knees. Some whispered prayers. To men raised in firelight and torchlight, what they were looking at had no name. The Kazuha brothers had caught the sun and put it in a jar.
Inori looked at the bulb for a long moment. The satisfaction that moved through him was quieter than he expected — not triumphant, just deep and settled. The age of steam was giving way to something else entirely.
Lysandra studied the glow, her expression thoughtful. "It's extraordinary. But — the filament gets that hot without catching fire. How?"
"Fire needs oxygen," Inori said, and his voice had shifted back into the register she knew best — unhurried, precise, pleased to explain. "At first I tried creating a vacuum inside the bulb — evacuate all the air, eliminate the oxygen. The problem is that a vacuum causes the carbon to vaporize too quickly. The filament burned out within hours."
"So what's actually inside the glass?"
"Inert gas. Argon and nitrogen." He pulled up a stool and sat, elbows on the table, looking at the bulb. "Inert gases don't react with the carbon chemically. The filament can glow white-hot indefinitely without actually combusting."
Silas leaned against the tent post. "Where do you get argon and nitrogen from?"
"The air around us," Inori said simply.
Silas stared at him. "You're saying you pull those gases out of the air we're breathing right now."
"I turn the air into a liquid first, then separate it. Different gases boil off at different temperatures. It's fractional distillation — the same principle used in refining oil, just applied to atmosphere instead."
Lysandra straightened. "You turn air into liquid. How cold does it have to be to do that?"
Inori walked to the chalkboard and picked up a piece of chalk. This part, he liked explaining.
"It's colder than anything that occurs naturally on the surface of this planet," he said. "And to get there, we use what's called the Hampson-Linde Cycle." He drew a quick diagram — a series of pipes, a valve, a loop. "Start with a compressor. We pump ambient air up to extreme pressure. Compression generates heat, so that pressurized air comes out hot. We run it through pipes submerged in cold river water to bring the temperature back down."
He tapped a specific junction in the diagram. "Now here's where it gets interesting. We force that cooled, high-pressure air through a very small expansion valve — essentially a pinhole. When pressurized gas expands rapidly into a lower-pressure space, its temperature drops. This is the Joule-Thomson effect. The gas does work against its own intermolecular forces as it spreads out, and it loses heat in the process."
"So the expansion cools it," Lysandra said, following the drawing.
"Correct. But one pass isn't cold enough to liquefy air. So we run the newly chilled gas back around the outside of the incoming pipe — the warm pressurized air coming in gets pre-cooled by the gas coming out. Each cycle, the air arrives at the valve a little colder, expands a little colder, and the temperature steps down further and further. Eventually it gets cold enough to condense into liquid."
He set the chalk down. "From there, we warm the liquid air up very slowly. Each gas boils off at a specific temperature — nitrogen first, then argon. We collect them separately and fill the bulbs."
The tent hummed with electricity. Silas was pressing his fingers to his temple, working through it.
Lysandra wasn't looking at the chalkboard anymore. She was looking at the lightbulb.
Something was forming behind her eyes — the particular expression she got when a problem was resolving into a solution. Inori had learned to recognize it.
"If forcing a pressurized gas through a small valve drops the temperature that far..." she said slowly, "couldn't you contain that process? Put those pipes and that expansion valve inside a sealed, insulated metal box?"
She turned to face him. "Once electricity reaches houses and hospitals, a small compressor could run the same cycle continuously, inside a box. The inside of the box would stay cold."
She paused, making sure he was following her. "We could store meat without rot. We could keep Kaguya's medicines viable for months instead of days." Her voice had dropped slightly, the way it did when she was thinking out loud and something was accelerating. "Inori. We could freeze things. We could stop decay entirely."
Inori didn't move.
The chalk was still in his hand. He'd forgotten about it.
He had spent every waking hour since Hughes died thinking about electricity as a weapon delivery system — automated lines, perfect ammunition, deterrence through scale. He had sat with the Joule-Thomson equations for months, thinking about compressors and filaments and copper wiring.
And Lysandra had listened to the same principles for ten minutes, and built a refrigerator.
Not a machine of war. A machine for keeping food safe, for extending the life of medicine, for solving one of the oldest and most persistent problems in human civilization — that things rot, and rot kills people.
The chalk slipped out of his fingers. He heard it hit the floor. He didn't pick it up.
He looked at her — this woman who had come out to a construction site in the mud to hold him while he fell apart, and who had then, almost as an afterthought, invented something that would reshape domestic life across the entire continent.
For the first time since Lyros, something in his chest loosened completely. Not the guarded, effortful calm he'd been managing, but something genuine — warm and light and real.
He crossed the tent, took both her hands, and smiled at her.
Not the brief, mechanical acknowledgment he'd been operating on for weeks. A real one. The kind that reached his eyes.
"Yes," he said softly. "We absolutely can."
