It was past two in the morning. The lab smelled of ozone, machine grease, and the particular nervous energy that five exhausted teenagers produce when they refuse to admit they're tired.
On the central workbench sat Inori's prototype Alternator — a heavy iron shaft wound in thick coils of pure copper wire, flanked by raw chunks of Bergran lodestone. It looked like something between a scientific instrument and a siege weapon. Nobody had slept in roughly twenty hours.
"Open the primary valve, Jack!" Gina shouted over the hiss of the pressurized water tank. Her lab coat was soaked through. Her safety goggles had long since migrated up into her hair.
At the far end of the table, Jack hauled down on the heavy brass lever. A concentrated jet of water burst from the narrow iron pipe — their makeshift penstock — and blasted straight into the flat wooden paddles of the waterwheel.
The result was immediate and deeply unsatisfying.
Water erupted in every direction. The paddles caught maybe a quarter of the force, and the Alternator turned with a slow, congested groan, like a cart wheel stuck in mud.
At the other end of the table, Tirania held two bare copper wires millimeters apart. A weak orange spark coughed between them — dim, inconsistent, nothing like what they needed.
"Shut it down!" Raul yelled, throwing up an arm against the spray. "We're hemorrhaging momentum!"
Jack slammed the valve shut. The wheel groaned down to silence. The five of them slumped against the wet tables in varying states of defeat.
"Lord Inori spun the lodestone by hand and got a stronger current," Marshlom muttered, dragging a sleeve across his face. "The water is hitting the paddles, but instead of transferring its force, it's just... scattering. Wrong geometry."
"Exactly." Gina was already moving toward the blackboard, chalk in hand, the failure automatically converting itself into a mathematics problem inside her head.
"Think about a river," she began, sketching quickly. "Moving water has energy, but it doesn't have enough concentrated pressure to drive an iron dynamo at useful speed. Speed needs gravity. So you build a dam — you wall the river off, force the water level to climb. The water above the dam carries massive potential energy. Then you cut a sloped pipe from the crest down to the base." She tapped the diagram. "By the time water exits the bottom of that pipe, gravity has converted all that stored height into pure, screaming pressure."
"We understand dams," Raul said, not unkindly. "Our pressurized tank is already simulating that drop. The pipe isn't the problem."
"Because the wheel is the problem." Gina erased her rough paddle sketch. In its place she drew a small, strange shape — a bucket, but with a sharp wedge running down its center, splitting it into two cupped halves. "When water hits a flat surface, it surrenders its velocity and fans out sideways at a right angle. Every bit of that deflected water is wasted energy."
She tapped the new design.
"Now — what if the bucket catches the jet and bends it? Not sideways. Backward. A center splitter divides the stream cleanly, and the curved walls guide each half through a full one-hundred-and-eighty-degree U-turn. The water doesn't splash. It folds back on itself and drops away with almost no remaining velocity."
Tirania's breath caught. "Which means the wheel absorbed it."
"All of it," Jack said, sitting up straighter. The mechanical logic was lighting up behind his eyes. "Instead of energy flying off the sides, it transfers completely into rotation. The wheel doesn't fight the water — it drinks it."
"Jack," Raul said, already standing, his exhaustion somewhere behind him now. "Fire up the forge. We're casting brass."
For the next two hours, the five of them moved the way a well-drilled team does — not gracefully, but without wasted motion. They melted scrap brass, packed sand molds around Gina's exact curves, and poured a compact turbine wheel studded with double-cupped buckets. While the metal cooled, they drank cold tea and argued quietly about propeller theory. When it was solid, they bolted it to the Alternator's shaft.
Marshlom studied the finished setup with the expression of someone who is professionally required to find the next problem. "Alright. Assume the wheel works perfectly. The Alternator runs at high RPM. Then what? A spark jumping an air gap proves voltage. It doesn't prove sustained output — the kind you could actually power something with."
Tirania chewed her lip, looking around the lab. "Lord Inori kept talking about banishing the night. About driving current through a thin metal thread until it glows. But push high voltage through an iron wire and it just melts."
"So we need something with high resistance and a high melting point," Gina said.
"Carbon." Raul said it without hesitation. "Take a bamboo thread, pack it in a sealed kiln with no airflow, and bake it. The heat drives out everything except the carbon. What's left is practically pure fiber — resistant enough to fight the current, tough enough to glow."
Marshlom made a small, pained sound. "Raul. If you heat carbon to several thousand degrees with oxygen in the room, it doesn't glow. It burns. You'd have ash before the filament even reached temperature."
The room went quiet. He was right.
"Then we take the oxygen away," Tirania said quietly.
Her eyes had landed on the thick, bell-shaped glass beaker on the chemical shelf.
They scrambled. Raul packed the bamboo sliver into the kiln and baked it to black carbon fiber — fragile as a dried leaf, dark as charcoal. Jack mounted it carefully between the two copper wires. Tirania lowered the heavy glass beaker over the whole assembly, pressing its rim into a thick ring of unvulcanized rubber paste to create a seal.
"Hand pump," Jack said. He threaded a thin brass needle through the rubber, connecting it to the distillation vacuum pump. Marshlom cranked it for ten straight minutes, his jaw set, pulling the atmosphere out of the glass chamber in slow, patient stages. When the needle came out, the rubber pinched shut without a sound.
"A vacuum-sealed glass chamber," Gina breathed, staring at it. "A captive star."
Raul reached for the valve.
The heavy iron doors swung open.
Princess Lysandra stood in the doorway in a simple evening gown, wearing the particular look of someone who has caught exactly the misbehavior she expected. Beside her, sitting in his wheeled chair, was Lucian Sterling — pale, clearly exhausted, and vibrating with the contained energy of someone whose brain had refused to let his body sleep.
"I told the young Lord that Viscount Inori's laboratory was off-limits at this hour," Lysandra said, stepping inside. "He disagreed. And it seems I've caught my five best students in the middle of disagreeing too."
"Your Highness." Raul straightened.
"We weren't breaking rules," Gina said, with the conviction of someone who has already rehearsed this argument. She gestured broadly at the setup. "We were solving Lord Inori's fluid dynamics problem."
Lucian wheeled himself closer, and his attention sharpened immediately. He catalogued the pressurized tank, the brass turbine, the magnetic coils, the strange sealed glass at the end of the copper leads — and something in his posture changed.
"What is that?" he asked, his voice dropping.
"We're about to find out," Raul said. He looked at Lysandra. The Princess gave a single nod.
"Jack," Raul said quietly. "Open the valve."
The jet hit the splitter.
The water divided cleanly, curved backward through the cupped buckets, and fell away into the drainage basin in two limp streams — emptied of force, meek as rainwater. The turbine absorbed every bit of it.
It didn't groan. It screamed.
The brass wheel accelerated through sluggish and fast and blinding in roughly two seconds, becoming a solid disc of gold spinning so hard it generated its own high whine. The Alternator's iron shaft spun with it. Magnetic fields alternated in furious succession, slamming a sustained surge of current into the copper coils.
The current hit the carbonized bamboo filament inside the sealed glass.
Without oxygen, it could not burn.
It simply grew hot. Then hotter.
Then it turned into a small, absolute sun.
The light that came out of the glass was not a flicker, not a spark, not the orange stutter of a struggling arc. It was a steady, overwhelming yellow glow that swept every shadow out of the laboratory and replaced them with warm, honest illumination — steady as a held breath.
No one spoke for a moment.
Lysandra covered her mouth, her eidetic mind working through implications she hadn't finished absorbing yet. The thought that arrived — slowly, like a ship coming into harbor — was not they made a light. It was they conquered the night.
Lucian Sterling stared at the glowing bulb. His heart was hitting his ribs so hard he could hear it.
Then his mind made a connection, and he yanked a heavy iron model from his lap and slammed it onto the table beside the light.
"Look at this," he said, his voice cracking with urgency. He pointed to the small brass propeller at the model's stern. "I've been driving it with a clockwork spring, but a spring loses tension — it bleeds speed every second it runs. If falling water can spin a turbine to produce this invisible energy—" he gestured at the glowing bulb "—then a Kazuha steam engine could drive your Alternator. You run wires to a motor on the propeller shaft. Electric ships. Iron hulls powered entirely by current!"
The five prodigies looked at the iron boat. Then at each other.
Raul let out a breath — not dismissive, but careful. "Lucian... you're a few steps behind."
Lucian froze.
"Electricity is powerful," Raul said, choosing his words, "but it still needs massive coils and heavy equipment to do real work at scale. Lord Inori and Count Takuya are already building something further along than that." He paused. "A sixteen-cylinder, two-stroke internal combustion engine."
Lucian repeated the words slowly. "Internal combustion."
"No steam. No electricity as the primary mover," Jack added. "Liquid gasoline, refined from crude oil. Injected directly into steel cylinders and detonated with an electrical spark — like the one we made tonight. The explosive force drives the pistons. We're talking thousands of horsepower per engine. Lord Inori is waiting on the refinery to finalize the fuel."
The light went out of Lucian's eyes.
He looked down at his model. The spring-wound propeller. The toy boat. He'd thought he was ahead of it — thought he'd seen something no one else had yet. Instead, Inori Kazuha was already designing engines that fed on controlled explosions, and Lucian Sterling was sitting in a wheeled chair showing people a piece of iron with a spring in it.
"I'm useless," he said, very quietly. His hands were still on the model. "I'm a boy with a toy."
"Hey." Raul moved around the table and dropped to one knee so they were at the same level. "Look at me."
Lucian looked up.
"Inori knows how to explode oil," Raul said, his voice level. "He can build an engine that produces more force than anything this world has seen. But do you know what he cannot do?"
Lucian shook his head slowly.
"He doesn't know a thing about what water does to a hull moving at speed," Raul said. "He doesn't know volumetric displacement. He doesn't know the buoyancy ceiling of heavy-gauge steel, or how an iron hull behaves when an ocean swell hits it at the wrong angle. If Inori drops that engine into a ship today, the ship sinks before it clears the harbor."
Raul tapped the side of the iron model.
"He has the heart," Raul said. "What he doesn't have is the body to carry it. And we've been waiting — all of us — for someone who understands how water fights back. Someone who can build the hull that makes the engine matter." He held Lucian's gaze. "We've been waiting for a naval architect."
The despair drained away. What replaced it wasn't pride, exactly — it was something more focused than that. A specific fire.
"I can build the hull," Lucian said. The certainty in his voice was quiet but absolute. "I'll build you a Leviathan."

Countess Emara Sterling moved through the commercial district at a measured pace, taking in the ordered streets with the particular attention of someone who has spent decades running an estate and knows instantly when a system is better than the one she grew up with. Takuya's zoning reforms had concentrated all trade into designated districts, and the result was something she could only describe as sensible. The stalls were clean. The flows of foot traffic made sense.
She stopped in front of a textile shop.
The owner — balding, in his middle years, with the particular look of a man who has received an unexpected shipment and hasn't decided how to feel about it — was standing outside, staring at enormous wooden spools of fabric the color of fresh snow.
Emara stepped in.
"Good morning," she said. "What is this material?"
The merchant rubbed his temples. "Honestly, My Lady, I'm still working that out myself. Count Kazuha and Lord Inori mandated I take this stock. They've built automated steam-looms in the eastern sector — machines that spin and weave faster than an entire hall of weavers. This is the cotton plant. The shelves in the back hold linen, from flax. Lord Inori's people say it's almost nothing to produce now."
He unrolled a length of the white fabric across the counter.
Emara reached out and touched it.
Her hand stilled.
The people of Oros — nobility included — wore wool that scratched, leather that stiffened, or silk so delicate it cost a small fortune to import from the southern coast. This cotton was something else entirely. Soft without being fragile. Breathable. Uniform in a way hand-woven cloth never was. She ran a few inches of it between her fingers, and thirty years of managing the Sterling household's wardrobe quietly reorganized themselves in her mind.
"You don't know what to do with this?" she asked.
The merchant spread his hands. "Who buys it? Factory workers need tough leather. Nobles want heavy velvet — something that signals wealth. This is too light. Too thin. It's charming, but I can't see the market for it."
"Give me a quill," Emara said.
He handed her one, a bit startled. She leaned over the counter and wrote — not words, but shapes. A men's shirt with a clean collar and simple buttons at the front. A woman's summer dress, loose and long. A pair of trousers cut for movement, not ceremony.
"The workers wear leather because they have never been offered an alternative," Emara said, not looking up. "Stand in a factory all day in June heat and you understand quickly. If you give them something this soft — this light — that washes easily and holds its shape? They will fill your shop."
The merchant studied the sketches. Something shifted in his expression.
"And here." Emara tapped the dress design. "If this fabric is as cheap to produce as you say, we don't sell the raw cloth at all. We sell the finished garment. Pre-sewn. Standardized by size."
"Standardized—?" The merchant looked genuinely thrown. "My Lady, every shirt has to be measured to the man who'll wear it. That's how it works."
"That's how it worked." Emara straightened. She reached into her coat and placed a heavy pouch on the counter — solid gold coins, the last of the Sterling family's liquid wealth, stacked with the particular finality of someone who has made a decision and isn't revisiting it. She met the merchant's eyes.
"I'm buying your entire stock. Cotton and linen, every spool. And I'll have ten seamstresses here by noon." She smoothed the fabric once more. "The world is changing. I intend to dress it."
The merchant stood very still for a moment. Then he reached for the quill she'd left on the counter.
He would need to write some orders of his own.
Countess Emara Sterling had just laid the foundation for the first fashion and textile empire in the history of Oros — though she wouldn't have called it that. She would have called it obvious.

Thirty-five reinforced steam-carriages — groaning at every joint, springs pushed to their absolute limit — rolled through the industrial capital under heavy escort from a double column of Vanguard Riflemen. The cargo that strained those carriages was thousands of tons of dark, jagged Bergran lodestone, and the sound of their progress through the paved streets was felt as much as heard.
Viscount Inori Kazuha stepped from the lead carriage and stretched, pressing both fists into the small of his back. Commander Vane dropped down beside him without ceremony, rifle on his shoulder, the Bergran expedition written in the dust on both of them.
Hameel was already waiting, ledger open. "Lord Inori. Thirty-five carriages, as you requested. Where do you want it unloaded? The laboratory can't hold a fraction of this weight."
Inori didn't answer. He walked past the carriages, past Hameel, past the Vanguard perimeter, until his boots hit the edge of the promenade that ran along the Dian River. He stopped there.
The river ran wide and fast through its banks, dark with the velocity of deep water, indifferent to everything Dian City had built around it.
Inori looked at the lodestone. Then he looked at the river.
The smile that spread across his face was the smile of a man who has spent weeks carrying a secret that is finally too large to contain.
"We're not taking it to the lab," he said.
Hameel looked up from his ledger. "Then where, My Lord?"
Inori pointed at the center of the river.
"We're going to choke it," he said. The roar of the current nearly swallowed his voice, but not quite. "A concrete wall, a hundred feet high, straight across the water. Iron pipes from the crest to the base. The river won't flow around us — it will flow through us, through turbines the size of houses, wrapped in enough magnetic coil to power a continent."
He turned back toward the city — and in the distance, through the haze and the dark, a single steady yellow light was glowing in the window of the research laboratory. One small impossible star.
"Unload the rock, Hameel," Inori said, turning back to the river.
"We're building a dam."
