Chapter 1: The Dead Don't Stay Dead

The last thing he remembered was the blade.

Not the pain. Not the blood. Just the steel sliding between his ribs like a key turning in a lock — deliberate, practiced, final.

And a face.

A face that smiled.

Then nothing.

No light. No tunnel. No chorus of angels or burning pits of damnation. Just an endless, suffocating darkness that pressed against him from every direction, cold and absolute, as if the universe had swallowed him whole and forgotten to chew.

He floated there — or stood, or lay, or whatever the dead did when there was no ground and no sky — for what could have been seconds or centuries. Time didn't move here. It didn't exist. Only the dark, and the fading echo of that smile.

Then a sound.

A chime. Soft. Digital. Wrong.

[ INITIALIZING… ]

The words appeared in the void — not spoken, not written, just there, burning white against the black like a wound in reality itself.

[ HOST STATUS: DECEASED ]

[ SOUL INTEGRITY: 0.04% ]

[ PHYSICAL FORM: NONE ]

[ SYSTEM BOOT… FAILED ]

Failed.

The word flickered red, then vanished.

He tried to reach for it — whatever "it" was — but he had no hands. No arms. No body at all. Just awareness, raw and sharp, trapped in a space that shouldn't exist.

Another chime.

[ RETRYING… ]

[ SYSTEM BOOT… PARTIAL SUCCESS ]

[ WELCOME, GHOST. ]

His name. Not his name — he didn't have one anymore, didn't remember it — but a title. A classification. Something the System had stamped onto what was left of him like a barcode on a corpse.

[ You have been selected as an unauthorized host. ]

[ Soul integrity is critically low. Physical reconstruction is not possible at this time. ]

[ Alternative functionality enabled: POSSESSION ]

Possession.

The word sat there, pulsing faintly. He didn't know what it meant — not fully — but something deep inside him, something older than memory, recognized it. Lunged toward it. Like a drowning man reaching for air.

[ SYSTEM OFFER: Possess the bodies of the recently deceased. ]

[ Each possession grants: STATS, SKILLS, MEMORIES. ]

[ Objective: LEVEL UP. ]

[ Reward: Recover what was taken from you. ]

What was taken from him.

He didn't know what that was. Didn't know who he had been, what he had built, who had smiled while killing him. But the System did. And it was offering him a way back — piece by piece, body by body, level by level.

Another line appeared.

[ WARNING: Soul integrity at 0.04%. Extended exposure without a host will result in permanent dissolution. ]

[ TIME REMAINING: 2 HOURS 14 MINUTES ]

Two hours.

Two hours before he stopped existing entirely. Before the darkness won and that smiling face got away with whatever it had done.

No.

The word wasn't spoken. It was felt — a detonation in the core of whatever he was now. A refusal so absolute it shook the void around him.

No.

He was not going to dissolve. He was not going to disappear. Someone had killed him and he was going to find out who, and he was going to make them pay — not with a blade between the ribs, not quickly, not kindly, but slowly. Publicly. Unforgettably.

[ Detecting nearby corpses… ]

[ 1 MATCH FOUND ]

[ CORPSE ID: 4491 — Male, 24, cause of death: exsanguination ]

[ POSSESSION COST: 0.02% soul integrity ]

[ PROCEED? Y/N ]

He didn't hesitate.

Y.

The void cracked open.

Light flooded in — harsh, ugly, fluorescent. The smell hit first: copper and antiseptic and something rotten underneath. Then sound: a flat, continuous beep. A heart monitor with nothing left to monitor.

He was looking down at a body on a metal table. Young. Pale. Eyes half-open, staring at nothing. A wound across the throat, clean and deep. The sheets around it were stained dark red, almost brown now.

A morgue.

He was standing in a morgue — or floating, hovering just above the tile floor, his form flickering like a bad signal on a dying screen. He could see his own hands — translucent, faintly luminous, barely there at all.

The corpse on the table didn't move. Of course it didn't. It was dead.

But it was about to not be.

[ POSSESSION IN PROGRESS… ]

Something pulled him forward — not gently, not slowly, but like being shoved through a keyhole. Every nerve he didn't have screamed. The world went white, then black, then a color he couldn't name.

Then he breathed.

Air. Real air. Filling real lungs. His chest rose — stiff, aching, wrong — and he gagged, coughing, tasting blood and formaldehyde.

He sat up.

The sheet fell from his chest. His hands — new hands, someone else's hands — were shaking. He looked down at them: thin, scarred across the knuckles, the nails bitten short.

Not his hands. But his now.

A gasp from the doorway.

A woman in a white coat stood frozen, clipboard in hand, face the color of paper. Her mouth opened. No sound came out.

He looked at her.

He tried to speak — to say something, anything — but his throat was raw and the words came out broken, barely a whisper.

"Don't… scream."

She screamed.

[ POSSESSION COMPLETE ]

[ HOST ACQUIRED: Corpse #4491 ]

[ STATS UNLOCKED ]

[ LEVEL: 1 ]

[ You are alive. Barely. ]
