Chapter 3: The Master of Nothing

8 min read•Published Oct 13, 2026

Hanzo’s first instinct was to check the ground for a dropped contact lens. Nobody bowed in this part of the city unless they were trying to avoid a drive-by or had recently discovered their shoelaces were untied. But as Elara stayed down, her expensive chestnut hair brushing against a discarded, grease-stained pizza box, the reality of the situation hit him like a wet sock.

She wasn't looking for a lens. She was looking at him like he was a bearded deity who had just descended from a mountain of discarded tires.

"Master?" Hanzo squeaked, his voice cracking like a puberty-stricken teenager. He clutched his bag of actual, literal rotting garbage tighter. "Lady, I think you’ve got the wrong guy. I don’t even have a Master’s degree. I barely have a high school diploma. I’m just... I'm just looking for aluminum, okay?"

Elara remained in her deep bow, her voice muffled by the pavement but vibrating with a terrifying level of intensity. "The Rolex. You cast it aside. Most men would kill for such a treasure, yet you treated it like a common stone. You have achieved the state of 'Anatta'—the non-self. You are the Void made flesh."

Hanzo looked down at his sticky, grime-covered hands. He didn't feel like the Void. He felt like a guy who really, really wanted a cheeseburger but was currently being stalked by a System that treated his bank account like a game of Minesweeper.

Ding!

[NEW INTERACTION DETECTED: THE SEEKER'S OBSESSION]

[CURRENT STATUS: ACCIDENTAL SAGE]

[MISSION: Do not reveal the existence of the Supreme Poverty System. If the target believes you are a spiritual master, your 'Scavenging Luck' will increase by 15%. Reward for successful deception: $250,000.]

Hanzo’s eyes nearly popped out of his skull. A quarter of a million dollars just to keep his mouth shut and act weird? He had been acting weird for free his entire life. This was his time to shine.

"Ah, yes," Hanzo said, suddenly straightening his spine and trying to look profound while a piece of wet cabbage slid off his shoulder. "The watch. Time is... uh... just a circle that hurts your wrist. Very heavy. Very shiny. No thank you."

Elara finally looked up, her eyes shining with tears of genuine realization. "Incredible. 'A circle that hurts your wrist.' Such a succinct deconstruction of the temporal shackles of the bourgeoisie!"

Before Hanzo could accidentally say something even stupider, a shadow loomed over both of them. It was a man built like a brick outhouse, wearing a tactical suit that probably cost more than Hanzo’s entire family tree. He had "Professional Bodyguard" written all over his face, mostly because his expression was set in a permanent scowl of high-grade suspicion.

"Miss Pax," the man said, his hand hovering near the holster under his arm. "Step away from the vagrant. Now."

"Faelwyn, stop!" Elara snapped, standing up and dusting off her knees, though she didn't take her eyes off Hanzo. "He isn't a 'vagrant.' He is a renunciant. I watched him throw away a Submariner like it was a candy wrapper. Do you have any idea what kind of spiritual discipline that requires?"

Faelwyn Pax didn't look impressed. He looked like he wanted to perform a "spiritual discipline" involving Hanzo’s face and the brick wall. He stepped closer, the smell of expensive cologne and gun oil clashing violently with the aroma of the alleyway. "Miss, your father hired me to protect you from scammers, not to watch you worship a man who smells like a fermented dumpster."

"I don't smell like a dumpster," Hanzo protested weakly, then checked himself as the System’s 'Presence of the Void' buff suddenly kicked in.

[BUFF ACTIVATED: PRESENCE OF THE VOID]

[EFFECT: Social anxiety is converted into 'Unshakeable Serenity.' Silence is perceived as 'Infinite Wisdom.']

Suddenly, Hanzo’s panic vanished. It didn't feel like peace; it felt like his brain had been replaced by a block of very calm ice. He found himself staring directly into Faelwyn’s eyes, not out of bravery, but because he had forgotten how to blink. He stood perfectly still, his breathing slowing to a rhythmic, meditative crawl.

To Faelwyn, this was terrifying. Usually, when he threatened a bum, they either ran, begged, or started swinging. This guy just... existed. He was looking through Faelwyn as if the bodyguard were made of glass.

"See?" Elara whispered, her voice trembling with excitement. "He doesn't even fear your aggression, Faelwyn. He is beyond the cycle of violence."

In reality, Hanzo was just trying to remember if he’d left his stove on in the apartment he’d been evicted from three hours ago.

"Master," Elara said, stepping toward him again. "I cannot leave you here in the mud. My family owns a... well, it’s a residence. It is quiet. It is away from the noise of the world. Please, allow me to provide you with a space to continue your meditations."

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION!]

[THE BEGGAR'S PALACE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]

[CONDITION: You may accept the invitation. You will reside in luxury, provided you own nothing within the walls. All items must be 'borrowed.' Any attempt to claim ownership will result in a 100% wealth reset.]

Hanzo blinked. He could live in a mansion as long as he acted like a permanent houseguest who forgot his wallet? That was basically his dream life.

"I have no need for palaces," Hanzo said, his voice sounding oddly resonant thanks to the System’s modulation. "But if you have a place where the cans are plentiful and the Wi-Fi is... I mean, where the spirit can roam free, I shall consider it."

Elara clapped her hands together like a schoolgirl. "Yes! Please! Faelwyn, open the door for the Master."

Faelwyn looked like he was about to have a stroke. He stepped between Hanzo and the limo, his jaw muscles rippling. "Miss, I can't let a biohazard into the back of a Maybach. If he’s a 'master,' then he should have no problem passing a simple test of spirit."

Hanzo’s icy calm wavered. "Test? I’m not really a big fan of tests. I usually get a C-minus at best."

Faelwyn didn't listen. He reached out, his hand moving with the practiced speed of a combat veteran, aiming to grab Hanzo’s shoulder. It wasn't a punch, but it was a challenge—a physical probe to see if this 'sage' was just a bag of hot air or something more dangerous.

"Show me your 'Void,' old man," Faelwyn growled.

Hanzo’s foot slipped on a patch of banana peel and discarded motor oil at that exact moment. As his center of gravity vanished, his body did something he didn't authorize.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: DRUNKEN SCAVENGER'S REFLEXES (RANK E)]

His body lurched sideways in a way that defied the laws of skeletal integrity. Faelwyn’s hand swiped through empty air, the momentum of his own force carrying him forward. Hanzo, in a desperate attempt to stay upright, flailed his arms. His heavy bag of garbage full of half-empty soda cans and heavy organic waste—swung in a perfect, accidental arc.

THWACK!!!

The bag caught Faelwyn right in the side of the head. It wasn't a lethal blow, but the sheer weight of three gallons of spoiled milk and a discarded dictionary was enough to send the professional bodyguard stumbling into a stack of empty crates.

The crates collapsed. A cloud of dust and old newspapers erupted into the air.

Silence descended on the alley.

Elara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "Aiki... he didn't even touch him. He used Faelwyn’s own aggression against him with a bag of discarded illusions!"

Hanzo stood there, swaying slightly, clutching his garbage bag like a teddy bear. His heart was hammering against his ribs so hard he thought it might break a bone. He hadn't meant to hit the guy, he’d just been trying not to fall into a puddle of mystery liquid.

Faelwyn pushed himself up from the crates, his face turning a shade of purple that Hanzo didn't know humans could achieve. He wasn't hurt, but his pride was currently being digested by the alleyway. He went for his holster, his eyes wild with professional humiliation.

"That's enough!" Elara shouted, stepping in front of Hanzo with her arms spread wide. "He has proven himself, Faelwyn! You attacked, and he corrected your path. If you draw that weapon, I will have you fired before the safety is off!"

Faelwyn froze. He glared at Hanzo, who was currently staring at a particularly interesting piece of gravel.

"This isn't over," Faelwyn hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "I don't know what kind of freak you are, but I’m going to find out. Nobody 'accidents' their way through a Pax-level defensive sweep."

Hanzo swallowed hard. He wanted to tell the guy that 'accidenting' his way through life was his primary personality trait, but the 'Presence of the Void' buff forced him to remain silent. He simply nodded once a slow, ponderous movement that looked like he was acknowledging a worthy but misguided opponent.

"Master," Elara said, turning back to him, her eyes burning with an even brighter flame of devotion. "The car is ready. Your palace awaits."

Hanzo looked at the sleek black limo, then at the dumpster, then at his bank account on his phone $1,000,000. He realized that if he got into that car, his life as a normal loser was officially over. He was now a professional loser, and the stakes were getting higher by the second.

As he climbed into the plush leather interior, his tattered coat leaving a streak of grey ash on the cream-colored seats, Faelwyn slammed the driver’s door shut. The bodyguard caught Hanzo’s eye in the rearview mirror, his gaze cold and calculating.

"You think you're a sage?" Faelwyn whispered as he shifted the car into gear. "We’ll see how your 'spirit' holds up when we get to the estate. My old instructor is visiting. He’s spent thirty years looking for a 'Master.' I think he’d love to meet you."

Hanzo’s stomach did a somersault. He had a feeling the 'test of spirit' was about to get a lot more physical.
