The Ancient Vessel

The dark obsidian coffin hung in the center of the disintegrating chamber, suspended by four thick, blood-iron chains that groaned under the immense kinetic vibration of the clockwork core.

As the coffin lid receded completely, a dark, viscous liquid—thick and iridescent like liquid pitch—spilled over the edges, splashing onto the superheated bronze gears below with a sharp, hissing burst of purple vapor.

Inside the coffin lay no corpse.

Positioned horizontally within the dark liquid was a massive, preserved wooden pulse-core. It was carved from the heartwood of an ancient, extinct spirit tree, roots intertwining around a glowing, blackened pearl that flickered with a violent, corrupted dark-green light.

Baihua's spectral form instantly stiffened, her translucent light flaring with a mixture of recognition and severe alarm. "That... that isn't a human artifact! That's the stolen heart-wood of the Sovereign Pine! The apex root of my ancestral lineage!"

Ming Xian narrowed his eyes, wiping a smear of dark blood from his jaw as he regained his balance on the lower iron catwalk. "Song didn't just strip my cultivation core four years ago to feed his own channels. He was building a composite anchor."

"He used your empty meridians as a catalyst to bridge the human body with the Sovereign Pine's heart-wood," Baihua whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "The Righteous Sword Sect didn't destroy your core out of fear or punishment, Ming Xian... They stripped it because your physical body was the only one compatible with receiving the pine's seal!"

High above them, Grand Elder Song let out a shattered, hysterical laugh. His body was now heavily fractured, bright streaks of raw, uncontained Qi bursting out from his chest like rays of blinding light through cracked stone.

"You finally realize it, boy!" Song screamed over the deafening mechanical roar. "You were never meant to be a master of the sword! You were cultivated from the day you entered this sect to be the vessel for the Imperial Sovereign Core! Four years ago, we harvested the vessel. Today, I harvest the fruit!"

Song raised his blood-soaked right gauntlet and slammed it directly into the open coffin.

BOOM!

The four blood-iron chains snapped simultaneously. The blackened pearl within the wooden pulse-core flared with a catastrophic shockwave of dark spiritual energy. The liquid pitch inside the coffin surged outward, forming a towering, spectral avatar—a massive, six-armed wooden titan crowned with dark crimson flames.

The spiritual pressure violently slammed down upon the chamber. The outer stone walls of the Imperial Clock Tower cracked from top to bottom, massive blocks of masonry tumbling down into the streets of Tianzhou below.

"He's attempting to merge his failing soul with the Sovereign titan!" Baihua shouted, her spectral vines extending outward to anchor Ming Xian to the iron catwalk as the floor beneath them buckled. "If he completes the fusion, he will possess an indestructible physical form backed by the city's ley-lines!"

Ming Xian's face remained stone-cold. He didn't look at the towering spectral titan, nor did he look at the screaming Grand Elder.

His sharp eyes locked onto the four severed chain links dangling from the upper roof support beams.

"Song," Ming Xian spoke, his voice cutting through the tempest of roaring energy with deadly calm. "You spent twenty years studying spiritual cores, arrays, and immortal ascendancy."

Ming Xian reached into his inner leather pouch and pulled out three thin, silver-headed iron pitons—tools used by black-market miners to crack stone veins without triggering Qi shocks.

"But you never understood how tension works," Ming Xian added.

He sprinted along the tilting edge of the catwalk.

Instead of jumping toward Song or the wooden titan, Ming Xian hurled himself sideways, landing onto the primary drive belt—a massive, ten-inch-thick braided steel cable that drove the central gear of the entire clockwork mechanism.

The cable was spinning at terrifying speed, dragging Ming Xian directly toward the main compression gear.

"Ming Xian! Are you insane?!" Baihua screamed.

Using the sheer, brutal momentum of the spinning cable, Ming Xian jammed his three iron pitons directly into the teeth of the main counter-weight gear.

CRUNCH!

The iron pitons didn't break the massive gear—they locked it for a fraction of a second.

That single fraction of a second was enough.

The colossal kinetic energy generated by the entire clockwork engine, which had been building pressure for hours, had nowhere to go. The energy instantly backfired along the primary drive shaft, surging straight up into the suspended platform where the obsidian coffin and Song's spectral titan hung.

THUNDER-CRACK!

The massive central shaft shattered into thousands of jagged iron shrapnel pieces.

The sudden loss of tension caused the four blood-iron chains to snap back like high-tension whips, wrapping violently around the six-armed wooden titan and tearing through its spectral torso.

Song's scream of triumph instantly turned into an agonizing shriek of terror as the backfiring kinetic force tore through his fragile, overcharged body.

"NO! THE ARRAY! MY ASCENSION!" Song howled as the dark pitch liquid inside the coffin burst into white-hot flames, consuming the wooden pulse-core from within.

The towering spectral titan collapsed inward, imploding into a sphere of swirling, unstable crimson Qi.

"Now, Baihua!" Ming Xian barked.

Baihua didn't hesitate. She shot forward like an emerald comet, her spectral roots plunging deep into the heart of the imploding sphere. She bypassed the corrupted pitch liquid and wrapped her roots firmly around the blackened pearl—the stolen heart-wood of her ancestral lineage.

"Reclaim what is yours!" Ming Xian ordered, leaping through the cloud of flying iron shrapnel and landing heavily on the dais beside the burning coffin.

Baihua pulled with all her spectral strength.

SNAP!

The blackened pearl was ripped free from the array's mechanism. The dark, corrupted crimson light surrounding it instantly washed away, replaced by a pure, blinding emerald glow that illuminated the entire falling chamber.

With its core removed, the suppression array completely collapsed.

The crimson barrier that had suppressed the entire capital of Tianzhou for decades shattered with the sound of breaking glass. Across the city, thousands of cultivators suddenly felt their blocked meridians reopen, their long-suppressed Qi surging back into their bodies.

Inside the ruined top floor of the tower, Grand Elder Song fell to his knees on the burning bronze floor. His glass-like skin was completely cracked, his spiritual foundation shattered beyond repair. He was now nothing more than a frail, withered old man, bleeding out on the hot iron plates.

Ming Xian walked slowly through the smoke and settling dust, his boots clicking rhythmically against the metal floor.

He stood over Song, his notched hunting knife held loosely at his side.

Song looked up through blood-filled eyes, his breathing a shallow, rattling gasp. "You... coreless worm... You destroyed... the work of a century..."

"I didn't destroy it," Ming Xian said, looking down at the dying elder without a shred of emotion. "You built a castle out of stolen glass and wondered why it shattered when hit with steel."

Song opened his mouth to curse, but Ming Xian's movement was swift and absolute.

A single, clean thrust of the notched blade through the throat.

The Grand Elder's body went limp, his eyes staring blankly at the collapsing ceiling of the Imperial Clock Tower.

Ming Xian withdrew his knife, wiping the steel on Song's torn robes before sheathing it at his hip.

Baihua floated down to his side, the purified emerald pearl now resting comfortably within her glowing spectral chest. Her presence was noticeably stronger, her green light casting long, steady shadows across the ruined hall.

"The tower is falling apart," Baihua said, looking around as massive support beams began to give way. "And the Righteous Sword Sect's main force in the upper city will be here within minutes now that the suppression array is gone."

"Let them come," Ming Xian said, turning toward the open edge of the ruined tower wall, looking out over the vast, sprawling city of Tianzhou under the midnight sky. "The capital is awake now."

He pulled his straw hat lower over his eyes and leaped off the edge of the collapsing tower into the night below.
