The Harbor of Whispers

The low-hanging fog of the Great South River gave way to the looming, jagged silhouette of Tianzhou's Southern Water Gate.

Huge iron grates submerged in the muddy water dictated entry into the capital, guarded by towering stone watchtowers. Massive wooden cranes creaked in the morning dampness, hoisting heavy cargo containers from merchant barges to the crowded docks.

Ming Xian steered the damaged skiff beneath the shadow of a broad-bottomed grain barge, using its heavy hull as cover from the watchtowers above.

"The main water gates are locked down," Baihua noted, her small form hovering closely beside him, her spiritual presence cloaked to a mere whisper. "I count at least forty guards on the ramparts. Every single one is holding a tracking talisman."

"They're looking for boat traffic coming from the Iron Gorge," Ming Xian said low, his dark eyes observing the dockworkers below. "They don't care about the coal barges sinking under their own weight."

With a swift, practiced movement, Ming Xian grabbed a iron cargo hook hanging from the grain barge's stern, anchoring their small skiff against its timber hull. As the large barge glided past the lower pier of the Black Sand District—the capital's notoriously ungoverned harbor—Ming Xian vaulted over the side, landing soundlessly on the wet wooden planks of the pier.

Baihua drifted right behind him, blending effortlessly into the shadows cast by stacks of rotting timber.

The Black Sand District smelled of stale spirits, salt-cured fish, and the faint, bitter metallic tang of underground black markets. It was the only part of Tianzhou where the Righteous Sword Sect held no formal authority—a sprawling maze of alleys controlled by river syndicates and rogue cultivators.

"We need a localized map of the Grand Elder's array points," Ming Xian said, pulling his straw hat low to cover his face as they moved through the crowded harbor market. "The capital is too large to search blindly, and his wards will be heavily hidden behind merchant storefronts."

"And who in this pit of thieves possesses that kind of intelligence without selling us out to the nearest sect scout?" Baihua asked, a mocking smile touching her lips.

"An old contact," Ming Xian replied, stopping in front of a dimly lit storefront tucked beneath a stone archway. A worn wooden sign swayed in the humid breeze, bearing the mark of an upside-down copper coin—The Silver Scales Exchange.

He pushed open the heavy oak door. The sound of a small bronze bell chimed above.

Inside, the air was thick with incense smoke meant to cover the smell of dried spirit herbs. Behind a iron-reinforced counter sat an elderly man with milky, blind eyes, methodically counting silver coins with unnaturally long, ink-stained fingers.

"The shop is closed," the old man said without looking up, his voice dry like rustling parchment. "Come back when the river tide turns."

"I'm not here to buy herbs, Elder Lu," Ming Xian said coldly, stepping closer to the counter. "I'm here to redeem a debt from four years ago."

Elder Lu's fingers froze over the silver coins. His head tilted slowly toward Ming Xian, his milky eyes narrowing despite his blindness. He sniffed the air once, catching the faint scent of rain, steel, and crushed spirit dust.

"The renegade disciple..." Elder Lu whispered, a soft, raspy chuckle escaping his throat. "Word reached the docks three hours ago. The Righteous Sword Sect put a bounty of ten thousand spirit stones on your head. Dead or alive."

"They're overpaying," Ming Xian remarked dryly, resting his hand casually on the hilt of his saber. "I need the blueprint of the city's underground Qi conduits. Specifically, the node feeding into the Grand Elder's manor."

Elder Lu leaned back in his creaking wooden chair, resting his withered hands on the counter.

"Grand Elder Song has sealed the inner district. He's converting the city's ley-lines into a massive suppression field. Anyone channeling unapproved Qi inside the walls will have their meridian network severed within minutes."

"That explains why the Shadow-Fang assassins were so eager to stop us at the river," Baihua chimed in, floating silently into Elder Lu's line of sight.

Elder Lu flinched, feeling the sudden, unnatural drop in room temperature. "A... a high-grade spirit companion? You've been busy, kid."

"The map, Lu," Ming Xian repeated, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "Or I tell the River Syndicate who leaked their smuggling routes to the regional overseer last winter."

The old man's face twitched slightly. He let out a harsh sigh, reaching beneath the counter to pull out a heavy, iron-bound scroll sealed with grey wax. He tossed it onto the wooden counter.

"The main array node isn't at his manor," Elder Lu said in a low whisper. "Song moved it three nights ago. It's beneath the Imperial Clock Tower in the central plaza. He's using the city's bell mechanism to pulse the suppression field across all four districts."

Ming Xian grabbed the scroll, tucking it inside his inner cloak.

"One more thing," Elder Lu added, his voice dropping even lower. "The Sect Master isn't dead. Song has him bound at the base of the tower, using his core cultivation to anchor the array. If you destroy the node recklessly, you kill your former master along with it."

Ming Xian paused at the doorway, his hand resting on the brass latch.

"He stood by while they stripped my core," Ming Xian said softly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Whatever happens to him beneath that tower is just the settling of an old balance."

Without waiting for a response, Ming Xian pushed the door open and stepped out into the misty streets of Tianzhou, ready to enter the heart of the capital.
