CHAPTER 3

Going for a night party!

Everyone knows high school is never complete without a party.

Okay, minus the fact that I’m sick and have a very tight curfew. I have to be home early because of Zainab, so night parties have always been a luxury for us.

But we had a very good plan—one that was surely going to get us into the party.

I was so excited.

As we walked into school on Monday, we met Kelly, one of the popular girls in school. She was the leader of the cheer squad and was also dating the school heartthrob.

Kelly was organizing this week’s party.

Apparently, my school had a party almost every weekend. That’s just what rich kids do.

They like to party and waste money.

Anyway, she came to us with her flyer.

“Hi, Kelly,” we chorused.

“Hi, Zainab. Hi, Evie. So, are you coming to my party?”

“Yes, we are!” we replied.

The very next second, we heard the loudest scream ever.

She was so excited because it was the first time we had agreed to attend a party—and it was her party, too.

She was ecstatic throughout the day.

So were we.

We helped her share her fliers, and after school, we decided to help her pick out things for the party. Zainab was on her period and wasn’t praying, so she was free to come along.

Since it was a costume party, attending would me easier. Even if our parents saw pictures from the party, they wouldn’t be able to identify us.

It was a win-win situation.

During lunch, when we finally met Diego, we told him about our plan. I watched as his expression changed from horror to pure excitement.

He was glad we could finally make it to a party.

He even wanted us to see some of his dance moves, as if we didn’t already know how good of a dancer he was. He never failed to prove it.

We laughed and chatted.

Finally, it was Saturday.

The party was supposed to start at eight, so I left home by six and told my parents I was sleeping over at Zainab’s.

They suspected nothing.

Zainab did the same.

We met at the park, which was close to Kelly’s place, and changed into our costumes in the park toilet.

I was a pirate

I made sure I looked pretty pirate-ish because, being me, I had to make it rough to hid my cute face. That was the idea.

Nobody would guess it was me because I didn’t normally dress rough like that.

Zainab was dressed as Wednesday.

And gosh, instead of looking scary, she looked so cute I could eat her up.

From there, we met Diego by the entrance of the park. He was dressed as Jack Sparrow.

So, I guess I was his love interest.

He drove us to the party in his car.

It was loud and crazy.

Some people smoked. Some drank. Some came with their dates.

I had no idea parties were like that, but since most of us were already eighteen, I guessed it made sense.

Zainab and I sat down and started chatting with some people until a cute boy asked her to dance.

Then Diego came over and took me to the dance floor.

Oh my!

Everything went crazy fast.

It was fun, and we had the time of our lives. We didn’t drink, though. I think we felt high because of everything happening around us.

Then the craziest thing happened.

Kelly’s home was in the second building of a big apartment complex. As most rich people did, her family had a main apartment and a separate apartment for the children.

Kelly was an only child, so she had the entire place to herself.

I guess her parents had expected to have many children but had no time for them. She told us that her mother was currently pregnant with twins and was due to give birth soon.

Her mother was always moving between home and the hospital, while her father was hardly ever around.

Because of that, her parents allowed her to bring friends over when they weren’t home.

And that was why the party was happening.

Anyway, back to the craziest thing.

Her apartment caught on fire.

Luckily, the fire department arrived on time. Nobody was injured, and everything was settled.

We all helped her arrange everything and get rid of the burnt items. By tomorrow, everything would be replaced and fixed.

So, I think I can officially say that my first party was the best.

We slept over at Diego’s place.

We got there around three in the morning.

We were all so tired that we slept deeply and didn’t even notice when our parents realized we had lied and tracked us to Diego’s house.

We didn’t get into trouble because they knew Diego as a family friend, but they were angry that we had lied about our exact location.

They had been worried, but they were glad they found us.

Luckily, it was Sunday, so we slept in and had more time to rest.

We were too tired for school the next day assuming there was any.

At least, our parents didn’t ask why we were exhausted. They probably assumed we had been playing and having fun and had simply gone to bed late.
