Chapter 1: Meeting

10 min read•Published Sep 25, 2026

Loud noise hit Queenie the second she stepped through the big doors.

She'd been invited by Viola Sinclair, her best friend since before either of them could remember how long that was.

"Oh, look who arrived, guys," a sarcastic voice sang over the bass.

Violet Jones. Curly hair, flawless, black bodycon dress like a second skin.

Queenie bowed her head. Shyness was a reflex.

"Chill, Violet, don't be mean to Queenie... you know she's a shy person," someone said and laughed at the same time.

The laughter wasn't loud, but it was sharp enough to cut through the music. The kind of laugh that wasn't amused. It was a performance.

Queenie's cheeks burned. She clutched the strap of her small, worn tote bag tighter until her knuckles went white. She wasn't wearing a bodycon dress. She was wearing a soft, pale yellow sundress she bought three summers ago, the hem a little faded, her hair tied in a low ponytail because she never learned how to curl it like the other girls. In a room full of women who already knew how to be women, she felt painfully out of place.

She was already regretting coming.

Viola Sinclair's 24th birthday wasn't a party. It was an event. The Sinclair mansion in the hills looked less like a house and more like a private hotel  all glass and white stone, pool glowing electric blue even at dusk. Inside, the music was deafening. The air smelled like expensive perfume, spilled champagne, and something richer underneath. Old money. Dangerous money.

Queenie had known Viola since kindergarten, since Viola stole her crayons and then cried and shared her cookies to apologize. But she'd never really understood where Viola came from until tonight.

"Oh my god, Violet, stop," another girl giggled, hand over her mouth, eyes still locked on Queenie. "She's going to cry."

Violet flipped her hair, her smile cruel and perfect, and stepped closer, holding her champagne glass like a weapon. "What? I'm just saying hi to Viola's charity case. We all know Viola keeps her around to feel better about herself. Isn't that right, Queenie?"

Queenie's throat closed. She'd practiced on the taxi ride over. “Hi, happy birthday, sorry I'm late, your house is beautiful.” Now all the words were stuck behind her heart, beating too loud.

Then a shift.

Subtle, but everyone else felt it before she did. The music was still loud. People were still dancing by the floor-to-ceiling windows. But the laughter around Violet died. The girl who'd giggled with her looked away. Someone near the bar straightened up.

Viola Sinclair appeared out of nowhere, pushing through the crowd in a white silk dress that made her look like a bride. All blonde waves and sunshine and fury.

"Violet Jones, if you say one more word about my best friend, I will have security throw you into the pool with that ugly dress on," Viola snapped, voice sweet, eyes blazing. Then she threw her arms around Queenie, squeezing so tight Queenie could smell her familiar vanilla perfume. "Queenie! You made it! I thought you weren't going to come!"

"Happy birthday, Vi," Queenie managed.

"You look so pretty," Viola whispered, loud enough for Violet to hear. "Don't listen to her. She's just mad because my brother wouldn't look at her twice."

Violet scoffed. "Whatever. Come find me when you want to have actual fun, Viola."

As Violet slunk away, Viola linked her arm through Queenie's. "Come on, I need you. These people are exhausting. They only came for free alcohol and to see if my brother shows up."

Queenie's stomach dropped.

My brother.

Everyone in the city knew the name Sinclair. Officially real estate, private clubs, import-export. Unofficially, even Queenie, who never listened to gossip, knew what people whispered. That the Sinclairs weren't just rich. They were power. And at the top of it, since their father had a stroke two years ago, was Viola's older brother.

Lucifero Sinclair.

Queenie had met him exactly twice. Once when she was nineteen, after sleeping over at Viola's after finals she'd come downstairs in the morning in Viola's oversized t-shirt to get water, and he'd been in the kitchen. Black shirt, sleeves rolled up, tattoos crawling up his forearm, black coffee in his hand. He'd looked at her not like a man looks at a woman, but like someone memorizing something. "You must be Queenie." Voice low, slight accent, rough from sleep.

The second time was last Christmas dinner, which Viola begged her to attend because her family dinners were "so dead." He sat at the head of the table and barely spoke. But every time Queenie dared glance up, his dark eyes were already on her.

He terrified her. He fascinated her. Thirty-two, too handsome in a way that felt like a threat sharp jaw, cold grey eyes, ink-black hair combed back. A Mafia Don. The kind of man mothers warned their daughters about. The kind you didn't look at too long.

He wasn't supposed to be at Viola's birthday. Viola said he hated parties.

Which was why Queenie froze when she felt it.

Not Violet's mean, judging stare. Something heavier. Absolute. Like a hand on the back of her neck.

She looked up.

Second floor. Behind the glass railing of the mezzanine, in the shadows where party lights didn't reach, was Lucifero Sinclair.

No drink. No conversation. All black black shirt, black slacks, no tie, top two buttons undone. Looking directly at her.

For a second, the loud music, the laughing people, the clinking glasses all muted. His gaze pinned her.

Queenie's breath caught. She looked away, heart hammering so hard she was sure Viola could hear it.

"Ignore him," Viola sighed, following her gaze. "He's been in a mood all week. He said he'd only come down for five minutes to say happy birthday and then leave. He looks at everyone like that."

But he didn't. Queenie knew he didn't. He looked at everyone else like furniture.

Lucifero Sinclair had been obsessed with his sister's best friend for three years.

It started as an irritation. His little sister always brings this small, quiet mouse of a girl into his house. A girl who never wore makeup, who said thank you too softly, who left her shoes neatly by the door. Then curiosity. Because unlike everyone else who entered his world, Queenie didn't want anything from him. She didn't flirt. Didn't ask for favors. She didn't look at him with fear and greed. She looked at him with wide, doe-like brown eyes and immediately looked away, like she couldn't bear his weight.

Then curiosity rotted into something darker, deeper. Something he hadn't named because naming it would make it real, and real things had to be controlled.

He knew things he shouldn't. She worked part-time at the little library downtown. She took the 7:15 bus because she hated being late. She bit her bottom lip when she was nervous like right now. Her birthday was in three weeks. The gift was already locked in his safe upstairs. A necklace with a single pearl. Simple. Pure. Like her.

He told himself to stay away. A man like him whose hands had done things that would make her cry if she knew had no right to look at a girl like Queenie. But tonight, seeing her walk through that big door in that yellow dress, lost and soft and surrounded by vultures... something in his chest snapped.

He started to descend the stairs.

Each step deliberate, unhurried. People parted without him having to say a word. The music seemed to lower itself. Conversations died and restarted in whispers.

Violet saw him first and lit up. "Lucifero! I was hoping—"

He walked straight past her as if she didn't exist.

He stopped in front of Queenie.

Up close he was even taller. He smelled like expensive cologne and smoke and something clean, like winter. She had to tilt her head all the way back to meet his eyes and immediately regretted it, because his gaze was devastating up close.

"Queenie," he said, low, barely audible over the music, but she heard every syllable.

"Mr. Sinclair," she whispered, hoarse.

A flicker of amusement, annoyance crossed his face. "Lucifero."

Viola looked between them, eyes wide. "O-kay... I see you've met my shy best friend, brother. Queenie, this is Lucifero. Lucifero, you remember Queenie, right?"

"I remember," he said, not looking at his sister at all. His eyes never left Queenie's face. He reached out slowly, giving her time to pull away, and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers barely brushed her cheek, but Queenie shivered like burned.

"You're cold," he murmured.

"I'm okay," she said too quickly.

He stared a beat longer, then his gaze lifted, scanning the room. The half-empty champagne glasses near her, the way Violet and her friends were still watching, smirking. His jaw tightened. The air around him turned lethal.

"Viola," he said calmly, "get your friend a drink that hasn't been touched by idiots. And get her a chair. She's been standing in those shoes at the door for ten minutes."

"Oh! Right! Yes! Come on, Queenie, kitchen's quieter—"

"I'll take her," Lucifero interrupted. Not a suggestion.

Queenie's eyes widened. "Oh, no, that's— I don't want to trouble—"

"It's no trouble." His hand settled lightly, possessively, on the small of her back. Not pushing. Just guiding. Heat seeped through the thin fabric and made her knees weak.

He led her away from the crowd, away from bass and staring eyes, toward the balcony doors. Viola watched them go, mouth slightly open, a slow, dawning, mischievous smile spreading.

The balcony was quiet. City lights glittered far below. The party became a dull thrum behind glass.

Queenie stepped away as soon as they were outside, arms around herself. "Thank you," she said, staring at the railing.

Lucifero leaned against the railing beside her, not too close, but still caging her in. He pulled out a cigarette, remembered her, and put it away.

"They were being cruel," he said.

"They always are," she whispered, surprising herself. "I shouldn't have come. I don't belong in places like this."

"Places like what?"

"Like this. With people like them. Beautiful, rich, confident... I'm not..."

"You are beautiful," he said simply, stating the fact. The sky was dark. "You are the only beautiful thing in that room."

Her face flamed. "Please don't say that."

"Why not? It's true."

"Because..." She finally looked at him, brown eyes glossy with unshed tears. "Because you don't know me. And when you say it like that, I feel..."

"How do you feel?" His voice dropped.

"Like I'm being seen," she whispered.

For the first time that night, Lucifero Sinclair smiled. Not kind. Dark, satisfied, a little dangerous. The smile of a predator who just heard his prey admit it knew it was caught.

"Good," he said softly, grey eyes drinking her in — the flush on her cheeks, the tremble of her lips, the way her yellow dress fluttered in the wind. "I've been seeing you for a very long time, Queenie. It's about time you felt it."

Behind them, the door opened.

"Queenie? Brother? Are you stealing my best friend?" Viola called, holding two drinks.

Lucifero didn't look away. He found Queenie's hand. Warm, rough, calloused fingers lacing through hers. Tight.

And Queenie — shy, terrified, heart pounding out of her chest — didn't let go.

Viola's smile died when she saw it.

"Oh," she said quietly.

Then the music downstairs didn't fade. It was cut. Dead silence mid-beat.

Violet Jones's voice, drunk and shrill with humiliation, screeched over the DJ's microphone loud enough for the whole mansion to hear:

"Everyone! Everyone listen! You all want to know why the great Lucifero Sinclair finally decided to come downstairs? Ask him what he keeps in his desk drawer! Pictures! Pictures of her! Of Viola's shy little best friend! Ask him how long he's been stalking her!"

Every head turned.

Every phone camera lifted.

And from the driveway below, flashing red and blue lights suddenly washed the balcony in color police cars, silent, surrounding the Sinclair gates, while Lucifero's phone buzzed once in his pocket with a single text.

THEY FOUND HER.
