Chapter 6: Shadows Among the Stars
The descent from Kami’s Lookout felt entirely different this time. The air rushed past my face, but I didn't merely feel the wind—I felt the very currents of the atmosphere, my senses tuned to a razor-sharp edge after a full year of relentless, soul-crushing isolation in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. My new body hummed with a dense, refined power that felt completely foreign to the weak frame I had inherited on day one, yet somehow, after 365 days of brutal discipline, it had finally become mine.
My immediate destination was Capsule Corporation. If I was going to pull off the next phase of my grand design, I needed a very specific interstellar connection, and Bulma’s tech-empire was the only gateway.
When I touched down in the familiar, sprawling courtyard, the evening sun was casting long, amber shadows across the manicured lawns. The hustle and bustle of the estate was already winding down for the night, but I didn't even need to knock. The heavy automated sliding doors hissed open, and I stepped into the brightly lit foyer, instantly catching the rich, savory aroma of a massive family dinner being prepared in the grand dining hall.
I walked in with a steady, unhurried stride. The chatter at the long mahogany table died down almost instantly.
Bulma was the first to look up, her expression a mix of weary familiarity and lingering disbelief from our last encounter. But she wasn't alone. Sitting right beside her, cutting into a rare steak with clinical precision, was the Prince of All Saiyans himself.
Vegeta paused mid-motion. His fork scraped against the porcelain plate with a sharp, grating sound. Slowly, those dark, piercing eyes lifted, locking onto me.
For a second, the dining hall fell into an absolute, suffocating dead silence. Vegeta’s brow furrowed deep, a flicker of genuine shock—and something dangerously close to competitive bewilderment—flashing across his features. It wasn't just my casual red t-shirt and beige pants, or the thick, styled black hair that framed my face. It was the sheer physical geometry of the situation.
I was standing taller than him.
The proud Saiyan prince, accustomed to looking down on nearly everyone outside of his immediate combat circle, was now forced to tilt his chin up just a fraction to meet my gaze. The dense, suppressed hum of ki radiating beneath my skin didn't go unnoticed by him, either. Vegeta’s grip on his silverware tightened so hard the metal groaned in protest.
"Well, well," Vegeta muttered, his voice low, gravelly, and laced with a quiet, simmering disbelief. "What in the name of a worthless lower-class joke happened to you, bald man?"
Before I could answer, a loud gasp echoed from the other end of the table. Trunks nearly dropped his juice glass, his jaw dropping as he stared up at me like I was a ghost.
"Uncle Krillin?!’" Trunks blurted out, pointing a finger back and forth between me and his mother. "Wait... are you wearing a wig? And since when are you... taller than Dad?!"
Even Bulma’s parents looked up from their plates, blinking in confusion. Bulma herself dropped her fork, letting out a long, theatrical sigh as she rubbed her temples.
"Don't look at me," Bulma groaned, leaning back in her chair and eyeing my new, towering frame with an expression that blended exhaustion with morbid curiosity. "The last time he came over, he used the Dragon Balls to give himself a growth spurt and a spa day. Now he apparently decided to spend a year locked away somewhere playing mountain hermit. So, Krillin," she continued, pinning me with a sharp, demanding stare, "you showed up right at dinner time with half the estate staring at you like you're an alien. Why are you really here?"
I offered a calm, easygoing smile, sliding into an empty seat near the end of the table. The tension in the room was thick enough to chew, especially with Vegeta’s unblinking, predatory gaze burning holes into the side of my face. He was trying to gauge my power level, calculating every micro-movement, deeply unsettled by the sudden anomaly standing in front of him.
"Relax, everyone. Eat your food," I said smoothly, picking up a glass of water. "As for why I'm here, Bulma... let's just say I have some unfinished business among the stars."
Vegeta narrowed his eyes, leaning forward. "The stars? Ha! A pathetic Earthling suddenly decides he wants to play space explorer? You couldn't survive five minutes out in the deeper quadrants without getting vaporized by a common space pirate, let alone whatever else is lurking in the dark."
"Is that a challenge, Vegeta?" I asked, turning my head to meet his intense gaze head-on, my voice entirely steady. "Because I think you'd be surprised by what a year of absolute focus can do."
Vegeta’s eyes flared with a dangerous, competitive spark, his lips parting as if he wanted nothing more than to test my new limits right here across the dining table. But before the prince could stand up and level the entire West City block, Bulma slammed her hand flat against the table.
"Enough! Both of you!" she barked, shooting a glare at Vegeta before turning her piercing blue eyes back to me. "You want to talk about space? What are you even talking about, Krillin? You're acting completely unhinged."
"Trust me, you'll find out soon enough," I replied, keeping my tone mysterious and unyielding. "And speaking of space... Bulma, I need a favor. Can you get in touch with Jaco for me? I need to talk to the Galactic Patrol."
The room went dead silent again. Bulma blinked, her mouth opening slightly in sheer astonishment.
"Jaco? The Galactic Patrolman?" Bulma repeated, incredulous. "What on earth could you possibly want with him? Are you planning to commit interstellar tax evasion or something?"
"Nothing like that," I chuckled softly, leaning back in my chair and folding my arms across my chest. "Just looking for a career change. I'm thinking of enlisting."
Vegeta let out a short, harsh bark of laughter, though his eyes remained dead serious, tracking every shift in my posture. "Enlisting? The Galactic Patrol doesn't take washed-up martial artists who spend their lives hiding behind Saiyans."
"Well, times are changing, Vegeta," I said, my gaze hardening just a fraction as I stared past him toward the massive glass windows overlooking the evening sky.
Deep down, the clock was ticking. Beerus was out there, restless and itching for a fight against a mythical warrior that didn't exist yet. The Earth was sitting on a ticking time bomb, and I couldn't afford to sit around playing domestic househusband while waiting for disaster to drop from the heavens. I needed resources, authority, jurisdiction across the cosmos, and a way to build my own strength far away from the fragile safety of Earth before the gods came knocking.
Bulma stared at me for a long, quiet moment, realizing that no amount of arguing was going to change my mind. With a heavy sigh, she pulled out her high-tech capsule phone, tapping aggressively at the screen.
"Fine. You're completely out of your mind, Krillin. But if you get yourself arrested across the galaxy, I am not coming to bail you out," she muttered, before lifting the device to her ear. "Jaco? Yeah, it's Bulma. Listen, I've got an absolute idiot here who wants to talk to you about the Galactic Patrol..."
A few moments passed, the faint, high-pitched squawking of the galactic policeman echoing through the speaker before Bulma handed the device over to me.
"He says he's on his way," Bulma said, rolling her eyes. "Good luck, space cadet."
I took the phone, a fierce spark of anticipation igniting in my chest. My old life as the universe's favorite punching bag was officially dead. The new journey was about to begin, and I was going to write every single line of it, starting with a badge and a uniform among the stars.
