Chapter 4: A New Era and Unfinished Business
The courtyard fell into a brief, echoing silence as the last ripples of Shenron's magic faded into the upper atmosphere. Bulma stood frozen, her hands planted on her hips as she tilted her head back at an uncomfortable angle just to lock eyes with me.
"I mean it, Krillin," she repeated, her voice dripping with a mix of utter bewilderment and sharp corporate interrogation. "One day you're a bald, three-foot-tall punching bag, and the next you show up looking like a completely different person, taller than Goku, and wishing for space-travel immunity? Have you completely lost your mind?"
I couldn't help the wide grin that stretched across my face. I reached up, running a hand through my newly acquired, thick black hair—feeling the exact texture and weight that matched the character design I had envisioned.
"Trust me, Bulma, you have no idea how liberating this is," I chuckled, stepping closer and effortlessly towering over her in a way Krillin had never been able to do in his life. "No more looking up at everyone. No more billiard ball jokes. And as for space? Let's just say a guy likes to be prepared when the next cosmic threat decides to drop in for tea."
Bulma pinched the bridge of her nose, letting out a long, dramatic sigh. "You're unbelievable. Knowing you, this is going to lead to some massive headache for me later." She pointed a finger right at my chest. "You owe me a massive explanation over lunch, got it? But first... you better go home and see what 18 has to say about her husband suddenly sprouting a foot of height and a full head of hair."
My smile faltered just a fraction at the mention of 18. Right. That's going to be a fun conversation.
"Good point," I muttered, rubbing the back of my neck. "Alright, Bulma, I'll catch you later. Thanks for the use of the dragon balls!"
Before she could chew me out any further, I bent my knees, channeled a burst of bright white ki beneath my boots, and blasted off toward the sky. The rush of air felt incredible—clean, sharp, and entirely unrestricted by my old, diminutive frame.
Cruising back toward my house, the adrenaline of what I had just accomplished buzzed through my veins. I had fixed my appearance, solved my height complex, and secured a literal survival perk for deep space. But the real test wasn't a mythical dragon or a world-ending monster; it was walking through my front door and facing an ex-assassination android who was used to a very specific, short husband.
I descended smoothly onto the front porch, landing with a light tap of my sneakers instead of the heavy, awkward thud I used to make. I pushed the front door open, stepping into the quiet living room.
Marron was sitting on the rug playing with her toys, looking up as the door creaked. She blinked once, tilted her head, and went right back to her blocks, completely unfazed—or perhaps children just roll with whatever bizarre mutations happen in a house full of martial artists.
From the kitchen, the soft clinking of dishes halted. Footsteps padded lightly across the floor, and 18 stepped out into the hallway, her expression locked in its usual cool, unimpressed mask.
She stopped dead in her tracks.
Her icy blue eyes swept upward, traveling all the way from my shoes, past my red t-shirt and beige pants, up over broad shoulders, and finally landing on my face—taking in the thick black hair and the fact that I was now looking down at her instead of sideways.
The heavy silence in the hallway stretched so tight you could hear a pin drop.
For the first time since I had woken up in this body, a genuine, undeniable trace of shock flickered across Android 18's flawless face. Her lips parted slightly, her eyes narrowing as she tried to process the physical impossibility standing right in front of her.
"Krillin..." she said slowly, her voice dropping an octave as she crossed her arms, her gaze sharp enough to cut glass. "Care to explain why you look like you just grew an entire foot of height, sprouted a head of hair, and walked out of a completely different anime?"
I swallowed hard, offering a nervous, sheepish grin as I rubbed the back of my neck.
Well, I thought, here goes nothing.
