Chapter 17: The Silent Signal
Morning returned the village to its peaceful rhythm.
The Harvest Festival had ended.
The colorful ribbons were gone, and the market stalls had been taken down before sunrise.
Only a few flower petals remained scattered across the square.
Kyle unlocked the clinic door.
"It feels strangely quiet after yesterday."
Lyra smiled as she arranged a few chairs outside.
"I think the village needed a day like that."
"So do I."
Before long, the first patient of the morning arrived.
An elderly woman carrying a walking stick entered slowly.
"My knees have been bothering me again."
Kyle welcomed her inside.
"I've prepared a new herbal ointment."
"It should ease the pain."
As Kyle examined her, Lyra carefully ground dried herbs into a fine powder.
She had begun remembering where everything belonged.
Without being told, she handed Kyle exactly the herbs he needed.
The old woman noticed.
"You two work together like you've known each other for years."
Kyle looked at Lyra with a smile.
"I was thinking the same thing."
Lyra lowered her eyes, slightly embarrassed.
"I've only been watching you."
Kyle shook his head.
"No."
"You've been learning."
"And learning quickly."
The old woman accepted the small jar of medicine before smiling warmly at Lyra.
"I hope you'll stay in our village for a long time."
For a brief moment...
Lyra's smile faded.
"I..."
She didn't know how to answer.
Would she stay?
Or would she leave the moment she found the one she had been searching for?
Kyle noticed her hesitation.
Before the silence became uncomfortable, he gently changed the subject.
"Remember to avoid working too hard for the next few days."
The elderly woman nodded happily.
"I will."
After she left, Lyra quietly looked out the window.
The village was peaceful.
Safe.
Each passing day made leaving it feel a little more difficult.
Far beyond the western forests...
A gray pigeon landed on the windowsill of a small inn.
The hunter untied the tiny scroll fastened to its leg.
It bore only a single sentence.
**"No unusual lights have appeared again."**
He read the message twice before burning it over the candle beside him.
"So..."
"The trail has gone cold."
He folded his map and stood.
"If the lights won't appear again..."
"I'll have to search another way."
Picking up his cloak, he stepped outside.
Instead of following rumors...
He decided to begin visiting the western villages one by one.
Somewhere among them...
Someone had to know more than they realized.
The clinic remained busy throughout the morning.
Villagers came and went, collecting medicine, herbal tea, and simple remedies for aches brought on by the recent storm.
By midday, the flow of patients finally slowed.
Kyle placed the last bundle of herbs onto the shelf and let out a quiet breath.
"I think we've earned a short break."
Lumi, who had been sorting dried flowers nearby, immediately looked up.
"Finally."
"I thought you were going to work until midnight again."
Kyle laughed.
"I wasn't planning to."
Lumi gave him a suspicious look.
"That's what you always say."
Lyra smiled as she poured warm tea into three small cups.
"She's not wrong."
Kyle accepted his cup with a helpless grin.
"It seems I've lost this argument already."
For a few peaceful minutes, the three sat together outside the clinic beneath the shade of the wooden awning.
The village square was quiet, with only a few farmers passing by on their carts.
Lumi suddenly leaned forward.
"Lyra, you never told me what festivals are like where you come from."
Lyra's fingers tightened slightly around her cup.
"They're... different."
"Bigger?"
"In some ways."
She chose her words carefully.
"There were many lights."
"And music that could be heard from far away."
Lumi's eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"That sounds wonderful."
Kyle watched Lyra quietly.
Whenever she spoke about her past, there was always a distance in her eyes, as though she were looking at a place no one else could see.
Before he could ask another question, hurried footsteps approached the clinic.
A traveling merchant stopped in front of them, wiping sweat from his brow.
"Excuse me," he said politely.
"Is this the only clinic in the village?"
Kyle stood.
"It is."
"My horse has been limping since this morning."
"I was told the village healer might know something that could help."
Kyle nodded.
"Let me take a look."
As they walked toward the merchant's cart, Lyra noticed something unusual hanging from it.
A small metal charm shaped like a compass.
For the briefest moment, one of the jewels hidden beneath her clothing grew faintly warm.
Lyra froze.
The warmth disappeared almost immediately.
Kyle turned back when he noticed she had stopped walking.
"Lyra?"
She forced a calm expression.
"It's nothing."
"I thought I felt dizzy for a moment."
Kyle looked concerned, but she smiled reassuringly.
"I'm fine."
Still...
As she followed him toward the merchant's horse, a quiet unease settled deep within her heart.
Something in the western lands was beginning to stir again.
Kyle carefully examined the merchant's horse.
The animal stood quietly, occasionally lifting its front leg.
Kyle gently ran his hand down the injured limb.
"Hmm..."
"The joint isn't broken."
The merchant let out a relieved sigh.
"So it isn't serious?"
Kyle shook his head.
"No."
"It looks like a mild strain."
"He probably stepped into a hole while traveling."
The merchant nodded.
"The roads have been rough since the storm."
Kyle opened his medical bag and removed a small jar of herbal ointment.
"This will reduce the swelling."
"He should rest for two or three days."
"If you keep riding him now..."
"The injury will only get worse."
"I understand."
As Kyle applied the ointment, Lyra gently stroked the horse's neck.
The frightened animal gradually relaxed.
The merchant smiled.
"He likes you."
Lyra smiled back.
"Animals usually know when someone means them no harm."
Kyle glanced at her.
"You have a calming presence."
Lyra laughed softly.
"Perhaps."
After wrapping the horse's leg, Kyle stepped back.
"That should do it."
The merchant reached into his satchel.
"Please accept this."
He placed a small cloth pouch on the table outside the clinic.
Kyle frowned.
"That's too much."
The merchant shook his head.
"You've treated both me and my horse."
"It's the least I can do."
Before leaving, he hesitated.
"By the way..."
"I passed through several villages on my way here."
"There are more travelers on the western roads than usual."
Kyle looked up.
"Merchants?"
"Some."
"But others..."
"They ask strange questions."
Lyra quietly lifted her head.
"What kind of questions?"
The merchant thought for a moment.
"They ask whether anyone has seen unusual lights..."
"Or heard stories about glowing stones."
Kyle exchanged a quick glance with Lyra.
"I suppose travelers enjoy chasing legends."
The merchant laughed.
"Perhaps."
"But they don't look like treasure hunters."
"They're too... disciplined."
After thanking Kyle once more, the merchant climbed into his wagon and continued down the village road.
Silence settled over the clinic.
Lumi looked between Kyle and Lyra.
"Do you think they're really looking for treasure?"
Kyle shrugged.
"Rumors spread quickly."
"Especially after storms."
Lyra forced a small smile.
"...You're probably right."
But deep inside...
She knew better.
Someone else...
Was searching for the Fox Jewels.
Far away, beneath the shade of a lonely tree, the hunter folded another map.
His horse shifted impatiently beside him.
He looked toward the distant western mountains.
"So..."
"The rumors are beginning to spread."
Without another word, he mounted his horse.
This time...
He was no longer following legends.
He was following a trail.
The afternoon slowly gave way to evening.
The last rays of sunlight painted the western hills in shades of gold.
Kyle closed the clinic window and placed the remaining jars of medicine back onto their shelves.
"It was a busy day."
Lyra nodded.
"But a peaceful one."
Kyle smiled.
"I hope we have many more days like this."
As he locked the medicine cabinet, Lyra's thoughts drifted back to the merchant's words.
People asking about strange lights...
It couldn't be a coincidence.
Not anymore.
Just then, Lumi appeared at the doorway carrying a basket.
"Mother sent dinner again."
Kyle laughed.
"One day she'll stop believing I can feed myself."
Lumi grinned.
"I don't think that day will ever come."
The three shared a quiet meal outside the clinic while the evening breeze cooled the air.
Villagers passed by, waving as they returned to their homes.
Everything looked peaceful.
Almost too peaceful.
Far away...
The hunter arrived at another roadside town before sunset.
Unlike the others, this town was filled with travelers heading west.
He entered a small inn and quietly listened as people exchanged stories over their evening meals.
"...I heard a healer in one of the western villages can cure almost anything."
Another traveler shrugged.
"That's probably just another village tale."
"Maybe."
"But merchants keep mentioning him."
The hunter's expression remained calm.
A healer...
He memorized the detail without asking a single question.
Sometimes...
The smallest rumors led to the greatest discoveries.
After finishing his meal, he rented a room for the night.
Before extinguishing the candle, he unfolded his map once more.
Several villages had already been crossed out.
Only a handful remained unexplored.
His finger slowly stopped over one unmarked area.
The western valley.
"...Tomorrow."
He rolled up the map.
"I'll begin there."
Outside the inn, the wind carried the scent of distant forests.
Unaware of it...
The hunter had finally chosen the road that would one day lead him to Kyle's village.
But for now...
Fate still allowed the village a little more time.
