The Morning the Sky Changed
The first thing Daniel noticed was the silence.
It was 5:17am in the morning, but the neighborhood felt as though the entire world had fallen asleep.
Daniel stood beside his bedroom window, staring into the darkness.
Normally, this was the hour when the city slowly began to wake. Birds sang from the trees. Cars moved along the distant road. Neighbors opened their gates. Someone was always shouting at a child to hurry up for school.
But that morning, there was nothing, not even a dog barking.
Daniel knew that something was wrong.
He reached for his phone and checked the time again. A minute had passed
His phone suddenly lost its signal.
"No network?"
He restarted it, but nothing changed.
Daniel walked toward the window again. That was when he saw the light.
At first, he thought it was the sunrise. But the light wasn't coming from the horizon.
It was coming from above it.
A strange red glow spread across the clouds.
Daniel's heart began beating faster.
"Mom?"
No answer.
"Mom!"
He hurried out of his room.
His mother was in the kitchen, preparing tea.
"What is it?" she asked.
"Come and see this."
She followed him to the window.
The moment she looked outside, she stopped.
The cup in her hand slipped onto the floor.
"What... is that?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Neither of them had an answer.
Something enormous was hanging in the sky.
It was black, not dark gray, not metallic silver. It was just Black.
It seemed to absorb the little light around it.
There were no wings,no engines,no visible windows.
It simply floated above the city as if gravity had stopped applying to it.
Then another appeared.
And another.
And another.
Within seconds, the entire sky was filled with them.
His mother stepped backward.
"Daniel, lock the doors."
"But"
"Now!"
He ran to the front door.
Outside, people were pouring into the streets.
Some were pointing at the sky.
Others were running.
Then a deep vibration moved through the ground.
The windows shook,The lights flickered.
A car alarm began screaming somewhere nearby.
Then every television in the neighborhood switched on.
A government emergency message appeared.
"This is an emergency broadcast. Remain indoors. Do not approach the unidentified objects. Do not attempt to communicate with it"
The screen went black.
Daniel stared at it.
"That can't be good."
His mother said nothing.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
No number.
Unknown caller.
He hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
Static.
Then a voice.
"Daniel."
Only to find out it was his own voice.
He immediately ended the call.
His mother stared at him.
"Who was that?"
"I don't know."
The phone rang again.
This time, he didn't answer.
Three seconds later, every phone in the house rang simultaneously.
His mother's, and his.
Even an old phone sitting in a drawer that hadn't worked in years.
Then all the ringing stopped.
Silence returned.
A terrible silence.
Daniel looked outside.
Something was standing at the end of the street.
It was tall.
Too tall to be human.
Its body appeared thin, almost fragile, but something about it made Daniel instinctively step away from the window.
Its face was pale, its eyes reflected the red sky, it wasn't moving.
It was simply watching.
Then it turned its head.
Directly toward Daniel's house.
Daniel ducked.
"Mom!"
They rushed into the storage room and locked the door.
Neither spoke.
Minutes passed.
Then they heard footsteps.
Slow coming towards the fort door heavy one step after another.
The footsteps stopped outside their house.
Daniel held his mother's hand.
Someone or something knocked on the front door.
Three times.
Then a voice came from outside.
"Daniel."
His mother's eyes widened.
It was his voice again.
The door creaked.
Then everything went silent.
A few seconds later, something metallic rolled across the floor and stopped beneath the storage-room door.
A small black sphere, a red light blinked on its surface.
Words appeared in glowing letters.
WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING YOU.
Daniel stared.
Another sentence appeared.
YOUR WORLD WILL NOT BE DESTROYED.
His mother whispered, "What does that mean?"
The final message appeared.
IT WILL BE TAKEN.
The sphere went dark. Then the electricity returned.
The television switched on. This time, there was no government message.
There was a woman on the screen. Daniel recognized her immediately.
Dr. Amelia Carter.
She was one of the world's most famous astrophysicists.
Her face was pale.
Behind her was a laboratory filled with computer screens.
"If you're seeing this," she said, "then they have arrived."
Daniel leaned closer.
Dr. Carter looked directly into the camera.
"Do not trust the broadcasts coming from your governments. They don't understand what we're dealing with."
The screen suddenly flickered.
Dr. Carter continued.
"Twenty-three years ago, we detected a signal coming from outside our solar system."
Daniel's mother covered her mouth.
"We thought it was a message." "But it wasn't."
The screen went black.
Then a final sentence appeared.
THE SIGNAL WAS A WARNING.
Daniel stared at the television.
"Twenty-three years ago?"
His mother slowly sat down.
"Daniel..."
Before she could finish, someone knocked on the back door.
Daniel becomes afraid.
His mother whispered, "Who is that?"
A familiar voice answered.
"Daniel, it's me."
Daniel's heart jumped.
"Samuel?"
Samuel was his closest friend.
They had grown up together. School, football, late-night conversations, they had been practically brothers.
Daniel opened the door.
Samuel rushed inside.
His clothes were covered in dust.
"Where's your mother?"
"She's here."
Samuel looked relieved.
Then he noticed Daniel's expression.
"What?"
"You saw them?"
Samuel nodded.
"They took my father."
Daniel went silent.
"I'm sorry."
Samuel shook his head.
"Don't be. We have to leave."
"Leave where?"
"Anywhere."
A loud explosion shook the city.
Samuel looked toward the window.
"They're coming."
Daniel grabbed a backpack.
His mother collected water and a few supplies.
Then Daniel noticed someone standing across the street.
A girl.
She was around his age.
Dark hair with a blue jacket.
She was staring directly at their house. Daniel had never seen her before.
But she looked strangely familiar. The girl raised her hand.
In her palm was the same black sphere. Daniel stepped toward the window.
The girl mouthed four words.
Don't trust your friend.
Daniel's expression changed.He turned around.
Samuel was standing behind him.
"What's wrong?"
Daniel looked at Samuel.
For the first time in his life, he wasn't sure he could trust his best friend.
Then the girl across the street disappeared. She simply vanished.
Daniel stared at the empty street.
Samuel grabbed his shoulder.
"We have to go."
Daniel looked at him.
"Who are you?"
Samuel's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it. He saw the expression on Samuel instantly changed
Then Samuel whispered something that made Daniel's pause for a moment.
"I was hoping you'd never find out."
Outside, the alien ships began moving.
The largest ship in the sky opened like an enormous eye.
A blue light spread across the clouds.
And every person on Earth heard the same voice inside their minds.
HUMANS OF EARTH.
Daniel fell silent.
YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN.
The voice continued.
NOT FOR WHAT YOU HAVE BECOME...
The sky turned completely white.
BUT FOR WHAT YOU WERE BEFORE YOU WERE HUMAN.
Daniel stared upward.
His mother screamed his name.
Samuel stepped backward. And somewhere far above Earth, something ancient woke up.
Something that had been waiting for humanity for thousands of years.
The invasion had begun.
But it wasn't an invasion.
It was a return.
