Chapter 2 The Price of Dignity
Dawn slipped through the crack of the gray curtains that were not fully closed, bringing with it a pale, cold, and unforgiving light. Room 809 was now silent, leaving behind the remaining plumes of last night's passion that felt foreign and chilling.
Aurely opened her eyes slowly. The first thing that greeted her was a throbbing pain in the lower part of her body, followed by an immense exhaustion that reached deep into her bones. When she tried to shift her body on the bed, the friction of the gray silk sheets against her bare skin felt like coarse sandpaper.
She turned to the side. The side of the bed next to her was already cold, leaving deep creases in an empty pillow that still retained a hint of a masculine, fresh citrus scent and expensive tobacco. Charlie Ralph was gone. The man had evaporated along with the darkness of the night, leaving Aurely alone in a silk cage that now felt like a grave for her dignity.
With trembling hands, Aurely pulled the blanket to cover her body as she stood up. Every step toward the bathroom felt like actual physical torture.
Inside the black marble-floored bathroom, Aurely turned on the shower tap. She stood beneath the stream of warm water that instantly washed over her body. Aurely looked up, letting the water drench her face, trying to wash away the lingering traces of last night's touch that seemed permanently attached to her skin.
Slowly, her trembling fingers caressed her own neck, then moved down to her collarbone and chest. Under the dim bathroom lights, the mirror's reflection displayed contrasting reddish marks on her milky-white skin—marks of ownership left behind by Charlie's lips and rough suction.
Erotic memories of last night suddenly replayed without her being able to stop them. She remembered how Charlie's large fingers gripped her wrists until they turned red, how the man's lips stifled her moans, and how their extreme, demanding physical union robbed her of all sanity.
That rough yet somehow intoxicating touch sent a hot flutter through her chest once again, triggering an overwhelming sense of guilt deep within her heart. Her body had betrayed her own mind.
"Stop it... please, stop it," Aurely whispered to herself, her voice husky and trembling amidst the roar of the shower water. She scrubbed her skin harshly with soap until it turned red, trying to erase the burning sensation that still lingered there.
After putting back on her champagne satin dress, which now felt exceedingly loose and dirty, Aurely stepped out of the bathroom with her hair still wet. Her eyes immediately locked onto the teak vanity table near the large window.
On the marble surface of the table lay a light green check with a fantastic numerical value written in thick black ink. Twenty thousand dollars. A figure written so neatly, as though her purity and suffering last night were merely a numerical transaction on a piece of paper.
Beside the check, there was a small, pristine white memo sheet. Aurely stepped closer, holding her breath as she read the slanting, sharp lines of handwriting written in cold authority above it.
"Extra payment for something 'untouched.' Take the money, forget tonight, and don't ever think about looking for me again." — C.R.
Aurely read the memo repeatedly. Every word in it felt like a dagger plunged straight into her heart.
"Untouched..." Aurely muttered softly.
The tears she had been holding back finally spilled over, dampening her pale cheeks. She reached for the check. Her fingers crumpled the valuable paper until it became slightly creased. On one hand, she wanted to tear this paper into meaningless scraps and throw them into that arrogant man's face. She wanted to scream that her dignity could not be priced with sheets of paper.
However, on the other hand, visions of Leo's face smiling as he received his new college books, along with Mia's cheerful laughter no longer needing to hide her face in shame over overdue school fees, flashed across her mind. This money was the breath of life for her younger siblings. Without this money, their futures would be completely shattered on the cruel streets of S City.
"Why does it have to be like this?" Aurely's sob broke in the silence of the room. She slid down to sit on the cold floor, hugging her knees tightly while clutching the crumpled check to her chest. "Why does my world have to be this cruel, Leo... Mia..."
Her emotional ruin felt so thick and layered. Her dignity had completely collapsed, turning into dust swept away by the corporate ruler's greed for money. Yet in the end, her love for her family conquered her wounded ego. She had to survive. She had to cash this money.
With steps forced upright even though her body still felt shaky and pained, Aurely walked out of the lobby of the Lucia Inn Hotel. The cold morning wind of S City immediately pierced her pores through the thin dress she wrapped in a worn coat.
She walked along the quiet sidewalk, clutching her handbag tightly as if protecting the only remaining hope inside it.
Just as she had walked a few dozen meters from the hotel gate, a jet-black luxury sedan with heavily tinted windows slowly crept up beside her. The car glided noiselessly, cutting through the silence of the dawn street.
The car's speed slowed as its position aligned with Aurely's steps.
Behind the thick, dark glass, in the silence of the luxurious cabin, Charlie Ralph sat in the back seat with an unlit cigar between his fingers. His sharp, cold eagle eyes focused entirely on Aurely's fragile silhouette through the side mirror and car window.
He noticed how the woman walked while slightly holding back pain, how her wet hair blew in the morning wind, and how those fragile shoulders seemed to carry the weight of the entire world.
There was a flash of strange obsession and unreadable curiosity in Charlie's black obsidian gaze as he stared at Aurely's back, which slowly receded and vanished behind the street corner. The man knew that even though he had left a cold memo behind, the web of fate between them had only just begun.
