Chapter Nine — The Shadow That Answered
The next morning, Master Seris took them somewhere none of them had seen before.
They descended beneath the Academy.
And then they descended again.
And again.
By the time they reached the bottom, even Kai had stopped making jokes.
The doors opened.
They stepped into darkness.
Not ordinary darkness.
This darkness moved.
It crawled across the enormous walls like liquid.
The floor beneath their feet was black glass, and beneath it they could see hundreds of tiny lights moving like stars trapped underneath the earth.
There were no torches.
No lamps.
Only shadows.
Seris stood at the edge of the chamber.
“Today, you learn the second layer of your abilities.”
Vikram looked around.
“Why does this place feel like it wants to kill us?”
“Because it does.”
Vikram nodded.
“Fair enough.”
Seris ignored him.
“Shadow is not an absence of light. It is energy. It has memory. It responds to intention.”
Rayden stepped forward.
“So we control it.”
“You persuade it.”
Rayden looked at the floor.
“What's the difference?”
“You'll find out.”
The seven were separated into circles.
“Bring the shadow to you.”
The room went silent.
Rayden closed his eyes.
The darkness beneath his feet moved immediately.
A black ribbon curled around his ankle.
He opened his eyes.
It rose.
Zayne tried.
Nothing.
Kai tried.
A tiny black flame appeared in his palm.
He stared at it.
“Does that count?”
“No.”
“Worth asking.”
Vikram closed his eyes.
The shadow beside him trembled.
Then disappeared.
He opened one eye.
“Did I do it?”
“No.”
“Right.”
Aurora tried.
The darkness moved slightly.
She smiled.
“Almost.”
Lyra's shadow stretched several feet before snapping back.
“Again,” Seris said.
They tried.
And tried.
And tried.
By the end of the lesson, only three had managed to pull the shadows toward themselves.
Rayden.
Lyra.
And Vikram.
Mei had managed nothing.
Not even a flicker.
She stood alone in her circle.
Her fists tightened.
Seris looked at her.
“Enough for today.”
Mei nodded.
“Okay.”
But she didn't leave.
Not immediately.
She stared at the shadow beneath her feet.
It stared back.
The next night, the Academy slept.
Mei didn't.
She slipped out of her room.
Quietly.
She walked through the corridors.
Down the stairs.
Into the underground chamber.
She stood in the middle of the black glass floor.
“Come on.”
Nothing.
She tried again.
“Just move.”
Nothing.
She sat down.
For almost an hour, she tried.
Nothing.
Eventually she went back to bed.
The next night—
she returned.
Nothing.
The night after—
nothing.
On the fourth night, she managed to move one tiny strand of darkness.
It vanished almost immediately.
Mei smiled anyway.
“Okay.”
The fifth night.
Nothing.
The sixth.
A flicker.
The seventh.
A shadow moved three inches.
Mei stared at it.
Her heart began beating faster.
“Again.”
The shadow disappeared.
She laughed quietly.
“Again.”
On the eighth night, the Academy was silent.
The Seven had finished dinner hours ago.
Everyone was asleep.
Everyone except Mei.
She stood alone in the chamber.
Her hair was tied back.
Her sleeves were rolled up.
Her hands were shaking.
She looked exhausted.
She had bruises along her arms from training.
A small cut crossed her cheek.
She had spent eight nights failing.
But tonight felt different.
She closed her eyes.
She stopped trying to command the darkness.
Instead, she listened.
The chamber was completely silent.
Then she felt it.
Something.
A pulse.
Deep beneath the floor.
Mei opened her eyes.
The shadows moved.
Slowly.
A thin black line curled around her foot.
Mei didn't breathe.
Another followed.
Then another.
The darkness climbed her legs.
Wrapped around her arms.
She lifted one hand.
The shadows followed.
They gathered in her palm.
Mei stared at them.
“I did it.”
The shadows rose.
They formed a long, thin blade.
Then a bird.
Then a wolf.
Then—
A roar shook the chamber.
Mei froze.
The Academy bells exploded into life.
DONG.
DONG.
DONG.
She looked toward the ceiling.
“What was that?”
Another roar.
Closer.
The entire underground chamber shook.
Mei ran upstairs.
The Academy was still dark.
Students were waking.
Doors opened.
Voices echoed through the corridors.
Then something crashed through the eastern wall.
Stone exploded inward.
A massive creature landed in the courtyard.
It looked almost like a wolf.
But it was enormous.
Its body was covered in black scales.
Two enormous horns curved from its skull.
Its eyes burned white.
Students screamed.
Teachers ran into the courtyard.
But the creature moved faster.
It slammed one of the stone towers.
The tower cracked.
Mei stood frozen at the end of the corridor.
Nobody had noticed her.
She looked around.
The creature was moving toward the sleeping residence wing.
Toward her friends.
She stepped forward.
“No.”
The creature roared.
Mei raised her hand.
Nothing happened.
Her breath shook.
“Come on.”
The shadow beneath her feet trembled.
She remembered the eighth night.
The darkness climbing her arms.
The tiny bird.
The wolf.
She closed her eyes.
“Come to me.”
The shadows exploded outward.
They raced across the courtyard.
The creature turned.
Too late.
Black tendrils wrapped around its legs.
It fell.
Mei opened her eyes.
She was controlling them.
All of them.
Hundreds of shadows stretched across the courtyard, twisting around the creature.
It struggled.
Mei screamed.
“Stay down!”
The shadows tightened.
The creature roared again.
Mei nearly lost control.
Then another shadow appeared beside her.
Rayden.
He stood there barefoot, half-awake.
He stared at the creature.
Then at Mei.
“You did it.”
Mei looked at him.
“I—”
The creature broke free.
Rayden stepped forward.
Darkness erupted around his body.
Together, their shadows collided.
One black.
One silver.
The creature was thrown backward.
The Academy doors opened.
The others came running.
Kai appeared first.
“What the hell is happening?”
Vikram followed.
“Why is there a demon dog?”
Lyra stared at Mei.
“Wait.”
She pointed.
“Is that your shadow?”
Mei looked down.
A tiny shadow wolf sat beside her foot.
It wagged its tail.
Mei smiled.
“Yeah.”
Kai looked at the destroyed courtyard.
Then at Mei.
Then at the monster.
“Okay.”
He cracked his knuckles.
“Who invited the dog?”
Vikram grinned.
“Not me.”
Aurora stepped forward.
“Everyone ready?”
Zayne's wind began to rise.
Kai's hands caught fire.
Aurora summoned water.
Lyra's hair lifted behind her.
Vikram's eyes sharpened.
Rayden's s
hadows spread across the ground.
And Mei stood among them.
For the first time, she wasn't struggling to make the darkness obey.
It was already listening.
The seven moved together.
And above them, unseen by the students, Headmaster Seraphina watched from the highest tower.
Her expression wasn't one of relief.
It was fear.
Because the creature hadn't come to attack the Academy.
It had come looking for something.
And somewhere beyond the Academy walls—
something had just realized that the Seven were beginning to awaken.
