Chapter Eleven — The Seven Trials

The forest swallowed them within seconds.

The moment Kai stepped through the entrance, the Academy disappeared.

There were no walls.

No teachers.

No other students.

Only enormous trees stretching higher than buildings, their branches twisted together so tightly that almost no sunlight reached the ground.

The air smelled wet.

Something moved in the distance.

Kai looked around.

“Okay.”

Vikram glanced at him.

“What?”

“This place is horrible.”

“You said you wanted an adventure.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of a picnic.”

Zayne rolled his eyes.

“We're wasting time.”

Kai looked at him.

“Bro, it's not about who comes first.”

Zayne kept walking.

“Correct.”

Kai followed.

“Exactly.”

A pause.

“Why are you suddenly always coming first?”

Zayne stopped.

The others laughed.

Even Rayden's mouth twitched.

“We're going to fail because of you,” Zayne muttered.

Kai smiled.

“Worth it.”

---

THE FIRST TRIAL — THE FOREST OF QUESTIONS

They eventually reached a clearing.

Five stone pillars stood in a circle.

Each had a question carved into it.

Behind them, thick vines crawled across the ground.

Aurora stepped forward.

“Don't touch anything.”

Kai looked at the vines.

“I wasn't planning to.”

One of the vines suddenly snapped upward.

Everyone jumped back.

Aurora examined the pillar.

“The rules.”

Words appeared.

FIVE QUESTIONS.

FIVE ANSWERS.

ONE WRONG ANSWER—AND THE FOREST WILL CLAIM YOU.

The vines moved.

Vikram stared.

“That's reassuring.”

Aurora crouched beside the first pillar.

“This is a logic puzzle.”

She read it carefully.

“If five creatures enter a cave, and each creature has three shadows…”

Kai looked at her.

“Why does every magical world have weird math?”

“Quiet.”

Aurora continued.

The puzzle was difficult.

Not impossible.

But designed to make them rush.

The first answer was solved.

The vines retreated.

Second.

Third.

The fourth took nearly twenty minutes.

The Wildborn team appeared on the other side of the clearing.

Their leader looked over.

“You're taking too long.”

Kai smiled.

“Don't worry about us.”

The boy smirked.

“That's exactly what I'm doing.”

He walked toward his team's puzzle.

Then, while pretending to examine the stone, his hand moved.

A small blade cut through one of the vines.

Zayne noticed.

“Hey.”

The Wildborn boy looked back innocently.

“What?”

“You cut the vines.”

“So?”

“That's cheating.”

The boy shrugged.

“The rules don't say I can't.”

Kai stepped forward.

“Actually, they kind of do.”

The Wildborn boy smiled.

“Then stop me.”

Kai's eyes narrowed.

Before he could respond, Aurora grabbed his arm.

“No.”

Kai looked at her.

“He cheated.”

“I know.”

“Then why aren't we doing anything?”

“Because we don't need to.”

Aurora looked back at the puzzle.

“We're going to finish properly.”

Kai stared at her.

Then smiled.

“Okay.”

He turned to the Wildborn team.

“Enjoy your head start.”

The boy laughed.

“We will.”

Aurora solved the fifth puzzle.

The vines withdrew.

The forest opened.

They had passed.

---

THE SECOND TRIAL — THE RIVER OF STONE

The forest ended at a massive river.

It wasn't normal water.

The entire river moved like it was alive.

And every few seconds, enormous cliffs rose from beneath the surface.

They crashed together.

Again.

And again.

The Wildborn team immediately began constructing something.

Kai stared.

“Boat?”

Lyra looked at the river.

“No.”

She touched her hair.

“Too easy.”

A massive cliff slammed into another.

The impact created a wave that nearly reached them.

Lyra smiled.

“Okay.”

Her hair lifted.

Strands began twisting together.

Hundreds of them.

Then thousands.

They formed a structure.

A boat.

But the river immediately attacked it.

The vessel was torn apart.

Lyra stumbled.

“Right.”

Vikram stared.

“So the river doesn't want boats.”

“No,” Lyra said.

“It wants us dead.”

“That's another way of saying it.”

The Seven watched the cliffs.

They weren't moving randomly.

Zayne noticed first.

“They're following a pattern.”

Lyra looked at him.

“How long?”

“Every eleven seconds.”

Rayden watched.

“Then we move between them.”

“Impossible,” Zayne said.

“Not if we control the air.”

Zayne raised his hands.

Wind exploded across the river.

Lyra's hair shot outward, attaching itself to the opposite cliffs.

She pulled.

Zayne controlled the wind.

Kai and Mei stood at the rear, destroying smaller rocks that came toward them.

Aurora kept the water from swallowing them.

Vikram watched the pattern.

“Left!”

They moved.

“Right!”

Another cliff crashed down behind them.

“DOWN!”

Everyone ducked.

The river roared.

Lyra's hair tightened.

“Almost!”

A cliff rose directly in front of them.

Kai stepped forward.

Fire exploded from his hands.

Mei's ice followed.

The combined attack cracked the stone.

Zayne pushed the pieces aside with a blast of wind.

They crossed.

The Wildborn team reached the other side first.

Kai stepped onto solid ground.

He looked at them.

“Congratulations.”

The Wildborn leader smiled.

“You lost.”

Kai shrugged.

“We crossed.”

“You're behind.”

“Yeah.”

Kai smiled.

“But we're not dead.”

---

THE THIRD TRIAL — THE ENDLESS MAZE

The maze was worse.

There were no signs.

No markings.

Every corridor looked identical.

After forty minutes, Kai stopped.

“Guys.”

Nobody answered.

“Guys.”

Vikram turned.

“What?”

“We've been here before.”

Zayne frowned.

“No.”

Vikram pointed at a crack in the wall.

“We passed that.”

They continued.

Ten minutes later—

the same crack.

Vikram stopped again.

“We're going in circles.”

Rayden looked around.

“Then we'll change direction.”

They did.

Twenty minutes.

Same place.

Again.

Vikram crouched.

He touched the floor.

“Wait.”

Aurora knelt beside him.

“What?”

“The dust.”

“What about it?”

“Our footprints.”

Vikram smiled.

“We're not actually walking in circles.”

Everyone stared.

“The maze is moving.”

He pointed toward the walls.

“Look at the stones.”

They shifted every few minutes.

The maze was rearranging itself.

Vikram closed his eyes.

His mental power expanded.

The corridors became a map inside his mind.

He could feel the structure.

Not see it.

Feel it.

“Left.”

They turned.

“Right.”

They turned again.

“Stop.”

Everyone stopped.

Vikram pointed toward a wall.

“That's not a wall.”

Kai frowned.

“How do you know?”

“Because it's thinking like one.”

Kai stared at him.

“That sentence made absolutely no sense.”

“Trust me.”

Vikram pushed his hand forward.

The wall disappeared.

Beyond it was the exit.

Kai stared.

Then looked at Vikram.

“Remind me never to play chess with you.”

Vikram smiled.

“Good decision.”

---

THE FOURTH TRIAL — THE ARENA

The fourth challenge was simple.

At least, it looked simple.

Seven opponents entered the arena.

Then twenty.

Then fifty.

They weren't human.

They were constructs made from magical energy.

Their abilities changed constantly.

Fire.

Ice.

Wind.

Shadow.

Water.

The Seven were surrounded.

Kai smiled.

“Finally.”

Zayne looked at him.

“You're enjoying this.”

“A little.”

The first wave attacked.

Kai's fire exploded.

Mei froze the ground.

Rayden disappeared into shadow.

Aurora sent water crashing through three opponents.

Lyra's hair wrapped around another.

Vikram shattered the mental connection controlling them.

Zayne's wind threw the rest backward.

For the first time, they weren't fighting separately.

They were moving together.

Kai attacked.

Zayne cleared his path.

Rayden appeared behind the enemy.

Mei froze its legs.

Aurora struck.

Lyra pulled it down.

Vikram disrupted it.

Seven attacks.

One movement.

The final construct fell.

Silence.

Kai looked around.

“Did we just become good?”

Rayden nodded.

“Apparently.”

Kai grinned.

“I knew I was talented.”

---

THE FIFTH TRIAL — THE FLOATING PATH

There was no ground.

Only hundreds of floating platforms suspended over an enormous abyss.

Some moved.

Some disappeared.

Some flipped upside down.

The goal was on the opposite side.

Zayne looked up.

“We need a pattern.”

Kai stared.

“I see one.”

“What?”

Kai pointed.

“Those platforms aren't random.”

Zayne looked again.

He was right.

They moved according to the wind.

Zayne understood immediately.

“I can control the current.”

Kai smiled.

“And I'll heat the platforms.”

Zayne frowned.

“Why?”

“Because when they rise, we jump.”

Zayne stared.

Then smiled.

“That might actually work.”

The two moved together.

Wind.

Fire.

Wind.

Fire.

The platforms rose and fell.

The others followed.

Lyra used her hair to pull Mei across.

Aurora caught Vikram when he slipped.

Rayden jumped across three platforms without touching the middle one.

They reached the end.

Kai looked at Zayne.

“See?”

Zayne nodded.

“Don't get used to being right.”

Kai laughed.

---

THE SIXTH TRIAL — THE CHAMBER OF ILLUSIONS

The door opened.

Darkness.

They stepped inside.

And immediately—

the Academy appeared.

Kai blinked.

“What?”

He was standing in his old home.

His family was there.

His room.

His old life.

Vikram suddenly disappeared.

Aurora was standing in a garden.

Mei was somewhere else.

Lyra saw her friends screaming.

Zayne saw himself alone.

Rayden saw a grave.

Each of them was trapped.

The chamber whispered.

Stay.

You can go home.

You don't need this.

Kai reached for his family.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

His mother was smiling.

But she didn't blink.

Kai stepped back.

“This isn't real.”

The illusion changed.

His home disappeared.

His friends appeared.

They were dead.

Kai froze.

“No.”

He ran toward them.

A voice whispered:

You couldn't save them.

Kai's eyes filled with tears.

Then he heard something.

A laugh.

Vikram's laugh.

Real.

He turned.

The illusion cracked.

Across the chamber, Rayden stood alone.

He looked at the others.

“Don't believe it.”

Aurora shook her head.

“We stay together.”

One by one, the illusions shattered.

The seven found each other.

The chamber tried again.

Food.

Families.

Money.

Power.

Freedom.

A way home.

Everything they had wanted.

Everything they had lost.

They walked past it.

Together.

The door opened.

The Wildborn team stood outside.

Their leader looked at them differently now.

Not amused.

Respectful.

“You passed.”

Kai smiled.

“Obviously.”

---

And then came the final door.

No monsters.

No puzzles.

No enemies.

Just seven separate doors.

Seraphina's voice echoed through the chamber.

“The final trial cannot be completed as a group.”

The Seven looked at each other.

“Each of you will face the thing you fear most.”

The doors opened.

Kai stared into his.

Vikram stopped breathing.

Aurora's face went pale.

Mei clenched her fists.

Lyra's smile disappeared.

Zayne looked suddenly very young.

Rayden said nothing.

The doors began closing behind them.

And for the first time since they had entered the Trials—

the Seven were separated.

None of them knew what waited on the other side.

But each of them knew one thing.

The final challenge wasn't testing their powers.

It was testing who they were when nobody was there to save them.
