Chapter Five — The Power Within

The Academy woke them before sunrise.

Not politely.

A bell rang through the entire residence wing at five in the morning, loud enough to make Vikram fall out of bed.

He landed on the floor with a thud.

“I'm going home.”

Kai, still half asleep, lifted his head from the pillow.

“You said that yesterday.”

“I was optimistic yesterday.”

Kai closed his eyes again.

“Go back to sleep.”

“I hate you.”

“Good morning to you too.”

Across the corridor, Lyra was already yelling at someone.

“WHY ARE YOU IN MY ROOM?”

Mei's voice came from inside.

“I WAS LOOKING FOR THE BATHROOM.”

“THERE IS A SIGN.”

“I CAN'T READ WHEN I'M PANICKED.”

“You're holding the sign.”

“Oh.”

Silence.

Then:

“Sorry.”

Aurora's laughter drifted through the corridor.

For the first time since arriving at Aureon, the seven didn't feel like strangers.

Not quite friends.

Not yet.

But something had begun.

A strange little familiarity.

A ridiculous one.

And then the doors opened.

A woman stood outside.

“Follow me.”

Vikram appeared in the doorway with his hair sticking up in six different directions.

“Do we at least get breakfast?”

“No.”

Vikram stared at her.

“I don't like this academy anymore.”

Kai walked past him.

“Come on.”

“Where?”

“No idea.”

“Great.”

They followed.

---

The Academy had a section they hadn't seen before.

It was buried beneath the main building.

The walls were made of dark stone, covered with symbols that seemed to move when they weren't looking directly at them.

Seven doors stood along the corridor.

Each one was different.

One looked as though it had been carved from smoke.

One was covered in frost.

One seemed to have flames moving beneath its surface.

Another was completely transparent.

The seventh looked almost alive.

Lyra stopped in front of it.

“Why does that one look like it's breathing?”

Nobody answered.

The woman turned toward them.

“Today, you will discover what you can do.”

Zayne folded his arms.

“We already know what we can do.”

“Do you?”

He hesitated.

She smiled.

“No.”

She opened the first door.

“Rayden.”

He looked at the others.

Then walked inside.

---

Rayden

The room was completely dark.

Rayden stood alone.

“Hello?”

No answer.

Then the shadows moved.

Not around him.

Toward him.

He stepped backward.

The darkness touched his hand.

And disappeared into his skin.

Rayden gasped.

Suddenly he could see.

Not with his eyes.

Through the shadows.

Every corner of the room became visible.

He lifted his hand.

The darkness gathered around his fingers.

It obeyed him.

He moved his hand.

A black ribbon stretched across the room.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The shadows formed around him like armour.

The teacher watching from outside whispered:

“Shadow manipulation.”

Rayden stared at his hands.

The darkness curled around his wrist like smoke.

He didn't smile.

He simply whispered,

“What am I?”

The teacher answered:

“One of the Seven.”

---

Zayne

Zayne entered next.

His room was completely white.

There was nothing inside.

No furniture.

No weapons.

No doors.

Then the air moved.

A small breeze passed his face.

Zayne frowned.

Another gust hit him.

He raised his hand instinctively.

The wind stopped.

He stared.

Then smiled.

“Oh.”

The room exploded.

Air spiralled around him.

Zayne's coat lifted.

His hair flew backward.

He laughed.

For the first time since arriving at the Academy, he looked genuinely impressed.

He moved his hand.

The wind followed.

Faster.

Stronger.

A violent spiral formed around him.

He looked through the observation glass.

“Did you see that?”

Nobody answered.

Zayne grinned.

“I knew I was special.”

Lyra, watching from outside, rolled her eyes.

“Of course he did.”

---

Kai

Kai walked into the next chamber.

It was hot.

Very hot.

He immediately started sweating.

“Who designed this place?”

A voice answered:

“You did.”

Kai froze.

“What?”

A tiny flame appeared above his palm.

He stared at it.

“No.”

The flame grew.

“Oh.”

It grew again.

“Oh, that's cool.”

The fire climbed his arm.

Kai laughed.

“Okay, this is REALLY cool.”

The chamber erupted.

Fire surrounded him.

Instead of burning him, it moved with him.

He lifted his hand.

The flames followed.

He pointed.

A wall of fire exploded across the room.

Kai stared.

Then looked through the glass.

“Did anyone get that on camera?”

Vikram yelled:

“DO IT AGAIN!”

Kai grinned.

“Gladly.”

---

Vikram

Vikram entered the fourth chamber.

It looked disappointingly normal.

A chair.

A table.

A mirror.

“That's it?”

The door closed.

Vikram sat down.

Nothing happened.

He waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Twenty.

“Hello?”

Nothing.

He stood.

Then the room disappeared.

He was suddenly standing in a street.

His childhood street.

His old house.

His mother stood in front of him.

Vikram froze.

“Mum?”

She smiled.

He stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Something was wrong.

His mother had been dead for years.

The image smiled again.

Vikram's expression changed.

“You're not real.”

The illusion smiled wider.

And suddenly hundreds of voices filled the room.

Fear.

Anger.

Pain.

Memories.

Thoughts.

All of them rushing into his head at once.

Vikram dropped to his knees.

He screamed.

Then—

Everything stopped.

He opened his eyes.

The entire room had gone silent.

He looked at the mirror.

His reflection looked back.

But it wasn't copying him.

It was smiling.

Vikram stared.

Then the reflection spoke.

“You don't control minds.”

Vikram swallowed.

“What?”

“You enter them.”

The mirror cracked.

Vikram stood.

His eyes changed.

For one terrifying second, every person watching from the observation room felt something brush against their minds.

The Headmaster stepped backward.

“He's already doing it.”

The teacher beside her whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Seraphina looked at Vikram.

“No.”

She watched him carefully.

“It's worse than that.”

Vikram walked out of the chamber.

He looked pale.

Kai immediately approached him.

“Are you okay?”

Vikram smiled.

“Yeah.”

Then quietly:

“I think I can hear everyone's thoughts.”

Kai stared.

“That's horrible.”

“I know.”

A beat.

Vikram looked at him.

“Your thoughts are mostly food.”

Kai looked offended.

“That's private.”

Vikram laughed.

For the first time, his fear loosened.

---

Aurora

Her chamber was filled with water.

Not a pool.

An ocean.

Aurora stepped forward.

The water rose around her.

She didn't move.

It moved for her.

A wave curled over her head.

She lifted her hand.

The wave stopped.

She lowered her hand.

The water fell gently.

Then she touched the surface.

The entire room transformed.

Water became ribbons.

Rings.

Spears.

Shields.

Then flowers.

Aurora smiled.

“Beautiful.”

The teacher watching her whispered:

“Water manipulation.”

Seraphina corrected him.

“Hydrokinesis.”

Aurora didn't hear.

She was too busy watching the water dance around her.

---

Mei

Mei walked into a freezing chamber.

She shivered.

“Why is it so cold?”

The door closed.

Ice immediately spread across the floor.

Mei stared.

“Oh.”

She lifted her hand.

A snowflake formed above her palm.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The entire chamber froze.

Mei's eyes widened.

She laughed.

“Okay.”

She moved her fingers.

Ice rose from the ground.

A staircase.

A wall.

A blade.

A small crystal bird.

She stared at it.

Then smiled.

“This is adorable.”

The teacher outside didn't smile.

“Her control is unusually precise.”

Seraphina watched carefully.

“She hasn't even begun.”

---

Lyra

Lyra entered the final chamber.

Nothing happened.

She waited.

Nothing.

She crossed her arms.

“Seriously?”

The lights flickered.

Her hair moved.

Lyra frowned.

A strand lifted.

Then another.

Then another.

Her hair began growing.

Longer.

Longer.

Longer.

Until it touched the floor.

Lyra stared at it.

“Okay.”

The strands twisted together.

Something began forming.

A creature.

Small horns.

Sharp teeth.

Glowing eyes.

It crawled from her hair and sat on her shoulder.

Lyra stared at it.

The creature stared back.

“...What are you?”

It growled.

Lyra smiled slowly.

“Oh, you're cute.”

The creature bit her finger.

“OW!”

It jumped away.

Lyra glared.

“You're grounded.”

Outside the chamber, Mei burst out laughing.

Lyra pointed at her.

“Don't.”

Mei laughed harder.

---

Seven doors opened.

Seven young people stepped into the corridor.

They looked at one another differently now.

Not as strangers.

As something else.

Something dangerous.

Something powerful.

Something the Academy had been waiting for.

Seraphina stood before them.

“You have discovered the beginning of your abilities.”

Vikram raised his hand.

“Beginning?”

“Yes.”

He lowered his hand slowly.

“I don't like that word.”

“You shouldn't.”

Seraphina looked at all seven.

“Because none of you understand what you are capable of yet.”

Behind her, the great doors of the chamber opened.

Beyond them stood hundreds of students.

Watching.

Whispering.

Waiting.

Seraphina stepped aside.

“Welcome to your first day as the Seven.”

The students parted.

And for the first time, the seven walked into the Academy together.

Not knowing that somewhere far beyond the school walls—

Veyr had found the first Key.

And it had whispered his name.
