Chapter 5

"Your offers sound remarkably tempting, Miss... especially since the alternative was waiting to die a slow, miserable death in this dark cage," Julian said as he slipped back into his torn white lab coat with deliberate, unhurried movements, his clever eyes gleaming with sharp intelligence and an unhidden streak of curiosity. "Though, you must allow me to wonder: a girl with your level of lethal competence doesn't just wres- tle her way into a high-security clandestine military complex all by herself purely out of a sudden charitable urge to play rescuer."

"We aren't here to cozy up and trade life stories, Doctor," I replied in a calm, steady voice, moving toward the basement exit with measured, confident strides while my gaze swept across the damp stone corridors. "I have a pack of absolute fools outside who need to be carefully managed to serve my own ends, and you happen to need a reliable vehicle to smuggle your hide out of this infested sector alive. Consider it a mutually beneficial transaction, and don't waste energy fretting over my underlying motives."

Before he could fire back with another witty remark, my mental radar flashed an urgent, stabbing warning.

Out in the complex's outer courtyard, it appeared Kyllian and his men had stumbled headfirst into a genuine crisis. Spits of erratic, fragmented gunfire echoed through the heavy walls, followed immediately by angry shouts and Tiffany’s frantic, ear-piercing shrieks of terror. According to the original timeline of the novel, this was the exact, calculated window where the group was scripted to walk straight into an ambush laid by the "Road Wolves"—a savage gang of cutthroats and deserters roaming the badlands who utilized captured zombies as living shields to harvest precious energy crystals straight from their skulls and upgrade their primitive weapons.

I gestured sharply for Julian to stay behind me, slipping with extreme caution down the dim corridor until I peered out over the exterior courtyard through a rusted, shattered iron-framed window.

The scene unfolding outside was absolute, unadulterated chaos. Our armored truck was completely cornered against the stone warehouse walls, surrounded by six members of the Road Wolves wearing patched leather vests stamped with bloody insignia, brandishing rusted, vintage assault rifles. They had Kyllian and his men pinned, forcing them to drop their weapons to the dirt and raise their hands in helpless surrender. Meanwhile, Tiffany was cowering in a patch of dust, weeping hysterically in a full-blown melodramatic meltdown, boxed in by two gang thugs who were openly mocking her over-the-top panic with crude, howling laughter.

The gang leader, a massive brute of a man with a hideous, jagged scar stretching from his right ear all the way down to his jawline, brandished a heavy, blood-stained axe as he barked a harsh, guttural laugh. "Well, look at what the wasteland dragged in today! An armored 4x4 loaded down with a full month's worth of rations, plus a pretty little blonde plaything to keep our cold nights warm in this dump!"

Kyllian gritted his teeth so hard a muscle twitched in his jaw, burning with silent, impotent rage, entirely helpless under the cold black stares of the rifles leveled at his men's skulls.

I watched the entire spectacle unfold with absolute, chilling detachment. I had zero interest in stepping into the cheesy shoes of some self-sacrificing white-knight hero, but wiping out this gang at this exact juncture served two master-stroke strategic objectives: keeping Kyllian and Tiffany on a tight leash to act as a convenient buffer for my movements a little longer, and—most importantly—reaping an absolute windfall of raw energy crystals to fuel the exponential growth of the Ability Tree inside my hidden dimension.

I glanced back at Julian, who was observing the standoff in utter silence from the shadows behind me, and offered a faint, cryptic smile. "How's your aim, Doctor?"

Julian pushed his cracked optical frames up the bridge of his nose with a single finger, returning my cold smirk with one of his own. "I didn't hold the chair of military biological research for years for nothing, Miss. I can group my shots with surgical precision—provided you aren't expecting me to charge out there and wrestle anyone in the dirt."

"Splendid. Watch the eastern flank, and leave the rest to me."

I snatched a heavy, solid steel pipe from behind a stack of shattered storage crates, sliding out the side utility door of the building with absolute stealth. I melted into the deep blind spot directly behind the gang leader, while Julian took up a high-ground rear-guard position to provide covering fire if things went sideways.

Before a single soul among the thugs had the faintest clue that the board had flipped, I moved with blinding, fluid speed.

BANG!

A sharp, perfectly placed crack rang out from Julian’s hidden pistol, catching one of the perimeter guards squarely in the right shoulder, instantly shattering his focus and sending a jolt of panic through their ranks. In that exact microsecond, I unleashed a devastating, bone-crushing swing with the steel pipe, driving all my momentum straight into the base of the gang leader’s skull.

The hulking brute crumpled instantly to the dirt without even managing a dying gasp, collapsing into a heap of his own foul blood.

The remaining gang members whipped around in frantic horror, but my mental radar gave them zero breathing room to organize a counter-attack or lift their weapons. I tore through the open space with absolute athletic grace, dodging and weaving between their panicked lunges. Every single strike I landed was executed with ruthless, terminal precision, while Julian’s measured, cold suppression shots picked off anyone attempting to bolt or angle a shot toward my blind spots.

Within the span of a few short minutes, the courtyard fell into an eerie, suffocating silence. Six lifeless corpses littered the concrete, and a surge of hot, raw energy pulsed from their fading bodies, rushing directly inward to flood the hidden dimension. Deep inside my soul, the roots of the Ability Tree shuddered violently, bursting forth with brilliant, magnificent new buds glowing in vibrant shades of electric blue.

Not a whisper of wind dared disturb the heavy air.

Kyllian and his men stood frozen like statues carved of stone, their eyes blown wide to the point of tearing as they stared at me standing calmly over the corpses of the region’s most feared marauders, my breathing completely even and unbothered. Across the yard, Tiffany clapped both trembling hands over her mouth, stumbling backward in sheer, paralyzing horror as she finally comprehended a terrifying truth: the girl standing before her was no longer the helpless, spineless doll she thought she knew... she had mutated into an unstoppable apex predator.

I stepped toward them with slow, measured paces, gesturing casually toward Julian as he strolled out from the shadow of the building, dusting off his coat with a dry, sardonic grin.

"Seems we arrived right on schedule to help you boys organize your travel itinerary a bit better, wouldn't you say?"
